What Freedom Means to Libertarians (Philosophy Talk Post)

It's true, BF, NR and I fill up threads with a partisan back and forth that - while fun - goes nowhere. I'm never going to convince blanco that taxes are not theft, and blankfist is never going to convince me that the free market has anything to do with liberty. But, we do have common enemies: banks, the military industrial complex, big oil and big business in general.

What if we joined forces? Why don't we 4 little fleas start a movement? We could do it right here.

NordlichReiter says...

I guess it's time for every one to have that bar-code and government issued cars now. I mean, shit, since free market failed.

I suppose it's time we just let the government decide every, fucking, thing. I mean look at the "cracker-jack job" they did with Iraq, the bailout and, fuck, the oil spill too.

Fuck it let 'em own the markets, they'd love the power to go to war at a whim; wait they already do.

Every one in here is missing the fucking point. There are three evils that influence the government; Bankers, the Military Industrial Complex, and the Big fucking Business. There comes a point in time when an organization becomes so big that it fails to see the negative effects it is causing, I'm looking at you British Petroleum or better known as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company and you Wall Street. The previous list can go on and on.

This whole; party, free market, regulated market, class warfare and the rest are all things that keep the people from seeing the real problem; lobbyists, and corrupt officials. The whole culture of government needs to change.

Partisan politics, keep fucking that chicken.

All thats "right" in one network?

What conservatives don't understand is that the Daily Show succeeds because it prioritizes entertainment value over politics.

Oh, I think conservatives understand that very well. That's what Fox News is, after all. Present the story in an unbiased manner? Hell no; let's just yell about it and get people riled up. Very "entertaining", very highly rated, debatably very successful.

Still, Right Network will likely fail because (a) I don't think most people want pissy partisan politics to be a part of everything in their lives and (b) I think they're overestimating their target demographic. Most successful shows may be produced by "liberal" artists and writers, but they have nothing at all to do with politics.

Washed up sitcom personality pimps a network which intends to broadcast original programming based on the partisan politics of the republican party? That's textbook terrible. I'm surprised you don't agree.
Check out the promos on the channel, which include republican reality shows, republican comedy showcases and another show where republicans play poker. It's a goldmine of fail

I can't speak for all democrats, but I generally prefer artistic merit over partisan politics in my television Hulu/Netfix programming. If the democratic party were to produce a themed political TV network which featured scripted partisan poker games, I'd be the first to tag it terrible.

In fairness, the Democrats would never need to make a channel like this, because artists, authors, directors, actors, musicians and other thoughtful creative types are overwhelmingly liberal (hmmmm..), and there is no shortage of liberal themes (love, forgiveness, compassion, fairness, cooperation, sacrifice, social justice) in modern cinema, music, television, print, theater, etc. - It's probably tough to make a compelling drama about tort reform or denying health care to poor people.

RightNetwork appears to be another failed attempt at emulating the popularity and success of The Daily Show. What conservatives don't understand is that the Daily Show succeeds because it prioritizes entertainment value over politics. I love the politics of TDS, but I wouldn't watch it if it weren't consistently smart, funny, engaging and unpredictable. When the right figures this out and creates something that isn't terrible, then it won't have to be worried about being called out for what it is.

They could be trying to build upon the success of the Fox News Network, but I think that the entertainment tastes of that demographic could already be fulfilled by USA and TNT. I mean, there are only so many hours of Murder She Wrote and Matlock episodes to show.>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

It's not from the 'Left' so it's terrible?
From the channel: Videos of terrible, awful What-Were-They-Thinking commercial/pop-culture products/releases. Terrible music videos, movies, TV show clips, toys, etc. Things that some corporate exec decided to actually give a green light. The sorts of things that you watch, and think "SOMEBODY should have known better that to release that". The stuff that's so bad, you can't help but share.

Quebec story on The young turks,Muslims stirring up trouble

Red says...

Note that this debate circle mostly around rights in the public services.

Some events that been push through this debate's strainer since some years now, to name a few:
A young Sikh men brought is Kirpan(tradional knife) to the elementary school. Should he be allowed to do so ?
In name of religion, a Muslim man refused to pass his driver's license test with a woman instructor.
Orthodox Jews required that windows giving view to women exercising be shaded in a community gym
Some muslims community are asking to be legally freed from work or study for the Friday noon prayer and be accommodate to do so.
In Ontario some people are legaly charge upon the Charia, should the Quebec allow such thing

Actual "Liberal" government (traditionally on the right) (generally get the early generation immigrant electorate) push the so called "reasonable accommodation" policy in public services kind of by opposition to the France "secular" policy in the public services. Reasonable accomodation advocate the right of expression in public services of religious symbol for main religion. The nationalist party (traditionally on the left)is pandering to the right wing of its party (the openly progressive and pro-union wing have been expelled from the party last week) and it's feeding what i'd called a negative nationalism which go along intolerance and racism on this issue.

