*quality *promote I always get mildly annoyed when I recognize that a show or film that is set in Seattle was actually shot in BC. Then again, I barely recognize Seattle anymore ... so ... GO Canada, eh?

File it under "mildly annoying" rather than disaster I wasn't entirely sure you'd know what it meant to brick it, but thought you'd ask if not

The recovery procedure is:

  • Download key from master server
  • Boot from recovery media
  • Recover using downloaded key
  • Leave notebook on the network for 2 hours to finish recovery
... short version is I need to take it in to the office to do the recovery. My notebook is deliberately easy to break so we can test possible fixes from the encryption product vendor... but no luck so far

The funny thing is that we have several hundred identical laptops, but only a handful are affected by the bug. Go figure.

Had to look up what brick meant. That is the type of shit my nightmares are made of. Hope things are better now.

^My apologies to any casual visitors to the site who might be offended by the "jokes" above. It is only a handful of folks who do stuff like that, and unless it is really egregiously awful, there is no mechanism to deal with it. There is a written policy that racist comments are grounds for banning. However, the site is also fiercely against censorship. So we are boxed into a corner.

If you are deeply offended, I urge you to contact the administrators of the site.

If you think it is funny or clever or just mildly annoying, then I am relieved.

World of Warcraft with Microsoft Kinect

MilkmanDan says...

GIMMICK! Gaming always has these cycles of little peripherals, control schemes, etc. that at best contribute a few fun experiences, but are always are advertised as revolutionary, incredible things that will forever change way we play games.

Some examples:
Nintendo Power Glove (NES) - worthless as a controller, for any purpose

Light Gun (NES) - Games worth playing that used the light gun: Duck Hunt

Super Scope (SNES) - the Super Nintendo version of the light gun, minus anything worthwhile to play with it

3D/"Virtual Reality" goggles, Virtual Boy (var.) - the next "big thing" is always 3D displays through glasses or head-mounted displays. Reality: the hardware has always detracted from the experience, ranging from mildly annoying at best to instant motion sickness / vomit-inducing nightmare. Good 3D software engines displayed on a flat 2D screen actually *did* revolutionize gaming in a way these likely never will.

Dance Pad/Mat control (Dance Dance Revolution, etc.) - Makes kids exercise! Watch all the fatties lose weight! Sound familiar? Reality: niche appeal, niche market, fatties stay fat

Guitar Hero guitar controllers - Kids learn to appreciate music! They can develop musical talent! Reality: learn to play a faster-paced, vaguely guitar shaped version of Simon!

I don't mean to suggest that some of these things aren't fun. However, I think this sort of thing is guaranteed to have at best a pretty quick flash-in-the-pan sort of popularity. The best ones are instances where the peripheral is designed to work and work well with one given game or type of game, and the cost of that niche input method is just added in to the price of the game it was designed for.

To me, Nintendo was insane to base the entire market viability of the Wii around motion control. Competitors will develop their own solutions (Kinect, for example) and steal away some of the surge of motion control novelty attraction. Once the novelty wears off people will realize that the controllers, keyboard and mouse, joysticks etc. that have been used as input methods for 30+ years have been around that long because they aren't gimmicks, they actually *(&%ing work.

NetRunner says...

I'm always impressed by the way people get so fixated on doing things the way they've always done them in the past, regardless of whether what they're used to makes sense.

It's mostly harmless, and mildly annoying when talking about application UI, but it leads to absolutely crazy behavior when we start talking about things that are really important, like political and economic systems.

Even if a new method is universally and demonstrably superior to the old one, there's always a nontrivial number of people who put up massive resistance towards having to alter their behavior, simply because they don't want to have to do things in a new way.

Why do people seem to think that those with southern U.S. accents are all rednecks? It annoys me.

This, This, This, and This. And throw in These for good measure.

I hope that you are explaining to me why people erroneously associate the southern accent with rednecks instead of justifying the attitude with pictures of the Blue Collar Comedy club and King of the Hill.

Shpydir: Are you saying that the accent is affected? My uncle has a very thick Texan accent and owns his own law practice, runs a retirement home, and plans weddings in his spare time. He does not wish to identify himself as a ignoramus. He grew up in an area where he picked up an accent. I know many intelligent and well-spoken people that have southern accents. That doesn't mean that they are self-selected or stupid. I don't understand that attitude at all. It's blatant, ignorant stereotyping, but somehow our community of high-minded sifters engage in it every time they see a video featuring people with southern accents. Go figure. It's not a huge crime, but it's mildly annoying to me.

Cheers again.

well whatever then, I still find it mildly annoying, if only because it requires me to expend the energy to move my cursor and click a second time... but I seem to never need that extra moment of consideration, especially when it comes to downvoting MINK's comments, yep, no hesitation there... ever.

Pat Condell - Why Does Faith Deserve Respect

persephone says...

Most traditional churches here in Australia are struggling to get a congregation together. Not a very oppressive force, to my mind. When the Jehovas Witnesses come to my door I tell them to leave, just as I do the cable network salesperson-although mildly annoying, it's hardly oppressive. If you are an atheist feeling oppressed by religious communities, you are paying far too much attention to other people's business.
