As the poster above said, I think you are over-simplifying it and assuming a lot. The "bomb" they are bringing to the sun isn't just an atomic bomb, it is billed as something much more powerful and not necessarily explosive, but pushing the borders of the physical universe. The captain of the first ship goes nuts not because of a previously known instability, but because of a strange sickness which seems to affect people exposed to too much of the sun's radiation as they get closer. The psychiatrist they bring on the second mission starts to show signs of the same instability, though he seems to cope with it better because of his professional training.

Is the premise pure science fiction? Yes. Was it a great movie in the spirit of 2001, Alien (the first one), and Solaris? Absolutely. If people went expecting Star Wars, or Star Trek, or something else shiny, happy, and easy to digest, they were definitely going to be disappointed.

Leveling criticism against a movie which you clearly haven't seen really isn't fair nor useful.

The only difference between you and a NASA scientist is 160 credit hours of aerospace engineering.

Reminds me of the ending of Steven Soderbergh's "Solaris" where the space station is getting pulled into the expanding planet while making all kinds of worrying noises.

Wow, he couldn't be more wrong. Yahtzee must not be a horror guy, because this game is dripping with horror street cred. The art design absolutely gorgeous, the pacing is maddeningly deliberate, the action is brutal, dark and extremely violent.

The story is simple (A mixture of Aliens, Resident Evil 4, Solaris and Event Horizon), but it packs some great twists and has an extremely satisfying end. The main characters relationship with his 'supposedly' dead wife who keeps manifesting (is she real or in his head; I'll never tell) was not meant to be a weeping Lifetime movie of the week, but rather more of a creepy mystery, and the truth is spelled out at the end (spoiler: very end).

It's one of those games that needs to be played at night with all the lights off. Fuck off Yahtzee. Go wank it to Saints Row 2.

Thanks for the great list Eklek, and yes unfortunately I have watched almost the whole list. I was surprised to see Russian flicks like Kin Dza Dza and Ivan Vasevilich Meanyt Prafesiou, thought they are comedy sci-fi films more then hard sci-fi. Great films, though without knowing Russian one wouldn't really enjoy them, at least not in the same way as Solaris and Stalker. Yeah Stalker wasn't on that list though was it?

I'll put the Russian ones on my list, hopefully I get the jokes..maybe there's a site full of spoilers explaining the dialogue's funniness..
Stalker is on this imdb list as well, a must see..