This debate is now raging for more than a year here, although I didn't get into it, for the terms of the debate are completely distorted by partisan politics, and intermingled with emotional response arising from the erosion, or the fear of it, of "traditional culture". Consequences of a geopolitical-cultural encirclement and the ever-growing cultural and economic globalization.

So I didn't thought thoroughly about it. As for now, the questions i'm asking myself, is to where you draw the line ? What if my belief says that I should go naked to school ? Which beliefs will have rights and which won't ?

Hope that your distance will enable my fellow sifters to see clearer in this debate and help me by ricochet.

TDS: Special Comment - Keith Olbermann's Name-Calling

@volumptuous, yes that makes you a leftist. Implying that morality dictates being humane to people is now a "partisan" political issue, and for some reason is considered some sort of slimy dirty trick.

That's why I propose we just waterboard conservatives until they confess to secretly being concerned about the well being of people who aren't themselves.

Seems the whole movement would collapse once they realized that not everyone in it is as macho as they like to pretend they are.

Way to turn a video about blind political excesses into more blind political excesses.

TDS: Jon Stewart Rips the Hysterical Democrat Wusses

ReverendTed says...

Pwn'd.

To clarify:
John Stewart pwn'd this segment. Hilarious, concise, and well-dissected. "Hello, I'm ReverendTed. I'm a Republican, and I love John Stewart."

The Republicans pwn'd this election. Of all seats to win at this particular moment - Kennedy's.

The Democrats pwn'd the Republicans. Because the Republicans are celebrating the fact that they're no longer being absolutely dominated.

I'll say this: a Supermajority with an Executive of the same party is dangerous and damaging regardless of who is in power. The two party system is fundamentally flawed, yes, but when the parties know cooperation is necessary then things get watered down until they're palatable (or at least not patently offensive) to the majority of Americans - people who have nuanced and personal opinions about issues rather than the right-wing\left-wing party lines. The Democrats have crafted this health bill knowing that Republicans have been powerless to oppose it, and then accused the Republicans of partisan politics and refusal to compromise. "I live in New York, and you live in L.A., so let's compromise and meet in Philadelphia. What? You can't accept that? Well you just don't believe in compromise!"

Heh. Did I seriously just suggest that Americans have "nuanced and personal opinions" about issues?

Why We Need Government-Run Socialized Health Insurance

blankfist says...

What are you talking about? Statist and libertarian are the two parties? Are you mad? Republicans are not libertarians. Is this more of your revisionism? Disgusting rhetoric.

And, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine political advertisements and news commonly use fear to persuade audiences. Did you not see stick figures with blood shooting from their legs? Is this not a video that is stating, "if you stick with greedy corporations, you won't be covered and may die!"

No, you're right, certainly not fear politicking. My bad. Common sense has no place when partisan politics is being slung around like a monkey's feces.

Most Americans are Stupid - a proposal for an experiment (Politics Talk Post)

blankfist says...

I think this is a *quality idea, ponce. I've always said partisan politics is nothing more than pageantry at the Superbowl. Instead of O.J. Simpson vs. Refrigerator Perry (yeah, that's right, I don't watch football too often so my knowledge of the roster is limited to 1980s Pepsi commercials. So what?), we have Miss Arizona vs. Miss Illinois.

What your team is doing wrong or the other team is doing right is incidental; all that matters is the trophy and, of course, how your pageant contestant carries herself as a respectful lady.

Only the two teams with the most money will win, because only they can afford the best team roster for the payoffs... er, I meant playoffs! Playoffs!

Also, wouldn't it be an outrage to have a commoner compete in this pageant? Only the best, most beautiful, most groomed contestants should compete to sling pigskin for the two party system. Leave the spectating to the little people.

Partisan politics produces this crap.

How many conservative hosts...
Columnists
TV hosts like Morning Joe
Newspapers
Fox News

Together they produce enough misinformation to produce a wall. Obama promised to breach the wall. He hasn't even come close.

Bill Clinton on the other hand, did beat that wall down, and did it against much stronger opposition.

All these videos concerning U.S. politics and health care just have me weeping into my hat at the viciously partisan politics.

That other vid with the woman in the crowd yelling "watch glen beck" just made me so sad that someone takes an opinion clown as an authoritative source on anything.

Turn off the tv and read a book that makes you think instead of just confirming everything you already think. -sigh-
