The Absolute Coolest Movie Of Jupiter In Existence

Neil deGrasse Tyson - "Children do not read horoscopes!"

bluecliff says...

V.B. Nimble, V.B. Quick

V.B. Wigglesworth wakes at noon,
Washes, shaves and very soon
Is at the lab; he reads his mail,
Swings a tadpole by the tail,
Undoes his coat, removes his hat,

Dips a spider in a vat
Of alkaline, phones the press,
Tells them he is F.R.S.,
Subdivides six protocells,
Kills a rat by ringing bells,

Writes a treatise, edits two
Symposia on "Will man do?,"
Gives a lecture, audits three,
Has the sperm club in for tea,
Pensions off an ageing spore,

Cracks a test tube, takes some pure
Science and applies it, finds,
His hat, adjusts it, pulls the blinds,
Instructs the jellyfish to spawn,
And, by one o'clock, is gone.

^ Yeah, when trends get like that it makes the place boring, but I will gladly have a QI trend over trends like that Spore videogame trend. That was terrible.

Parasitic Wasps invade a Caterpillar's body

grinter says...

Toxoplasmosis will make mice less cautious around cats, or even attracted to cat urine. There are also good examples of parasites affecting the behaviour of fishes, making them more susceptible to predation by birds, and of fungus affecting the behaviour of ants, causing them to climb up trees, where they can better disperse fungal spores.

^Bruti79 "Also, isn't there something that happens to mice when they have a parasite, that makes them more aggressive towards cats?"

Favorite Games of 2008 (Videogames Talk Post)

1. Dead Space - This game didn't get it's due. Excellent production and easily the scariest game I've ever played. This is a game to be played at night with the lights off.

2. Fallout 3 - See my screenname. Beautiful environments, plenty to explore and Bethesda actually figured out how to make combat fun.

3. GTA4 - All around great game. Not sure why so many bashed it. Sure, your cousin calls too much, but the game only requires you to take a couple of the man-date missions.

4. Braid - A mini masterpiece with a bunch of fresh and sophisticated ideas. We need more games like this.

5. Little Big Planet - The game that keeps on giving. The level editor is massive, powerfull and intimidating. If I ever finish a level, I'll post the details here.

Honorable Mention:
No More Heroes - Avant garde games are rare. This is a good one.
Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village - Cool story/animation and fun logic puzzles.
Gears of War 2 - Great game with much variety. They pulled out all the stops.
Left 4 Dead - Great multiplayer fun, but a bit skimpy on levels.

Not to mention the high profile games that I haven't played yet (Mirror's Edge, World of Goo, Far Cry 2, BanjoKazooee, Prince of Persia, MGS4, Spore).

It's 10:35 PM on Christmas Eve - and I'm spent (Blog Entry by dag)

I'm 8 hours away, but it's straight up - so almost the same time zone. It's 10 AM now - Santa came. I got a corn popper. Mainly I think because I make a huge mess in the kitchen by doing it the pan way.

ABBA featured heavily in kids' stockings- and I broke down and got Spore for everyone. I know it's been panned by critics - but it makes a pretty good kids' game. It was either that or Left 4 Dead - my partner thought it would be "inappropriate" for an 8 year old. jeesh.

Since when has Valve/Steam ever treated anyone like a criminal.

Yeah, I think that's hyperbole on xxovercastxx's part -- they do force you to go online, once, to register a game when you've first bought it (assuming you bought the boxed version), but that's pretty much par for the course at this point. Steam certainly seems like the lesser of evils these days, especially with the limited install policies of games like Spore or Mass Effect.

Spore: Scary Skeleton Creature

Impressive, but I've noticed in this and other bipedals that tend to look humanish that Spore just can't make a human-looking walk. They are always a bit funny-walkin.

Progress bars - why we need them in everyday life

9980 says...

Progress bars are good, spinning icons are bad, the worst is progress bars that lie about progress. While installing a patch for Spore a couple of days ago, I was stuck looking at a 0% progress bar for a whole 6 minutes, then watching it go straight to 100% instantaneously, only to then watch it return to zero for the next 4 minutes. All of this, and there was *another* progress bar in the back telling me that the operation was 100% done, even from the start. I'd take spinning over that any day.
