Starting WW2 Era Russischer Sternmotor Radial Engine

Does anyone know what the mechanism is behind that high-pitched, start-up whine? I love that sound but realized I don't actually know what causes it. It didn't look like it had enough RPM to be friction.

How to Make a Matchbox Microphone

Just tried it. I don't have any crocodile clips handy to make decent connections, but I can hear taps clearly and I think I can tell a high pitched hum from a low pitched one..

I'd have liked to have seen what kinds of sounds his 'high tech' solution can distinguish. The fact that he didn't demonstrate leads me to think it's not much.

Still, fun with kids, I'm sure.

But she didn't do my favourite. Y'know, the one that goes Pew, Pew, Pew with a descending pitch. It's the best one.

Also... the order is wrong.

Stephen Colbert on the Democratic Debate

Bernie said that climate change will limit resources like water and turn fertile soil to dust causing more struggle for what's left, which leads to more terrorism. Think Mad Max. He's right.

And no I don't mean social arts, I mean humans use social behavior to survive, and when civilization began around 10k years ago it allowed for proper division of labor, everyone pitches in and everyone reaps the rewards, symbiotic. Not a scary thing.

And when I said ignorant, I didn't mean it as an empty insult, only that anyone afraid of socialism is ignoring the facts.

Easy now, ol' Elon admitted a few days after that he over hyped his power packs and the whole "save the world with solar" pitch. His number didn't account for numerous problems ans was a perfect situation only.

I kinda agree with jmd in that the people with the resources to effect change are comfortable where they are since they are making all the money and do nothing risky to make it. Changing gears would require some effort to hire people to do the work...

Excellent. Now we're getting somewhere. By god, I will drag people kicking and screaming into making actual arguments with real data if it kills me.

That looks interesting. Does it account for transmission losses? What about areas like the UK with high energy consumption but little sunlight?

I just remembered two great examples (turn off your audio unless you enjoy obnoxious music):

During the Supercup in 2013, Neuer spent nearly the entire second half of overtime in Chelsea's half of the pitch. Here's one of his successful interceptions/clearances, 114th minute, Chelsea up 2-1:

Sometimes, his clearance falls short and comes back to haunt him:

Goalie scores outrageous back-heel equaliser in 95th minute

radx says...

Outside his own team's penalty box, a goalie is treated just like a regular field player. He can run up the pitch whenever he pleases, as long as he's aware of the risk that entails.

In fact, some teams have so much possession of the ball, their goalies adopt a sort of sweeper role behind their centre-backs, who often advance up to the half-way line. FC Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer being the prime example these days. You can often see him 30-40m in front of his goal, ready to clear any long passes behind his defenders.

In hockey, a team can "pull" their goalie back to the bench, allowing them to put an additional skater out on the ice in order to try to score late game-tying desperation goals like this. I guess this is the football equivalent of that?

In hockey, you can replace your pulled goalie with any skater you want (generally, they will be replaced by players with the most offensive upside or "clutch" scoring abilities). But I guess in football, maybe it has to be the goalie/keeper?
