Doug Stanhope - The Oklahoma Atheist

You would think the fact that prayer can be rigorously shown to have no impact on survival after a natural disaster or surgery would at least put an end to the idea of divine intervention from prayer. But to believers, personal anecdotes relayed by like minded adherents always trump statistics. After all, scientists and mathematicians are all godless tools of the devil.

Unlucky Soccer Player

Quboid says...

This sort of thing really isn't representative of the game. It happens and, as such, it happens too much but it's not the epidemic that it's made out to be.
It's always happened but it's only since we got a thousand slow motion any-angle replays that it's been noticed.

I don't know what 'the box' means but what the referee sees in the moment is nearly always what stands. No replays, no post-match analysis, unless the newspapers cause an almighty stink - causing justice to be dealt out based on media hysteria.

The official bodies say that this is to not undermine the referee, although I think it would be just the opposite and that FIFA and IFAB are undermining referees right now by letting TV views see all their mistakes without letting them use the same technology to avoid such mistakes. It wouldn't have taken 5 seconds for a video referee to review this and see what happened so he could relay this down to the referee who would book #7 for simulation and revoke #8's second booking.

It doesn't matter in the long run but IMHO, #7 doesn't look like a little pansy to me. He doesn't look soft, he doesn't look weak. Player #7 looks like a cynical cheat, not a softie. He's been clever and gained a significant advantage for his team.

He'd only look weak if anyone actually believed he was that hurt but no one did, he just forced the referee into making a decision (as he can't act like he didn't see it). I suspect the referee knew better, but he could only officiate on what he saw - the ball going from player A's boot into player B's face and even if player B isn't hurt that's against the rules if intentional. As play had stopped, it's rather unlikely to accidentally hit someone's face ... but not impossible, obviously.

There's plenty of tough players who I would not want to get into a fight with, but it's not as tough as ice hockey which seems to be a game for psychopaths. It's not as tough as rugby or American football on the whole, although the distinction's not as clear cut.

AeroMechanical said:

Yeah, but I hear they're giving players penalties and fines in the NBA for it now.

This, of course, really requires officiation from the box, which I'm not sure soccer has? Anyway it should. I don't watch a lot of soccer, and people are always telling me what a tough sport it is, but from the bits I've seen, they look like a bunch of little pansies to me. They should sort that out.

Now the pathetic thing about this clip is the Lawyer asked to comment on this situation. He cites No Laws, he doesn't seem to even be educated in the Law at all. How hard is it to look up? The guy who made the video didn't have a difficult time.

They relayed NO accurate information to their viewing public, and that Lawyer pretty much proved his complete incompetence. That's really bad man.

I'm not gonna argue whether or not it should be a hate crime, personally I don't much like the idea of hate crimes. But the report is staggeringly bad, you have to admit that.

Russell Brand on MSNBC Mocking Media

CreamK says...

Maybe it's too fast and complex for you.. Yeah, he uses posh words and rare terms but that's just one part of the act. It's a really nice twist on the other wise dumped down comedy. You compare a british and murikan cursing and the vocabulary is highly in the favor of the old UK punk...

Another good brit comedian is Tim Minchin, he has great vocabulary and some form of grace in his way of relaying information to another humanbeing. Both fellows makes people think and i like that.

As non-native english speaker, i enjoy good set of new words... Sometimes i wonder why 99,999% of the stuff i see on tv uses a lot of same words over and over to explain something that could be described with one word more accurately.

Why you shouldn't ignore the emerging surveillance state...

I thought you didn't give pretty girls tickets?

mindbrain says...

To be clear, in the original video the cop's lines from: "Pardon me" up to "sign here" are fabricated. Replacing the original soundtrack and dialogue of the lady relaying her address to the cop as he copies it down and spins the clipboard around for her to sign.

I'm an experienced sound editor. If there's one thing I understand in this world, it's audio and how to hide an edit. At its core this video fails to do that on several levels and all I hope to accomplish here is to educate people who want to learn how to spot a fake in the future.

I am 100% certain this is a fake, rendering it zero true value to the sift.

Don't you find it at all suspicious that in the original video the lady is audible whenever she speaks except for when she supposedly asks the cop the implied question? Why wouldn't she be heard then? It's because when he asks for her present address (actual dialogue) her actual dialogue (stating her address while he writes it down) is removed and the cop's zinger is shoe-horned in.

