Occupy Oakland: 2nd Police Beating of Iraq Veteran

"Pepper" Katehi speaks at UC Davis Rally

Boise_Lib says...

If we take her at her word.
Okay, she didn't know that in this post-Seattle, post-911, post-Oakland, Drug War obsessed America that the cops would use inappropriate violence against non-violent student protesters.

Well, then someone that stupid shouldn't be a chancellor of a university.

Occupy Oakland and Portland have been shut down...the crackdown is on so lets fight back!

That's just fuckn' dumb.
The establishment has already used unrelated violence (suicides and murders) to shut down occupations. All they need now is some dumb ass to start hitting (or worse by far shooting at) the cops.
What do you want? Change to the system--or really cool, mass violence.

That is not what I meant by "Fight Back" sorry if that was confusing. Ass.

So, what did you mean by "fight back" if you didn't mean what the words say?

Non-violent peaceful non-cooperation and resistance will always win in the end. Any try at violent rebellion will bring brutal suppression and the loss of the good will that the majority of Americans feel toward the movement--not to mention many dead people.

Shot by police with rubber bullet at Occupy Oakland

I want to see more of the video. I could see someone taking advantage of a loud bang and a flash in their direction to make a scene on camera.

That said, I used to live in the Bay Area. People avoid Oakland like nothing else. There is enough prejudice, racism, violence and murderous underworld there that it's like Northern California's own piece of Southeast LA. More so in some cases given that it doesn't get nearly as much press, and so a lot of things go down there that the media doesn't even cover.

I feel for the guy if this really went down the way we're told. I don't feel that any of us can rest without the entirety of the United States police force receiving massive legal repercussions and official reprimandation for the numerous offenses we've seen throughout this "occupy" fiasco. If this is what the bottom line comes down to for the majority of urban police in the US, then fuck them all. They are absolutely no different than the people they imprison, right down to those who share the same feelings as common citizens but still give silent compliance to these actions.

Why the Electoral College is Terrible

Hastur says...

Also, some of his numbers are way off. According to the US Census (see #29), 79% of the population was urban in 2000, not ~20% as he claims.

For a breakdown of metro areas by population, look at #21 at the US Census link, "Metropolitan Statistical Areas--Population by Age". There were 131 million votes cast for president in 2008. If you want to arbitrarily define urban as 1 million people or more, there are 126.4 million voting-age people living in metropolitan areas.

Sliced a different way, according to the US Census, a presidential candidate can get to 50% of that if they take the voting age populations of just the top 12 metropolitan areas:

New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA
Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL-IN-WI
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX
Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD
Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV
Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL
Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA
Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, MA-NH
San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA
Detroit-Warren-Livonia, MI

I don't know where he gets his numbers--maybe by using strict city limits?--but they're not even close to reality. According to the facts, in a pure popularity vote, a presidential candidate can safely ignore the rural areas and still win an election.

The electoral college is imperfect, but whatever you want to replace it with should do a better job of representing a diversity of interests--geographic, demographic, and politic--than a direct popular vote.

I bet the cop gets off Scott free!

Bah dum TST! >> ^TheFreak:

The cameraman's name is Scott Campbell.
I believe the police in Oakland are attempting to send a clear message to protesters with these actions. And that message is, "don't come down to the protest if your name is Scott."
