Ed Schultz Why I was Fired

Mordhaus says...

It's hard for me to take him serious after he spent years complaining about Putin and then deigned to take a paycheck from RT to get back into broadcasting. He's been uber soft on his new boss since.

Meanwhile, in Russia

newtboy says...

Disappointed...I was looking for a goldilocks moment.
This Russian is too tough, and this Russian is too mushy soft, but this Russian is the perfect tender consistency....nom nom nom.
Sure seems like a *terrible idea to me. What happens when they get 3' of snow tonight and wake up to a bear in the kitchen?

Dramatic crash during rally in Lithuania

Khufu says...

to be fair, if it was the Dukes, they would have just cut to a different car landing softly;)

They are likely the reason there are no chargers left, those inconsiderate bastards.

Payback said:

I see the Dukes aren't doing any better now that you can't buy a '69 Charger anywhere on the planet...

Royal guard punches annoying guy.

bremnet says...

Come on... when's the last time you were in a brawl? Have seen lots of guys go down with less than that, caused a few of 'em too. A guy back home (Mike Lubbock) was about 6' 1" tall, big broad shoulders and barrel chest, would sooner fight than eat and used to win most of the time. Unless you caught him just below the right cheek bone, and he'd drop like a soft rag. Usually woke up after a minute or two. The Metheral brothers were about the same, and so was Keith Verstagen. Doesn't take a serious medical condition, just one of those things.

Drachen_Jager said:

And there's no way that punch would have kayoed anyone without a serious medical condition.

And, and, and....

Yes, it surprises me anyone thinks this is real.

Your phone is always listening

MilkmanDan says...

Slashdot had a post about an upcoming (about 1 year out) phone that can run pretty standard Linux distros. I took interest because I'm very annoyed about how UNconfigurable android is.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, very old by now, but hardware wise it still works fine. Software wise, it is shit. Android apps are massively bloated compared to when the phone was new, so the "system" partition of the phone is too small to install anything other than like 1-2 apps. From what I can tell, rooting might not help because there are still standard partitioning requirements? I dunno. Anyway, it is a big mess compared to a desktop, where I can partition things any way I want (which works great if you know what you are doing).

Anyway, I don't want to shill for Purism, the company that will be making the phone in the Slashdot article (for one thing, the phone is still a year or so away from final production), but they seem to be doing things right. They DO have some laptops on the market now, which apparently include a relevant feature mentioned in the write-up about their upcoming phone: hardware kill switches for the microphone, camera, and WiFi/Bluetooth.

If you read the ToS (hah! as if) for things like Facebook's app or the phones / OS themselves, you might see that you are "agreeing" to this kind of data collectionspying. If that sets the bar for "good" behavior, imagine what the bad guys (NSA, other agencies, state actors, unscrupulous advertisers, malware producers, etc.) can and will do. That's why any software solution is dubious. That's why electrical tape over your webcam is better than assuming that the record light is trustworthy. That's why a hardware kill switch is a good feature if you're concerned about this (like me).

Here's links to:
an article about the hardware kill switches in Purism's laptops, and
an article about their upcoming phone the Librem 5

I don't own any of their hardware. I don't like paid shills. That being said, I'm interested in what they are doing.

Why Photos of the Eiffel Tower at Night are Illegal

StukaFox says...

Oddly enough, my phone's wallpaper is a photo I took of the Eiffel Tower lit up at night.

What're they gonna do, arrest me? HA! Hold on, someone playing the accordion and smelling of soft, ripe cheese is at the door . . .

Pacific Rim Uprising - Official Trailer

Mordhaus says...

For me, I would have only considered it a true sequel if it was taking place somewhat soon after the original and had the same actors (well, the ones that lived).

It's not a full reboot, but kind of soft one. X number of years in the future, the son of one of the old characters, etc etc. It's kind of a reboot lite.

ChaosEngine said:

What makes you say it's a reboot? Looks like it's a sequel to me (main character is even Idris Elba's characters son).

That said, I see where you're coming from. I loved Pacific Rim; I didn't even know they were making a sequel and then I saw this and I was stoked... until I watched it.

And meh... doesn't do it for me. Shame they could get Del Toro back, and the less said about the shitty soundtrack for the trailer the better.

Still gonna watch it though, which is more than I can say about Justice League.

Now I have to go watch the Thor Ragnarok trailer again to cheer myself up.

The Federalist Society: Trump’s Shit Judge Pipeline

iaui says...

Wow, that's some ignorant soft-minded drivel, Bob. Your Russian, America-hating slant is showing through. Yes, in the past it was the Republicans who freed the slaves. Now the parties have switched places and it's the Republicans trying to take Black people's votes away. Who'd'a thunk the facts could be so hard for you to grasp? I'll admit, I'm certainly not surprised.

Anybody you don't like is a great person in my book, though. Sam Bee is certainly deserving of much respect.

As far as the Federalist Society, you really like them so they must be terrible, horrible people. Way to prove Sam correct.

Lawn Bubble

Stormsinger says...