Notice the awkwardness in the jump in time between the the end of the zinger "sign here" and "This is not an admission of guilt"(actual dialogue). The difference in the fidelity of the audio (the fake dub vs the actual dialogue) is apparent. Besides that, it's just an unnatural rhythm of speaking forgetting that the dubbed voice is way off in terms of a match for the cop when listened to back to back at such a close proximity. The dubbers didn't have a large window of time to work within giving the dialogue a rushed quality which helps to expose it as a fake.

Also note the cop's body language while he is speaking to her throughout the original video. He frequently looks at her making eye contact when addressing her. During the false exchange his body language in no way reflects the bewilderment that is expressed when he repeats her assumed hushed dialogue.

On top of all that the dubbers failed to add foley of the sound of him handling his clipboard, a sound close enough to the cop to be picked up or cause interference with the cop's mic. There is just silence instead since they removed all sound during the exchange added a background ambiance loop (plenty of b-roll to draw from) and then dubbed in the lines which has fooled 110 (as of this post) into voting it into the #1 spot.

These are the exact kinds of tricks that are used in "reality" tv to take raw footage of people and construct characters in post utilizing the most sensational dialogue available and place a musical backing track to let you know how you are supposed to be feeling about a certain person or situation.

TL:DR See funny thing, upvote and move on.

aaronfr said:

While it might be dubbed for sound quality for the TV show, I saw nothing in the original vid that made me think they changed any of the dialogue. Seems unlikely she said, "I like peanut butter sandwiches." Followed by the cop saying, "You didn't think we gave pretty girls tickets?" The cop clearly repeats/paraphrases what she is saying to him, or at least it's a fair assumption.

Native American Shuts Down Anti-Illegal Immigrant Protest

I trust your sentiments for promoting this viddy include some overtones of racism-May I point out once again (and god we know how people hate to reflect upon their past mistakes), that in your history here on the VS burdturg, you mistakenly construed a remark I made as racist? As none recall save myself (since I was banned because of your OVERREACTION and not welcomed back until the old gaurd fizzled-out), YOU took personal offense when there was only derision directed at your manner, tone because I used the word "monkey" to try and relay my disgust for your PROCESS....

The internet has no color, brother and had I known your were a black man I would have used other language to describe your fucking idiocy at the time-

Why choose here to voice my grievance? Because I lost a few years on a site I love to your ignorance and attitude. I probably deserved it, I was a prick to a lot of people, and I offer an olive branch and a formal apology for ruffling your feathers.

Now-About these imbeciles protesting something they have no control over. Their signs should read-"We fucked-up and watched as 6 Administrations fucked us in the ass, and now were whining."

"Fast and Furious Social Destabilization-More Guns For Criminal Nationals From Mexico to Incite Race-Hatred...Fuck You Obama, Bush(s), Clinton, Reagan, Ford, Carter and Johnson."

Thrown in a few drunk native-Americans left to represent the pack and hurl insults at other ineffectual monkeys, and you've got a bunch of inteffectuals who'd be better off in Washington on the white house lawn, camping-out until something is done about the white fucks running the show.
You have to know at this stage in the game, that racism is used to incite idiots to make decisions (react) when they have no actual say in the decisions concocted for them because of a fucking broken government, or in the case of the United States, one that has been hijacked by criminal cunts. This includes immigration and the social destabilization that comes from the continuing dilution of our culture, language, and western civilization in general.

Why LEGO is the BEST Company in the World

Sagemind says...

Dear Lego, Consumer Services.

From the day I saw it on the shelf I've wanted the Star Wars Jabba's Palace Lego set. It looks relay cool and it comes with a Lego Jabba, the only set that does. It is my dream to own this set but my wife says, "Not in this lifetime are we spending $150 on a Lego set." (only she used some colourful metaphors.) My dreams have been crushed. If you can think of a way that I might be able to acquire one of these (perhaps from corporate headquarters), I would be happy to listen to your suggestions.
Sincerely, A lifelong Lego and Star Wars Fan,
Sagemind

Your views are inconsistent because you're suggesting her obesity is somehow impactful on others. If it's not that then your suggesting you're concerned for her health. If you're so concerned for her health (or others) then what about her mental health (or ours)? Arguably the most important form of health. You already admitted there is no polite way to tell a stranger that is probably already aware, that their weight is a health concern. I don't see how promoting forwardness with disregard to one's reaction/ feelings is any bit healthier. Not to mention the whole bully awareness month - which this is just a guess, but, doesn't that specifically entail "we" as a society passing stronger consideration for others feelings?

