180° Fisheye Fun!

I actually started out watching this vid where they use two of these lenses, and two Red Dragons to shoot 3D footage at more than the resolution required for an 8k master. I was entertained

German media reports that the USAF's budget plan for Q3/15 includes funds for the integration of the B61-12 nuclear bomb into German Tornado fighter-bombers.

How Germany can lobby for an abolition of nuclear weapons while our government allows the US to modernise its nuclear arsenal on German soil is beyond me, to be quite honest. Especially since an overwhelming majority of our parliament voted in favour of a resolution to pressure the US to remove its nukes from Germany territory five years ago.

Def not right. Browser? Resolution? Screenshot?

newtboy said:

OK....on the new front page now the top 15 are listed on the right hand side....AND NOTHING ELSE. I have to scroll to the bottom of the top 15 before the rest of the page starts. I'm certain that's not the intent, so something is wrong.

MOO!

Cyriak has just uploaded a new high res widescreen version of this

Here's the epic saga of cows vs aliens, in higher resolution and widescreen.

When I first uploaded it in 2007, youtube had a maximum video quality of 240p, and the compression looked like someone had chewed up the video and spat it out. That has always bothered me with this video, so here it is again with more pixels. I also went to the trouble of extending it to 16:9 and fixed a few bits, which was a lot more work than I anticipated.

Enjoy

One of my telescopes is 1800mm f/9 native focal length with an 8" front lens, talk about resolution and light gathering. It would be an honor to try it from a central park apartment in New York

TNS- Papa Pope addresses the racism (and racists) in America

artician says...

I agree completely, complaining about the flag, while I agree with wanting it taken down, seems like a ridiculously misplaced sentiment. I don't understand how that's the resolution people collectively came to in response to the deaths of innocents.
I do feel the flag is a symbol that does support an underlying system of hate, though, but in the context of the murders it probably has a laughable 0.00001% of jack-shit to do with them.
I'm sure our opinions are divided on what we should do to fix the situation as a people, but I think we both agree that there are better places to look for an appropriate solution.

Yep its that damn flag stirring the pot of racism. That Damn Flag, its gota go.

Is reality real? Call of Duty May Have the Answer

GenjiKilpatrick says...

So if someone is gonna make a simulation of the universe..

It would likely be some Fermi Lab scientist who wanted to study the Big Bang.

They would reverse engineer the expansion of the universe as much as possible..

[ a thing that's already been done and being tweaked to get even better Planck length "resolution", as it were ]

And once they got the best estimations..

Would dump all those rules and variables into a quantum computer and run sim after sim, checking to see WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END!

Much like The Game of Life sim developed by mathematician John Conway.

Swedish cops show NYPD how to subdue people w/ hurting them

Asmo says...

I didn't say they were killing millions, I said they were trained to kill...

US police conflict resolution is at the point of a gun as the first step. Most other countries where a reasonable rule of law exists teach conflict resolution prior to drawing weapons on people.

APC's, body armour, fully automatic weapons etc are not the tools of a police force, they are the tools of an army, but somehow small towns now feature APC's and heavily armed under trained SWAT or tactical response forces. Even US military personal have made the comment, all of the equipment, none of the training or discipline. If you are armed to the teeth and taught to shoot first/ask questions later, it's no surprises that your death by cops tally is so high...

For example, total Australian police shootings in the period 2008-2011 (for a population of 25 odd million or 1/13th of the US) came to /drumroll .... 14

And 7 deaths in Victoria over that time raised eyebrows.

http://theconversation.com/shoot-to-kill-the-use-of-lethal-force-by-police-in-australia-34578

US police, on the other hand, eclipse that total every single year, often by more than the per capita average (often by much more than the per capita average).

2015 (total: 150)
2014 (total: 625)
2013 (total: 342)
2012 (total: 611)
2011 (total: 165)
2010 (total: 227)
2009 (total: 63)

And it's just amazing in how many of those cases, the words "cleared of wrong doing by the district attorney, city paid out to a civil trial for wrongful death" appear. Or "shot while running away", "shot while unarmed" etc.

And to be absolutely clear, I have nothing but respect for most of the people that choose to bear that duty, but they are being trained to go to the gun first and foremost. If that is the first and last tool to resolve conflict, it's no wonder there are so many deaths...

Oh, I'm sure Asmo is right...the police in the US are taught to kill people at every opportunity.

I suppose that makes for a big fail since the cops in the US are so inept at killing people. Out of 12 million arrests, 593 people killed by cops in 2014 with about 1/4 of those being black people. But because you can't turn on MSNBC w/o a rehash of Michael Brown or Eric Garner, people think this happens every 6 seconds on the street.

Someone do the math, because I suck at math, what percent is 593 of 12 million?

Hubble Space Telescope fly-through of the Gum Nebula

newtboy says...