I had to think back a bit...it's been a few decades since I spent any time on a lawn of zoysia. But once I thought a bit more carefully, it does seem that zoysia changes it's texture with the season. Over the winter (and dry times) it gets tough and spiky, like walking on a bed of nails. But during the (limited) times when it's fresh and green, it is pretty soft. I think you can tell which season sticks in my memory.

00Scud00 said:

On the bubble or on the zoysia? Based on my limited reading zoysia is really soft.

What in the world is that kind of turf? The only grass I'm familiar with that -might- form a dense enough root mass to do that would be zoysia. And you wouldn't want to be walking around on that in bare feet.

Religious Icons Having Lamb For Dinner

MilkmanDan says...

Whoa, I totally missed that line because I was already chuckling at "can't make an appearance?"

That's hilarious (from my perspective anyway), but sure is an outlier in terms of the tone on the whole video -- the rest of the jabs were pretty soft but that's a full-on Glasgow Kiss.

Low-Fat Foods Are Making You Fatter - Adam Ruins Everything

ChaosEngine says...

Yep.

Sugar is basically rocket fuel for your body, it's insanely useful for burning large amounts of energy quickly, and since we evolved in a low sugar environment, your body is trained to want it.

But these days we live in a sugar saturated environment where most people don't do anywhere near as much physical work, so the sugar is never burnt off. It's not meant to be a staple food.

Also, your liver basically treats sugar the same as alcohol. Not only does it make you fat, but it also suppresses your bodies natural "I'm full" reaction. Worst of all are high fructose corn syrup soft drinks.

Basically, if you wouldn't give your kid a beer... don't give them coke either. Coke = beer without the drunkenness.

New Rule: The Lesser of Two Evils

enoch says...

i have to agree that when the election was nearing the end,and it was time to vote.the choice was pretty clear.

i never liked the "lesser of two evils" argument, but when faced with a choice of:

soft fascist, narcissistic used car salesman, who spoke in bombastic and racially charged rhetoric, but really said nothing.

or...

a war-mongering corporatist, who never saw a war she didn't want to send your kids to go die in,or a corporation she didn't want to extract donations from for political favors and who basically said nothing as well.except for 'well,at least i am not that THAT guy"--->points to trump.

i am still gonna say...go with the corporatist.

because in the end,at least on domestic policy, hillary would have been adequate.oh she would have signed the TPP,and fucked millions of american workers, and she would have most likely expanded the drone campaign, and continued with the american empires policy of "regime change",but she had/has the knowledge and capabilities to actual lead a government.

hillary knows how to politic, and understands how shit gets done in washinton, and things would have remained relatively unchanged here in america.maybe..maybe.... some incremental change due to the political pressure the sanders campaign brought.

so i get it,and maher is not exactly wrong per se",but i think he is missing the bigger picture that so many in the beltway have missed, and CONTINUE to miss, because they reside in their own, tiny and insulated bubble.

the american people were desperate for change, and they have been for decades.after obama's campaign of 2008,and his "hope and change" platform, which ignited the american people, only to see,not "hope and change" but rather "more of the same".

and what was hillary offering?
a new message or vision? a new path for america that would include everybody to blaze a new path of invention, creativity and imagination to create an america everyone could be proud of? and feel a part of?

nope..she was offering "more of the same".

well, americans had already had their fill of "more of the same".they had lost faith in a system that appeared to no longer represent them.so they chose the nuclear option for change.terrifying and horrifying change.

so go ahead and blame the "bernie bros".feel free to slap responsibility on those "uneducated and redneck hillbillies".cry and whine and point the finger at those liberals who refused to abandon their principles, and by all means bask in the glory of your own self-righteous moralizing, and condescendingly condemn anyone who voted for trump,or who refused to vote at all.

you can sit in a small room with everybody else who voted for hillary, and self-righteously smell each others farts and call it a rose, because you are obviously a better quality human being than the rest of us.

and by all means, refuse to examine the fact that hillary ran a shit campaign, and had no real message, vision or path to the future.ignore the corruption and blatant, and politically motivated shenanigans of the DNC.god forbid you experienced a moment of honesty.

is trump going to be a disaster of presidency?
well,it sure is shaping up to look that way isn't it?
but we have survived horrible presidents before, and we shall survive trump.

and on a positive note:
trump has brought many people out of their apathetic slumber, and they are scrutinizing everything he does with a fine toothed comb.the amount people who are becoming politically engaged is quite impressive.

there is nothing in our representative democracy quite as powerful as people gathering together to put pressure on our elected representatives.

town hall meetings, that used to be wastelands, are now being packed to over-flowing.with citizens calling out their representatives..to their FACE..on how unhappy they are.

so go ahead and ridicule those who voted for trump, but it is due to trump that so many have gotten off their couches and are taking it to their congressmen and senators.

just a non-controversial,and easily predicted side effect, when you put someone like trump in power.

man,the politics in my country is getting really fucking interesting!i cannot WAIT to see what happens in the next episode!

what do you guys think?
/end rant
