Smoking vs Vaping
For me, the primary thing was that I use vaping as a means to alleviate withdrawal and to break the routine of smoking cigarettes. Smoking was just an automatic thing I did at certain times (after a meal, after a cup of coffee, work breaks, etc.). I used to always carry a pack of cigarettes around with me, but now I leave my vaping equipment at home (unless I'm going to be gone more than eight hours or so). Really, I think getting over just the routine of pulling out a cigarette and smoking it is the biggest hurdle. It's always good to keep in mind that between emotional dependence and physical dependence on a drug, it's the emotional dependence that is by *far* the more powerful.
Granted, I could have painlessly weened myself off cigarettes in a couple weeks with vaping (or gum or whatever), but I think it's probably better to stretch it out a little longer, and the instant hit you don't get with inhalation is important. Six months was my goal, and I'm at about four now.
It's pretty great really. I can smell things again and food tastes better and generally breath easier. I quit smoking once before cold turkey, but that only lasted a year. When I finally put this down, if I do relapse (which seems much less likely), it will be back to vaping rather than smoking.

Lethal Injection Replaced with New Head-Ripping-Off Machine
A campaign to stop capital punishment and a campaign to make the death penalty more painless and reliable are not mutually exclusive. It is alot easier to take an all-or-nothing uncompromising moral stance when you are not the one on death row.
!! Fuck me!
Maybe when faced with the unavoidable cruelty of killing a human being...
...maybe we don't 'double down' and try to get more creative with our process. Maybe we just stop.
Maybe.

Lethal Injection Replaced with New Head-Ripping-Off Machine
By zero progress I meant that if a state accepts a policy of capital punishment, I find it incredulous that the current mechanism of killing a person are so flawed and primitive. While the video of this post is a parody - one that demonstrates "new" technology - it is a shame that we don't have a very advance way to end a life. One that performs the task immediately, painlessly with absolute reliability.
I don't follow.
How is an injection "no better than" and "zero progress" compared to decapitation?
And what about ripping someone's head off and smashing it with a giant meat tenderizer? Isn't that progress?
Is it that you're taking an anti-capital-punishment stance? If not, what do you mean?
David Mitchell on Atheism
Which of those things were religious people stifling science or research? Also the one you cite in our country didn't actually happen. The gaining of gay rights in this country has been actually amazingly painless to watch because of the civil rights fights we've had in the past.
I'm not kidding you, religious people have very little power in this country, the reason why scientific research into say global climate change is because of oil companies. The corporations have WAY more say into our democracy so let's pick the important battles.
You're kidding, right?
We've had Arizona almost pass a law that legalises discrimination, and Uganda actually pass a law that where homosexuality is punishable by death.
Meanwhile 60% of Americans don't accept the reality of evolution.
I wonder where you get the idea that people DON'T listen to really religious people.
And I have watched Chomsky, and I agree that he's a good debater. That said, I've never seen Dawkins be anything other than polite even when dealing with unbelievable idiocy.

