Kids React to Controversial Cheerios Commercial

jubuttib says...

For sake of clarity I'm using prejudice in the sense of "any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable".

The reason I'm for some amount of prejudice against religion is that some religions/religious views are quite favorable, whereas some others are just bloody dangerous, inherently immoral and wrong, and several are like this by design (death cults for example). And some religions/religious views are just... Silly. While others can be both, like how scientology is silly, but if even part of the controversies regarding them are true then they're also bloody dangerous.

I'm not going to interact the same way with a self-professed death cultist, scientologist, raelian, or a fundamental/extremist of any religion or lack thereof as I do with so called "normal" people. By going that way they've already made some things painfully obvious, by signing up for some specific religious view they've already declared some things they believe in. If I know that some of the tenets of their professed view are just wrong, dangerous or possibly ridiculous, I will interact differently with them. I am also likely to be positively prejudiced towards for example christians from more liberal sects (like those who support gay marriage and women's rights), as opposed to, say, the Westboro Baptists.

Religious views are not something you're born with, they're the result of your own reasoning or some outside influence, but it's always something that can be affected. That puts them on another level entirely when compared to something like race. Whether some amount of prejudice can be helpful in certain situations (dark alley, strange person pointing a weapon at me, I'll initially judge that particular book by it's covers, even if the contents may possibly have some redeeming features), that's debatable, but race and religion aren't nearly on the same platform.

With regards to that first paragraph. No.

Prejudice - an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge

Although humans categorize and use shortcuts to make sense of the world, the use of prejudice in any real or meaningful way is always to the detriment of those involved.

Instead of condoning prejudice in any form, how about condoning the application of knowledge, compassion, and intelligence for any given situation/event based on the reality of the immediate situation instead of relying on things like prejudice and stereotype to take the easy way out?

In other words...as we've all been told do not judge a book by it's cover (or title page/table of contents to extend the analogy) but instead by the full contents within.

inside monsanto-scientists talk about the truth

enoch says...

@bcglorf
thanks man.
that was a most excellent reply.

then we are in a fundamental disagreement on the practices of monsanto.
i was under the understanding that percy had been targeted by monsanto because of cross pollination coming from his neighbors farm.which then found its way into his crop.

monsanto claimed the genetic markers gave them property rights and that percy was liable.

maybe i misunderstood.

and most documentaries are trying to make a point and by its very nature will be biased.so i agree with your point there but i cannot agree that monsanto is somehow some benevolent multi-national corporation who has not enacted and used with extreme prejudice an army of lawyers to silence and intimidate those who would speak out against them.

they make scientology look like a bunch of bed wetters.

i guess my main problem, politics and corruption aside,is that we are talking about a basic necessity:food.

you cannot patent life.
if you change the fundamental nature of that life there should be open and transparent study and discussion.
in both of these cases the public is left in the dark and any questions or dissent is met with legal papers.

i mean.who besides a corporation would develop a "suicide gene"?

i am not saying this is a simple issue but the situation does deserve some serious scrutiny.

anyways.thanks for the great response my friend.

2/3 rds of all food sold in america is GMO.
that would qualify as "almost all".
http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/ideas/2012/06/food-modified-food/
which is friendly to the GMO debate.
http://www.disabled-world.com/fitness/gm-foods.php
not so friendly to the debate.

while i will agree this is not a one dimensional discussion i cannot agree with your statement that this video would be considered uneducated slactivism.

corporations are amoral,not immoral,by design.
monsanto has purchased legislators and judges to enact laws which solely benefit them at the cost of society.veiled in secrecy and an army of lawyers that would make scientology blush.

you should really check the documentary channel out.there is a wealth of information concerning this behemoth corporation and how it does far more harm to our future food supply than good.

shveddy said:

"This means that almost all of the food you see in a typical grocery store is pure poison, genetically modified."

More important than simply being factually untrue, this statement shows that whoever put this information together doesn't take any time to understand the complexities of the issue.

Don't get me wrong - I'm definitely a local farmer's market kinda guy - but this kind of uneducated slactivism really pisses me off and does more harm than good because the people that actually make a difference can somewhat justifiably write them off.

