RMR: Rick's Rant Harper Cuts Rockstar Scienctists

notarobot says...

>> ^seltar:

I've seen one other, and it was equally bad with regards to the camera work. Just because he's done it before, doesn't make it ok
The rants are fine, don't get me wrong. But he could've done without the camera theatrics. >> ^notarobot:
>> ^seltar:
Oh camera man, that isn't how you're supposed to move a camera. You're being silly, camera man.

Methinks you are unfamiliar with the rants of Rick Mercer, no?

The quirky camera movements have been a signature of Mercer's two minute rants for more than a decade. I've always thought that the camera style to be fun way to add punctuation to his speech--but to each their own.

Among my favorites are rants about Toronto weather, and his quality "It Gets Better" rant on bullying.

TYT - All Polls Say Obama Won Debate; CNN Won't Admit it

honkeytonk73 says...

I find it interesting that every presidential contest is 'close', convenient isn't it? Toss in a few so-called voting anomalies or quirky machines behaving one way in key areas, and just fine everywhere else. Software isn't emotional. It either works, or it doesn't. It is either well tested, or it isn't. It is either secure, or it isn't. If it isn't tested, if it isn't secure, if it doesn't work, then that means someone intentionally gave it the green light for release. Your bank machines? Super secure. Do you realize those who make voting machines also make bank machines? Why can't they make voting machines as reliable for transactions as banking machines?

The Big Bang Theory - No Laugh Track 1 (Avoiding the Shamy)

ulysses1904 says...

I thought the first two seasons were funny, when Sheldon's Asperger quirkiness was pretty amusing. But now that show has run its course, they got nowhere to go with it. Sheldon and Amy say nothing but stupid long-winded sitcom punchlines that definitely need a laugh track.

Oh ho!!!! The Kitty Queen makes Ruby!
I am so glad you weathered your rocky entrance to our quirky community. And to make Ruby!
Not just hanging in there but doing it in style.
Congrats big time!

Maybe it's because I'm a bit tipsy, but I think that's exactly what she meant... and doesn't give a shit about.
Our perception of her may endeer or alienate us to/from her, but if she wants to say something, she should just fucking say it! We could hate her for her opinion, or the way she expresses it, but at least it's [claiming to be] what she actually wants to say.
In an ideal world I'd rather scream truth to oblivion, than half-truths to the masses.
... or maybe I missed a <sarcasm> tag.
>> ^Payback:
I've been noticing how more arrogant she sounds the more popular she becomes.

I'm not saying anything about her content, or her intelligence, just the tone of her vids. They used to be quirky and fun, but lately they're getting sorta condescending-ish.

Meh, who knows, maybe she's letting the trolls (who attack anyone popular for no other reason) get to her.

Full Orchestra Flashmob - Beautiful and Moving

bamdrew says...

I live in a smallish town in the midwest; there is a community orchestra and a generally 'old-person' community band that play outdoors a few times each year. Also community theater. Also an inexpensive 'artist work space' thats really a big warehouse that a guy rents out sections of for people to work on, view and collaborate in art projects. Also... well, a lot more.

When I first got here I needed not only to find people and pay attention to postings about these things, but also to appreciate that these things are actually fun, and the quirkiness and unprofessional-ness of much of it can actually be charming when there is no pretentiousness.

Why does neat stuff like this only happen in foreign countries?
I mean, other than them all being arrested for disturbing the peace or street performing without a permit.

Or is this another case of Racial bias, that we put black men on different moral standards because we 'expect' them to act quirky like this and see it as source of entertainment? While when a white guy like Anthony Weiner does it, he's taken much seriously and isn't expected to act such ways. I mean what the fuck is going on here. Why is this 'awesome'?

The World's Coolest Candy Shop

Deadrisenmortal says...

Thank you, I had not seen that before. I met him just recently at a very cozy book signing here in Victoria, BC. He was promoting his new book of collected stories, magazine articles, and interviews; "Distrust That Particular Flavor". He is everything that you imagine him to be, shy, quirky, ironic, brilliant. Truly a rare individual.

>> ^aurens:

There's a badass interview with William Gibson over at The Paris Review, in case you haven't already seen it.>> ^Deadrisenmortal:
The first time that I ever heard of the term cool hunting or a cool hunter was in the William Gibson book Pattern Recognition written in 2001-2002. Regardless of any proof otherwise I am going to continue to believe that, just as he termed the phrase "cyberspace" and in essence predicted the prevalence of the internet in society, that he also invented the term cool hunting.
=) You go WG!
>> ^PHJF:
Obviously using "cool" in the hipster sense of the word.
