Now can anyone identify all of the anime characters? I'm not huge into anime but here are my guesses :

Bart is Naruto

Maggie is Pikachu

Marge might be Rangiku Matsumoto from Bleach?

Lisa is a character from Attack on Titan?

No clue about Santa's little helper or Homer.

10,000 Japanese Perform Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Ode to Joy

oritteropo says...

This video got me interested in exactly why 10 000 Japanese people would choose to perform a notoriously difficult piece, in German.

The Japanese call the piece Daiku and perform it every year in December. The largest of these gatherings is most likely the one in this video, "Suntory Presents Beethoven's 9th with a Cast of 10000," in the Osaka Castle Hall. It could also be the special concert from December 2011 which was dedicated to victims of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and in fact the pictures of that event look quite like this video.

It turns out that it is because in the first world war Japan was allied with Britain, and ended up with some German prisoners of war in Japan. In June 1918, German POWs gave a legendary concert in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, where they played the Ninth. Since then it has become quite popular in Japan.

There is an article from 2010 in www.japantimes.co.jp on this subject.

Are Star Trek and Star Wars Mutually Exclusive? (Geek Talk Post)

Sagemind says...

OK so I went through this as well.
Both my kids are certified Geek.

I started with super heroes and Star Wars but my kids went through all the phases from Transformers, to Mutant Turtles, X-men, Batman, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and Buffy and every possible direction.

What I found is you can't force one over the other. Expose kids to everything Geek and let them decide. When you see them heading into a certain direction, just go with it. If they see you are interested in it, then they will be too. There is always something new and geek right around the corner.

Today's kids have a wider range than we did, there is just too much out there. my kids are knowledgeable on most Multi-verses but every time I turn around there's something new - and sometimes it's them introducing it to me (Ben10, Naruto etc.) All you can be expected to do is put it in front of them and be involved.

My kids (now 11 & 15) constantly surprise me. My daughter can correct any of her male peers on the geek of Marvel Comics, Buffy, Dr Who, Dragonlance and so much more. She reads 4-5 new books a week and gets straight As in school for the last 5 years straight.

My son has gone through all the multi-verses (and loves them all.) He wears a Tick T-shirt, loves Big Bang Theory and understand every side-joke. Now he is the one introducing me to stuff. Books in his room include E=Mc2 and the complete biography of Einstine. Loves video games and can beat most of them over a weekend.

Don't hold back, throw it all at them and don't hold back.

Stay away from the ol'time evils: Tomas the train, Dora, Babar, Caillou, Disney's Cars and all that stuff.

I'm starting to not get new pop culture references. Does this mean I'm getting old?

Oh, no. Of course not. It means you are an adult. That usually takes until at least 30 these days at a minimum.
edit: Almost as soon as I wrote that, I realized the logical fallacy. Truth be told, in all likelihood, the 25-year-olds I know today who still play Pokemon and watch Naruto will never really become adults. I suppose maybe that isn't a bad thing though.
So being an adult means you can't like fun stuff any more? Fuck that!

That's about the size of it. Instead, you have to get all excited about mortgage rates and how much your job matches you on your 401K. Then you have kids, which people say is a lot of fun, but looks more like stress and a lot of work to me.

The other day, a friend of mine said he didn't need to smoke ganja any more because when his baby daughter smiles, it's better than any drug. I just about puked.

I just find Naruto to be fantastically entertaining, especially the end of the first show (as in episodes after 300 or whatever it is, hulu makes it easy) and all of the second. It's just gotten more and more fun over the years... if you can stand the 15 minute episodes and the DBZ-esque teaser episodes. The series starts out really basic and gets better as it goes along, but yeah, it's just basic entertainment and by no means artistic.
Fair warning on Lain... it only gets weirder, but its short.
P.S. The only way you'll likely find the Memories series (3 short movies) is through the internet for sure... and if you want to buy them on a disc, you'll probably pay quite a bit unless it's a bootleg or something.

Trigun is something I really need to check out. If you like that based on what I've heard both Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are quite similar so be sure to check them out. Both are excellent, especially Bebop which has some of the most amazingly artistic animation I've ever seen.

Also really need to watch Lain, saw the first episode but the oddness and lack of immediate direction put me off.

Naruto? Huh what's that doing on a top of anything list? I thought it was just standard shounen >_>

It took me a couple of tries to get into Mushishi but it really is great if you give it a chance. As you probably already know it's basically a bunch of mostly detached adult fairy tales. A few fall a bit flat especially in the first few episodes, but others are just brilliantly imaginative.

Shows:
1 - Trigun, hands down.
2 - Naruto
3 - FMA (the remake)
4 - Kenshin
5 - Hellsing
6 - Deathnote was OK too I guess.
7 - Lain
8 - Wolf's Rain
I didn't get into Mushishi. Too slow and odd for my tastes. One of these days I'll have to go back and checkout Lodoss and Gundam, but I have a feeling I won't like either. I'm really looking for something special at this point and I'm just finding a bunch of generic garbage that is either terribly animated or 15 minutes and episode for one lame season. I guess it's time for Cowboy Bebop.

Movies:
1 - Memories - Magnetic Rose (Highly recommended, hard to find, very hard)
2 - The Miyazaki movies, especially Mononoke, Spirited Away, Nausicaa, and Howl's Moving Castle... but excluding Grave of Fireflies, which I really didn't get into. Too, too depressing.
3 - Metropolis
4 - Origin: Spirits of the Past
5 - Steamboy was OK
