Will Smith smacks Chris Rock on stage at Oscars Uncensored

JiggaJonson says...

I confuse my heroes who are characters with the actors that play them sometimes.
Apparently, Will Smith is not the guy from The Pursuit of Happiness.
Apparently, Will Smith is not Fresh Prince.
Apparently, Will Smith is not that heroic pilot from Independance Day.
Apparently, Will Smith is an asshole.

Love the Academy's statement: "The Academy does not condone violence of any form", and yet they just did. Here's your trophy, congratulations. Pretty gutless. Can't wait for the first angry dad punching out a ref or umpire at his kid's game, and uses the Will Smith defense... "It was a bad joke so I broke his jaw". What an excellent role model.

I have read that Lee quote too. I think he meant any statues or monuments to the confederacy, but that's just my opinion.

I certainly see a distinction between imperfect but honorable men trying to do right and treasonous racists trying to found a nation rooted in the racist concept that ...."the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. "

I, for one, don't demand perfection from my heros, only honor, honesty, and empathy. Claiming other people are subhuman and naturally subordinate fails on all three counts.

I think it's important to evaluate the reasons many monuments were erected, in the case of confederate monuments it was done to oppose civil rights for non whites, install a permanent reminder of the pervasive racism the confederate was founded on, and to misrepresent history to minimize their ancestors treason.
In the case of the Lincoln emancipation monument, it was to celebrate finally officially recognizing the humanity of a large portion of the population. I would hope anyone bothered by it's depictions 1)understands the history of its creation (thanks for that) and 2)offers to replace it at their expense rather than demand its removal at taxpayer expense.

have read a number of Lee descendants were okay w/removing his statues, too. by now, i'd hope, most folks know R.E.L. said statues weren't gonna be helpful.

“I think it wiser, not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.”

of course, he was talking about a gettysburg memorial, so maybe he was reluctant to have a memorial at the site of his gravest error.

but the issue is like most things: complicated. like the lincoln emancipation memorial. get how the couchant slave is a downer, but the fact former slaves paid for its erection, the model for the slave was t.s. eliott grandpa's gardener, a former escaped slave, and is mohammed ali's direct ancestor - is kinda cool. maybe worth having around just to explain all the details around its history.

Epic St. Augustine fact drop. That's such a good one. America has a long history of being anti Catholic though so that is also some unconscious American nationalism. Look up the post-Whigs American political party called "Know Nothing" or Native American party of the mid 1850s. This kid is my hero of the day.

Curt Smith of Tears for Fears and Ted Yoder

ulysses1904 says...

Fun fact about this song and my hero Joe Strummer, from Songfacts.com -

Singer Joe Strummer told an interesting story to Musician magazine in 1988 about how he proved that popular 1980s group Tears for Fears stole a line from "Charlie Don't Surf" for the title of their hit "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." He was apparently in a restaurant and saw Roland Orzabal, lead songwriter for Tears for Fears, and told him that "you owe me a fiver," explaining that the name of their hit song was an exact lift of the first line of the middle eight in "Charlie Don't Surf." According to Strummer, Orzabal simply reached into his pocket and gave him a five pound note, effectively admitting that this had been the case.

(for the record it was from the first verse, not the middle eight as there is no middle eight in "Charlie Don't Surf")

Google tells me that our population is 10 times your continent's population. So I suspect we are much worse actors on the climate just by sheer volume.

I thought you guys were having record droughts down there? I don't follow things that closely -- I get sad and overwhelmed.

For us the first day of Summer is indistinguishable from the last day of Spring We really have three rather than four seasons here.

Actually Texas and California are likely to be as affected, or more so, than we are by increasing global temperatures (and parts of Florida will be the first to sink under the waves). Also, unfortunately, our own politicians have been just as short sighted. Our previous PM Tony Abbott had the dubious distinction of being voted (along with Canada's Stephen Harper) climate laggard of the year 2014/2015 (http://roadtoparis.info/2015/02/10/australia-canada-climate-bad-boys/).

Perhaps the apology should be going the other way?

I think I have hit the magic formula. Thanks to @EMPIRE. It was his idea.

As someone who loves to exchange ideas, I have learned that the internet just isn't a good place to have a conversation. We sit at our computers, throwing monologues at each other.

This one was a great example -- he said something untrue in the first sentence, I wasn't able to correct it, and off he went, building up a head of steam based on an error in reading comprehension.

I have done the same thing, of course. Built up a head of steam in error.

But empire's idea to actually talk in real time? Brilliant. I'm so thrilled at having a new tool for REALLY getting into topics.

And if they don't want to, well, they don't want to. I made the offer.

Empire is my hero.
