Funny Book Covers' Prank!!

Funny Book Covers' Prank!!

Naomi Klein in conversation with Katharine Viner

vil says...

Totally lost it at "indigenous communities gave generational expertise to help guide the way". Pretty pictures and words in the intro. A lot of emotional balast all over the place. On purpose apparently.

Made it to 35 minutes in.
Probably should read the books first before coming to conclusions.
Wait, is that how that works?

The whole fire metaphor - pretty much how totalitarian regimes come about. Lets NOT get excited and use our brains instead. The problem of politics seems to be that if you do that no one ever notices you.

The problem of this "emotions first" approach is no actual discussion is possible if everyone is hysterical.

Tiny Bombs in your Blood - The Complement System

Sagemind says...

Sure Sure, But I've seen quite a lot on this, and explained in more depth by more educated people in a simpler fashion and using microscopic video.

This guy trys, and the animation is interesting but it's like reading a book with every second page missing. You don't know what you're missing unless you already know it.

Or, in better terms, this is like a book report made about a book he's read lately. I appreciate the study which has gone into it, but it's very paraphrased.... which is sort of his style.

Each to their own, I thought it was great. It's a small glimpse into the mind bogglingly complexity of biological systems that most people have no idea even exist.

Jim Says Christian Leaders Will Be Murdered If Trump Loses

BSR says...

Considering that religion is a spinoff from the bible and the bible was created by artists, then their remains a puzzle.

Simply: God is love
God would be the character name of the person reading the book.

You are the creator of your world. Believe in yourself.

All you need is love. -Beatles

Love: Ingredients - Brain. Heart. Courage. -Wizard of Oz

Love with purpose.

So, instead of calling yourself, "GOD", I think "newt" would be perfect! After all you created it.

All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet (everyone you meet)
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come

question: What good has religion done that could not have been done better without it? Be specific please, with examples.

One of the Inspirational Books Online

Drachen_Jager says...

One person on Goodreads rated all his (your?) books 5 stars. Everyone else who read this one gave it two stars or fewer.

Nobody (other than your 5 star fan) on Goodreads has read the others.

I think the 5 star reviewer is a relative, friend, or the author's sock puppet. Either way it's pretty sleazy, and if you have to go to those lengths to get anyone at all to read your book it can't be very good. So I'll take a hard pass on this one.

I've said before in other comments that earth is home to many worlds. Each of us creates our own world with what we know or don't know. Some know they are artists. Others don't know or don't believe it.

Since the bible has been the biggest stumbling block on earth ever created, religions have been created that separate us. Don't get me wrong. I have been an atheist. I was raised as a Catholic and had to go to church every Sunday. I hated going because it was so damn boring and confusing.

Love on the other hand was something different. Something I could relate to just by some of the hot babes that were in my classes in school! I could feel the love there. But my love was limited. I hated being kissed on the cheek by Aunt Mary because she always got lipstick on my cheek and her breath stunk. Pretty shallow, I know.

Stick with me here.

It's been said or at least I've heard, God is love. That was simple. Brief. But it was also puzzling. Is it God or is it love. Which is it?

The only way it made sense to me was, God is the character name of the person reading the book. I don't need to believe in God. I just need to believe in myself. That helps me believe in others.

I learned that by losing someone I love.

Since then people tell me I should stop smoking cigarettes. I tell them that if I quit smoking today and then die in a car accident next week I'm going to be PISSED!

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... Aha-ah...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... You...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world... You...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one -John Lennon

All alone, or in two's
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall
Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall

Isn't this where

the only time I remember bring described as an artist was in my twisting of words and meanings, but unless someone considers this statement a work of art, I think I am not an artist, but I have been and probably will be. But not often, and very rarely self-styled. The same holds for creator, but creation is a superset of art, and is done almost constantly.

I think the phrase and intention "Is there anybody out there" covers/asks all three of your questions, so I'm happy with that answer but can perhaps improve on it with "Set the controls for the heart of the sun".

A Chair at the Beach

spawnflagger says...

If the 2 guys were different races/cultures, it might say something about how we should all get along.

And while the Asian guy reading the book didn't look like FreddieW, I was still expecting some crazy CG contraption that turned the chair into a trap and got both the guys.

A Scary Time

ChaosEngine says...

Lots of good comments here... this might take a while so bear with me.

@Mordhaus, I haven't read that book but I'd be interested to see his sources. Everything I've googled suggests the rate is really low.

As for Ford, obviously, I can't say for certain whether she is telling the truth. She may even believe she is telling the truth and still be wrong. I think she was entitled to the benefit of the doubt in terms of an investigation. Of course, it's possible she was doing this for political reasons, but that feels like a stretch to me.

@bcglorf
In some ways, I can understand the desire to remove the vexatious complaints cause. Coming forward with a report of sexual assault is traumatic enough already.
A) you may not be believed
B) even if you are, you're in for an experience many assault survivors have described as "being raped a second time"
If you add the possibility that your complaint could potentially get you sanctioned if no one believes you, that's a pretty awful situation to be in.

Now, I don't necessarily agree with this stance, but I can understand it. I think you would need to clear a very high bar to prove a complaint is malicious. Presumption of innocence applies to the complainant also.

"The first 3 levels of sexual violence ALL involve no physical contact and are entirely verbal. "
100% fine with this. You can be a creepy sleazebag without touching someone and it's still not ok.

"lots of people are very much arguing that lives should be destroyed then and there"
Sorry, I just don't see it. That said, if there are people arguing for that... I'm against them.

"We'll even right songs to laugh at them when they complain."
This song was mocking the bullshit "it's a scary time to be a man" line, and deservedly so. I'm a man, and I'm not scared of being accused of sexual assault. None of my male friends are scared either. But it fucking crushes my soul to think of how many of the women in my life have ACTUALLY experienced some form of sexual assault (and that's just the ones I know of).

@scheherazade
Completely agree that eyewitness testimony is borderline useless in terms of evidence. Go back through my comment history... you'll see I even said I doubt you could prove Kavanaugh's guilt. All I've ever said is that it warrants an investigation. (sidenote: I totally agree with @vil and @Mordhaus on this... polygraphs are junk science, but Kavanaugh's boorish behaviour should have been grounds not to confirm him).

Regarding your friend that was raped by a girl: that's awful, and yes, we really have to stop this childish attitude of somehow thinking female on male rape is either funny or that the guy was lucky. But it is unrelated to this discussion.

@MilkmanDan, I pretty much agree with everything you've said.

Being falsely accused of rape would be terrible, even if you weren't convicted. No disagreement there at all.

Doctors Urge Americans: GO VEGAN!

I’ve just finished reading The Angry Chef. I highly recommend it as a no nonsense, science-based guide to debunking fad diets.

I’m not sure I agree with everything written, but it’s nice to read a book that talks about enjoying food (even “bad” food) instead of punishing people for their choices.

ayn rand and her stories of rapey heroes

vil says...

No no no, being inspired by her, by itself, is indeed less offensive than being inspired by Hitler, the consequences are less dire.

But having the gall to admit publicly that you are inspired by her unconditionally is equally as bad as .. substitute Adolf where applicable.

By doing either you admit to be a self-conscious antisocial asshole.

I understand that reading her book can accidentally shove you in a better direction than before, and that is very unlikely in the other scenario, I give you that.

I was inspired by Vladimir Mayakovsky and Che Guevara for what thats worth :-)

So a general all-encompassing nod to her is just like a general nod to any evil. And you dont get out of that by quantifying evil and making it relative.
