Ron Paul on Bin Laden's Capture

are there other people out there who would have liked to have heard OBL speak? the only information i have about the man came almost exclusively from my government, which sells information to me like it's selling me deodorant.

Google GEO TV. It's a Pakistani news network that has been frequently banned in the country and employs the only journalist to have interviewed Bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks. The coles notes version is that they largely agree on the facts regarding Bin Laden on both what he has done and what he says. The only difference, as usual, is the spin that is put on it.

President Obama's Statement on Osama bin Laden's Death

Payback says...

...and so the Boogieman becomes the Sainted Martyr. Anyone who thinks "gettin' OBL" was a good thing is as misguided and wrong as the people who think the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had anything to do with 9/11 to begin with.

I hope this doesn't throw gasoline on the fire. That asshole was loved by many. If they kill people for burning a Koran, I shudder to think about the next weeks.

Hey BB, I echo your hopes that this doesn't happen. That said, I do want to underscore that OBL gave the US little choice after what he has done. If there are any repercussions as a result of this, I would assert that this is an excuse rather than a reason.

To build on and slightly modify your analogy..... the crappy US foreign policy overall since the 50's represents gallons and gallons of fuel. If anything happens because of this, it's a spark to that tinder.

US Involvement in Afghanistan since 2001

Two things:

1) The Taliban offered to hand Osama bin Laden over to the USA if the USA would provide them with evidence that OBL was responsible for 9/11; the USA ignored the request.

2) OBL was allowed to escape at Tora Bora, he didn't "slip away." The Bush administration wasn't about to lose its best boogey man of all.

How close the Delta Force came to killing Bin Laden

THis is all fiction. OBL worked for CIA. They let him go in exchange for Big Brother new world where we have always been at war with Westeurasia.

Actually OBL was a CIA asset back in the good ol' days when we were in the Cold War with Russia. Point of fact, Al Qaeda isn't the name of a terrorist organization, it was the code name for all Mujahideen assets that were on the CIA payroll.

Mos Def vs Christopher Hitchens

osama1234 says...

I think what Mos Def was trying to get at, but probably didn't as he got all defensive probably due to his insecurities, is just the fact that OBL and al-qaedi DO have some goals. And i think he was trying to lead Hitchens down the road of what these goals are, and why.

When i say goals, i dont mean 'they hate our freedom'. I mean, they dont like US support of dictators in the middle east, the palestine issue etc. And i think he wanted to bring it back to how having random people in prison isn't going to solve the issue; as surely others will replace the positions (in the terrorist groups) of those held in prison unless a serious look at the source of the problem is looked at, which is basically the foreign policy which much of hitchens supports (such as the disaster that was going into Iraq).

And also, i'm surprised this whole discourse happened, without actual discussion of the fact that holding numerous innocent people, just because one of them might be guilty, is morally wrong.

"How We Lost the War We Won" Embedded With The Taliban

rougy says...

>> ^qbert:
Oh yes, that's what the war in Afghanistan is about, killing brown people. Sure! I mean, the Taliban "aren't exactly feminists", as this exceptionally morally-discerning creature has noted, but it's not like they refused to turn OBL over for trial after he murdered 3000 innocent people from 80 different countries, its not like the Taliban crushed the minds and souls of hundreds of thousands of innocents under a steel fist of barbarism, and defecated, just for good measure, on the treasures of Bamyan. These Taliban, they are misunderstood, and just because they treat cattle better than women, and believe that democracy and tolerance are evil, this doesn't mean we can't negotiate.

The Taliban did offer to turn over OBL if the USA would only give them evidence of his involvement. They never did, and I doubt it exists. OBL was the boogy man for an inside job. 9/11 was an attack from within.

I'm also tired of people being called "terrorists" when all they're doing is fighting against the uninvited army occupying their nation.

We haven't achieved shit in Afghanistan, and we never will.

Because we will always use military methods to solve our perceived problems, and that is, in and of itself, the real problem.