Senate Subcommittee Propaganda Campaign 101

dystopianfuturetoday says...

I know you believe you are a brave awakened cassandra, privy to secret truths that others are not capable of understanding, but from outside this bubble, the image is less flattering.

I'm up to date on most of the major conspiracy theories, so it's not that I don't understand them or that I'm brainwashed by TV (I don't have TV service), it's just that I flat out reject them as unprovable foolishness.

I find conspiracy culture to be extremely lame, in the same way that I find Scientology and Magic Mormon Underpants to be lame, and have no problems saying so. When you accuse others of being unaware, gullible, mentally handicapped, unintelligent or lacking in reason, you do so from a very vulnerable position, because these are the same terms people use to describe conspiracy theorists.

In short, throwing stones from within a cathedral of glass is not without risk.

Remember... you wanted this.

Ugggh, watching this now and the opening 5 minutes include gratuitous douchebag sniper and "a Tom Cruise Production" in the openeing titles...Looks like a total piece of egomaniacal shit on par with Expendables.

Gonna down vote the trailer and hope the movie gets better, but not much hope from the direction Scientology-boy lately-He's got 3 other films in post-prod and only one looks good in spite of his hack-actiing because of special effects and story. More and more, Cruise= douche!

OPT OUT!!

That poor cop. Caught between a young kid that won't give him a word in edgewise and a old fuck that uses Scientology tactics of intimidation. Kudos to Officer Stan for responsibly handling the situation, although I would have liked him to have pressed the PR guy on showing him documentation that they needed a one million dollar insurance bond in order to film. At least the kids had done their homework and had documentation stating that they could indeed film at a TSA checkpoint.

So soon USA will become a cult nation? Can't wait.

Trips me out that it took someone besides the submitter and 2 days to add this to the cult channel. Mormonism is about as glaring an example of a cult as any of them. Others you may have heard of....
Scientology
Jehovah's Witnesses
Church Universal and Triumphant
Moonies
Raëlism
Christian Scientists
Unification Church...and a shitpot full of others including some fringe militant polygamists with their heads up to their red necks up each other's asses.
It's a brave new world, William Gibson fans get ready because he pretty much nailed with every novel possible scenarios for soon-to-be Planet E, and whack religions factor way in.
Personally, I'd love to have al...er, some of you, members of my church someday

Anonymous Outs Amanda Todd's Bully - Siftable? *discuss (News Talk Post)

Boise_Lib says...

First: I want to applaud @messenger for his sensitivity to the sift by posting this discussion before posting the controversial video.

Second: I've loved Anonymous since they first came to my attention by their opposition to Scientology.

Third: This is not the way for them to confront this issue. It seems obvious to me that they should have first taken the evidence to the authorities in canada. IF the authorities had not pursued prosecution in a timely manner--Then take the evidence to the public web.

Fourth: This video would not be a good addition to the sift. Videos about this (e.g. TYT's--or other news sites--take on the subject) would be a better choice. A report about the Anonymous video brings the subject up for discussion without being a direct threat of vigilantism.

Mitt's Magical Mormon Undies: Penn Jillette's Rant Redux

I disagree with Penn, when he says Mormonism isn't crazier, just more modern.
It absolutely IS crazier. The founder of Mormonism is someone who we know (because there are official, historical records, from a time when these records were already pretty believable) was a convicted con man. And he stuck his head in a hat to decode ancient tablets which, by the way, he was the only one to have seen.
Mormonism is one of the stupidest religions around. Period.
Just like Scientology

At least Mormonism is still a Christian religion. Sure, they are more like Christians: the director's cut with additional footage never before seen and the core tenants of the religion are based on a delusional con-man's fantasies, but they are still, at the core, a Christian religion.

I do have to give Mormons credit for their family support, charities, and their ability to take care of their members in need. They have a fantastic family support group. When the shit hits the fan and the world ends, Mormons will be the last few people standing.

I am an atheist as they get, but as an organization, Mormons do some pretty great things for the community. Scientology, on the other hand, is a scary cult that needs to be destroyed.
