Michael Palin in North Korea - Special Edition
that was great
I'm a big fan of monty python and I recognized the name but couldnt figure out who Palin was until they showed the monty python clip, had no idea he was a journalist now.
Ive always thought that NK has been unfairly demonized; they were victims of imperialism and the cold war, and sabre rattling aside they havent actually gotten into any wars beyond their own independence/civil war. The food shortages and poverty, I believe the western powers have a big hand in (much like in Cuba, Chile, Venezuela, and everywhere else capitalism was shunned). Not saying i'd model my ideal society on them, but i dont think they are as evil as they are made out to be..

Airplane! Don't Eat the Fish!
I could never get into Monty Python, but I loved Airplanes, Spaceballs, Naked Gun, Police Academies, etc.
I watched the movie only about 10 or so years ago. But I clearly remember thinking to myself it was the funniest movie ever at the time... and then I went on a sort of classic comedy watching spree with the Naked Guns & Police Academies & Monty Python.... the latter series really tickled me pink... and are regular YouTube clips rewatch... My wife doesn't get Monty though.

Ready Player One trailer 2018
Though there are plenty of things in the book that werent from the 80s themselves. Mechagodzilla is from the mid 70s. Ultraman is from the 60s. Heck Monty Python and the search for the holy grail was in the mid 70s, but it really didnt take up till the 80s. Even lepordon was from the late 70s.
The oasis had mentions of World of warcraft and stuff from Firefly. Im pretty sure Halliday would have liked the Iron Giant, the 50s or the 90s version.
From what i hear, they couldnt get the rights to the Monty python bit. So they had to fill that part with something else, possibly the race. And they probably couldnt get the rights to war games either. The movie is gonna be a whole hell of a lot different than the book, but the general premise of the plot should still be the same
Spot on analysis. Don't get me wrong--I loves me some Iron Giant, but the point of the book is that everything significant in the Oasis (and thus significant to the Gunters) were things from Halliday's childhood in the 1980s. I do not doubt that an older Halliday would react to The Iron Giant positively, but it's against his thesis that the 1980s were a wonderful time to be a child.

jokes and metaphors in MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
This is Monty Python we're talking about. The fans overthink everything. We put the 'anal' into over-analysis.
Case in point, here are a few things that may or may not be relevant that he missed:
1) We see Bedevere tying coconuts to birds' legs to distribute them, as per the first castle scene.
2) When God talks to Arthur, both are played by Graham Chapman. Does this mean God is only in his/your own mind? The other knights react to what they see, but don't talk to him or reference anything he says.
3) You can see that when the black knight is down just just the one leg, he's actually played by a one-legged local instead of by Cleese.
There's lots of this rubbish, and we love it. I only just made up number two (although it is true).
As a bonus, here's a relevant XKCD:

Video should be retitled:

Noam Chomsky on René Descartes
I can never read the name René Descartes without Monty Python's Philosophers Song starting up in my head.
Fire starter lullaby
That actually isn't too far from reality for me, if you leave out banging the table. One of the songs my 2 year old loves before going to bed is this punk version of Nelly The Elephant. Once I get him into bed, as he goes to sleep a regular request is one of my usual songs (generally Monty Python or similar) sung as a monster in a gruff shouting voice.
Whatever gets the little
feckersangels to sleep.