Beautiful, but I have an issue with these 'Hubble images' that aren't real images, but are interpretations of the actual images. It's hard to know how good real Hubble images are, because so many that we see are also nothing but interpretations.
There was a great NOVA about it this week, timed for the 25th anniversary of deployment. Unfortunately, I think they also 'interpreted' some of the images, keeping me confused about the real resolution Hubble provides. I want to see the raw, unaltered images, maybe side by side with an 'interpretation' to get a better idea of what we really get from Hubble.

Today on C.G.W.-Cop Goes Into GTA Mode And Runs Down Suspect

newtboy says...

As I see it, the intent was obviously NOT to just injure him, it was to kill him with the vehicle. No question in my mind.
From the first cop's perspective, the action is NOT reasonable in the least...just listen to him on the radio, flabbergasted and disgusted at the second cop's actions.
This was FAR from a "safe resolution", it's only by chance that the man wasn't caught between the car and the cement wall it crashed all the way through....and crushing him to death certainly seemed to be the intent.
EDIT: If a citizen rolled his car towards a cop at 1/20 the speed seen here, he would almost certainly be shot and charged with attempted vehicular homicide...we've actually seen exactly that happen in other videos just because the brake lights went off, and the cops were "justified" in that case.

Anyone else find it odd that those who constantly rail against the overreaching powers of government are the same one's who consistently defend overtly violent cops as if they aren't the governmental enforcers? Can you say "disconnect"?

The kid is alive. Messed up but alive.

From the cops perspective the actions seems within reason, all be it a (visually ) odd way of achieving a safe resolution.

I wonder that this event will get the victim from the suicidal state of mind to a desire to live again. As bad as this looks it might be a good thing.

As for the speeding cop. Should he have gone 2MPH - 10 MPH 20 40?

Should they have created a standoff at which point they would have shot at him at first sign of danger? Then have suicide by cop.

The kid is alive. Messed up but alive.

From the cops perspective the actions seems within reason, all be it a (visually ) odd way of achieving a safe resolution.

President Obama Reads Mean Tweets

newtboy says...

Stupid?....well, that's the pot calling the clear glass pitcher black.
Far better leader?!? If only I thought you might be joking, but I know you aren't.
Show me something Obama suggested that's worse than a single one of these Bush/republican plans
Free Bailouts-a Bush/republican idea, repeatedly, getting nothing for it.
9/11- warned about but completely ignored by Bush.
Katrina-do I need to say a word?
The second great depression- (according to republicans)-caused by republicans removing the safeguards put on the stock market and banks, allowing them to play fast and loose, totally screwing our economy.
Iraq-again, do I need to say a word?
Putting the Iraq war 'off the books' to try to blame Obama for the cost that was ignored during Bush-uh...yeah, keep trying that.
Cutting taxes while raising spending outrageously-that was Bush
Raising the national debt more than any president before him-I know fox told you that was Obama, but it was really Bush. Even the first years when federal income was severely depressed (thanks to the economy Bush left us with) he didn't spend like Bush, if you look at the REAL numbers, not the white washed, no war, no homeland security, no bailout numbers the republicans pretend are real.

Because the republicans decided that their plan was to obstruct ANY idea from Obama (clearly stated BEFORE he took office, and followed through), it didn't matter a whit how he led, they refused to follow. It's not about his leadership, it's about the republican leadership thinking that beating Obama is more important than governing. Refusing a 10-1 deal where for every $1 in raised taxes they get $10 in spending cuts....and they said NO! Get real for once, it's not Obama's leadership or lack thereof that's screwing us, it's partisan politics being more important than the nation...and we all know which side plays that game more often and harder. (EDIT: I do admit that both 'sides' play that game, however.)
10 votes total? What the F*&K are you talking about. You mean 10 REPUBLICAN votes in the house? You are simply wrong he only got 10 votes total.
"The House has never failed to pass an annual budget resolution since the current budget rules were put into place in 1974. However this spring noted that the GOP-led Congress didn’t pass a final resolution in 1998, 2004 and 2006."
..."And the politics of the moment are a far cry from last year, when the House and Senate easily passed Obama’s first budget on the president’s 100th day in office. The budget measure last year did not attract any GOP support."
Well...enough said. I know you won't really take any of this to heart, you drank the fox news koolaid long ago and facts no longer matter.

You are so stupid. George 43 spent like a Democrat but was a far better leader. At least he Led. Obama leads from behind, buried us with another 10 Trillion in debt, failed miserably on foreign policy and is a total loser domestically.
The only positive of his presidency is bring out the gays and bailed out GM ( well its unions).

His 6 budgets that he presented got less than 10 votes total. TOTAL. How fucking off base with America to only get 10 votes out of 600 total for all the years. In 2014 Senate rejects Obama budget in 99-0 vote. That's dismal