For someone who has admitted to being too much of a pansy to kill his own supper, you exhibit an enormous understanding of what goes through the head of someone that enjoys such a hobby.
I've got a story for you. When I was a child, I lived in a rural community full of hunters. Not my family. My parents taught me to love and respect animals. We had a couple of dogs I loved dearly. If stray cats showed up at our door, we fed them and gave them attention. If an animal was injured, we nursed it back to health. In school there were a small group of boys who came from a family of hunters. They were taught to hunt from a very young age and animals had no value to them, other than to be enjoyed as a meal. They would torture animals for the fun of it...throw rocks at the birds and squirrels to score points, stomp on them to finish them off and then skin them so they would have their trophies. They would pull the legs off live frogs. Pour gasoline on defenseless little animals and light them on fire. They got off on making animals squeal and would brag about it to whoever would listen. They also bullied kids at school. They didn't feel any empathy and got a rush from inflicting pain and making children cry and scream. One day I was walking home from school and saw the boys with a gas can. They had cornered a feral cat that I had been feeding and were about to light it on fire. I intervened which led to a violent confrontation and thankfully the cat got away. I hollered for a neighbor to help which scared them off but I still ended up being beaten quite badly. When I got home, one of my dogs was missing. We couldn't find him for days. I later found his charred remains in the adjoining forest to my property.
In case anyone was wondering, my user name "carnivorous" is a long standing pet name given to me by my wife (don't ask). I am not a vegetarian, I eat well balanced meals and have a garden where we grow a lot of our own vegetables and my wife bakes bread and other baked goods on a regular basis. We do make an effort to eat less meat and find other sources of protein such as beans, eggs, nuts and cheese, but when we do eat meat we don't let any of it go to waste and appreciate the animals who lost their lives for our meal. As I stated previously in the thread, I am not opposed to hunting if an animal is killed humanely for the sole purpose of providing food and I would prefer that an animal had a glorious life in the wild, ending in a quick and painless death. The issue I have with shang is not about the hunting, but his enjoyment of the violence associated with hunting and what he is teaching his children about violence and aggression. My children have beautiful innocent little hearts and care about the feelings of people, animals and even insects and I am proud of how I've raised them.
Think me a bully if you will but I have always been the sort that stands up for what I believe in and I will not apologize for that.
i dont understand all the flack peeps are dumping on @shang.
he hunts for his own food.
which means he does not support the grotesque slaughterhouse factories but rather fresh game with no gmo-fed poultry or cattle.no anti-biotic or cancer-ridden pork.
that should be praised ya?
or how about the fact that he is teaching his children responsible gun care and safety.
to not only be more self sufficient and self-reliant but also more responsible and safety conscious in regards to firearms.
how is this a bad thing?
oh...
i see.
its because YOU cant relate to how he provides and teaches his children so therefore what he is doing HAS to be some evil indoctrination to find glee in killing things.
so shang is an asshole because you cant get your head out of yours?
because YOU dont own a gun...
because YOU dont hunt for your food...
single-minded,unenlightened self-righteous twats.
my big sister and brother in law live exactly as @shang does.
they grow their own fruits and veggies and hunt (well,my brother in law does) for all their own meat.
my brother in law tried for years to get me into hunting.
i just couldnt do it and chose to be a hypocrite, much like @Buck,because i was too much a pansy to kill bambi.
i much rather prefer the killing be done away(far away) from me.
but the ignorance and presumption being displayed on this thread in regards to hunting for your own meat is..well..staggering.
oh ..
and before anybody decides to jump the assumption shark and start spouting off redneck and deliverance references.my brother in law is a retired electrical engineer and my big sis has two (count em TWO) doctorates.
/ends rant
/drops mic
jumping on a cat for teaching his kids to hunt...

Georgia Sheriffs Draw Blood for ALL DUIs Without Consent
I'd take the suspension on principle, and drive without a license for a year on the same principle.
Here's the real: More fatal accidents occur in the U.S. now due primarily to distracted drivers and speeding. I would appreciate a scale of punishment befitting the crime committed based on the frequency and resulting loss-i.e., a distracted motorist causing an accident gets a harder hand-slap for using a cell phone than he/she would for drinking 3 shots of bourbon. and goin' to the store for a six-pack after.
A sobriety test should be quick and painless:
Smell breath-Been drinking
initiate breathalyzer-legally drunk
License suspended for a year, and if caught driving under suspension, complete loss of driving privileges for 2 years.
Caught under suspension after 2 years suspension, 5 years suspension and 180 days of supervised, community service on a dirty state highway during the middle of the summer, rounding-up garbage and carcass.
If a drunk under suspension kills or injures anyone while driving, 5 years on a chain gang whose job it is to walk the entire length of State highway 8-hours-a-day for the duration of their sentences, picking up trash and planting marijuana and indigenous flowering perennials.
Make a spectacle of a repeated drunk offender if there is no rehabilitating him. More so with text-drivers, that shits worse than crack and invariably more dangerous than drunks, who are primarily on the roadways when most peeps are ASLEEEEEP!
Stephen Fry Confesses 2012 Suicide Attempt
It sounds like you're in the medical profession and know your stuff. I wanted to respond to this comment though because it makes perfect sense from the medical industries point of view. I understand why it would be common sense to classify such behavior as an illness, and I understand why that is the standard perspective, but I think chingalera's point, and one I agree with on several levels, was that it might not be (an illness).
You (I'm assuming) belong to an institution that has the authority on the definition, so today we live with the perspective that people with different forms of mental process have a disability because that "illness" does not allow them to function painlessly within modern society. It's a disruptive abnormality that needs attention and proactive care to correct.
Now, you could also very easily make the point that modern society is the construct, the abnormal element, and similar to what other people are saying already, the mental illness is a coping mechanism, or an "evolution", or a side effect of being conformed to this way of life that very, possibly, maybe, is not healthy or a natural state of existence for our current arrangement of biological systems.
Without getting into a multitude of specifics, when I look at it that way and all the issues we have in our lives, the Human Condition's complete lack of forward progress despite our civil growth, and also consider the fact that I, you, and everyone we know, spend the vast majority of their waking life dedicated to actions that other people tell us we must undertake under penalty of violence or imprisonment, I don't think it's an illness.
I agree that it's very unhealthy to live in that state, but I think it is strongly disputable between the cause manifesting itself internally to the individual, or within the environment they inhabit.
Illness is hardly the next step in evolution or human adaptation.
Would you say the same thing about cancer or heart disease due to a genetic predisposition in one's family genetics (removing the factor of personal choices that would lead to such diseases, like smoking or poor diet)?