This is where we need to draw the line on the whole obesity/ drug addict comparison. There is NO NEED to throw tough love at an overweight person. Even if you succeed in pushing them to lose weight - you're changing the very foundation of personal relationships. Where does the bully draw the line at school? "Stop being so dorky?". Oh and I'm not a fan of letting our children carry such moral burdens. Their parents should lead by example. Lets not build a world where people push one another into choices even if they are good for them. Let's let freewill be freewill. If you really want to make a difference - befriend them, get close to them, within the "YOU can say that to me" walls. Actually give a shit about the person and not the idea of people. Stop treating that woman like an negative average in a large container and more like a PERSON.

Problem solved. Become their friend - follow time-tested relationship rules and then, and only then, can you relay such private and impactful information to them.

I am not sure how my argument is nihilistic at all.
I am not sure what mold you think I am promoting, aside from not being in a state which has been, by all available science, deemed to be u healthy. (read: not obese)
I am happy to address where you think my view is inconsistent, can you please elaborate?
Re feeling: I think that is fair, to a point. But to me, the spectacle this woman made of herself for someone writing her a private communique over the internet does not warrant ANYWHERE near this attention.
She chose to shine a spotlight on something perfectly hidden, for the purpose of, I don't know... you tell me? To stop imaginary bullying (in her case explicitly here)? To not feel bad about being overweight? I really don't know anymore. Its a bizarre reaction to wantonly make a spectacle of someone suggesting you lose weight.
You pretend to care for the health of others yet there is a perverse nihilistic undertone to your entire argument. The only thing in this for you is to point out that "people" should fit a mold that you and your constituents have deemed appropriate. Which furthers strengthens the overall bizarre and inconsistent view you're slinging. Shouldn't your dismissal of common morals/ sensibilities completely free you up from trying to impress or coincide with a particular group? The thing that bugs me the most is that you seem to completely ignore this person's feelings. It's as if, for the purposes of your argument having a body you have obfuscated her feelings or anyone else's for that matter.

tell me...how do you have plausible character development for Thor and Loki, a couple of demi gods.
when you take into consideration this is a comic book movie...and on top of it, the only reason the movie existed was to introduce Thor for the later Avengers movie...I thought they did pretty good.

thats why i used the word tepid.
it was ok.pretty god is fine as well.
i disagree with the dismissal of character development.i was a huge thor fan when i was a kid and there is a ton of back story concerning loki and thor (along with massive amounts of lore) but the movie really didnt touch on those things.not in any substanstive way to relay their complicated brother relationship.in my opinion anyways.

thank god joss whedon went in a different direction and portrayed thor much closer to the comic books (even his gleeful physical bouts with the hulk).

i mean think about it.while nolan has done a fantastic job with batman.singer dropped the ball with superman and green lantern was an abomination and due to those two last failures we may never see a justice league movie.

character development and plot wrapped in a tasty story is vital to a good movie.even if that movie happens to be based on super hero comic books.

What worst from my perspective as a cook as well, is how the servers then run back to the kitchen and begin to scream like banshee's at the grill guy/or expo(usually same position in a lot of restaurants), about how their app didn't come out on time and they didn't get their tip.

>> ^Shepppard:

@Skeeve
It's a decent thought process.
A lot of people would blame the servers for things not coming when they're supposed to, but they actually have almost nothing to do with anything.
Think of going to a restaurant. You sit, you order drinks, then it goes one of two ways: You order an appetizer while you decide what to eat, or you order an appetizer WITH your meal, but expect it to be out first (that is, of course, if you order an appetizer).
The server goes and essentially relays your order to the kitchen staff, and after that, it's completely out of their hands.
As a cook, I can tell you that Apps are supposed to be out in 7-10 minutes, and meals 10-15 (at least, at my restaurant) but shit happens. If there's 4 of you, and you divide your order up over different sections, it only takes one person to fuck up and cause your food not to go out on time.
Say you order Chicken Wings, your friend orders a pasta, another friend orders a hamburger, and your last friend orders a salad. That's an order for the person working the Deep Fryers, Grill, Saute station, and Pantry section. 4 different people come together to make one tables order of food, but if it's not up in time, and the entire thing is delayed..
..you blame your server.
Worst part about that, is they're the ones working off tips, while the kitchen staff is making full wage in the back.

Evacuated Tube Transport: Around the World in 6 Hours

MycroftHomlz says...

OK... Just the physics of this is slightly stupid on the face of it.

So. Take a plastic straw. Put another straw on it. And another. Do this until you have a straw that is 4 feet long. Now try to drink a milk shake. The resistance of a tube is proportional to its length. So to make this work you would need to have numerous relay stations to charge up the vacuum. And they would have to be enormous mechanical pumps, which would be a nightmare to service and operate.
