Why Everyone is Going to Iceland Lately

Spacedog79 says...

In the wake of the financial crisis Iceland refused to listen to the bad advice of the bankers who caused the mess and locked them up instead. This let them recover their economy instead of falling deeper in to the bankers debt.

F-18 Criticisms in the 80's mirror those of the F-35 today

Mordhaus says...

Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon say the F-35’s superiority over its rivals lies in its ability to remain undetected, giving it “first look, first shot, first kill.”

Hugh Harkins, a highly respected author on military combat aircraft, called that claim “a marketing and publicity gimmick” in his book on Russia’s Sukhoi Su-35S, a potential opponent of the F-35. He also wrote, “In real terms an aircraft in the class of the F-35 cannot compete with the Su-35S for out and out performance such as speed, climb, altitude, and maneuverability.”

Other critics have been even harsher. Pierre Sprey, a cofounding member of the so-called “fighter mafia” at the Pentagon and a co-designer of the F-16, calls the F-35 an “inherently a terrible airplane” that is the product of “an exceptionally dumb piece of Air Force PR spin.” He has said the F-35 would likely lose a close-in combat encounter to a well-flown MiG-21, a 1950s Soviet fighter design.

Robert Dorr, an Air Force veteran, career diplomat and military air combat historian, wrote in his book “Air Power Abandoned,” “The F-35 demonstrates repeatedly that it can’t live up to promises made for it. … It’s that bad.”

The development of the F-35 has been a mess by any measurement. There are numerous reasons, but they all come back to what F-35 critics would call the jet's original sin: the Pentagon's attempt to make a one-size-fits-all warplane, a Joint Strike Fighter.

History is littered with illustrations of multi-mission aircraft that never quite measured up. Take Germany's WWII Junkers Ju-88, or the 1970s Panavia Tornado, or even the original F/A-18. Today the Hornet is a mainstay of the American military, but when it debuted it lacked the range and payload of the A-7 Corsair and acceleration and climb performance of the F-4 Phantom it was meant to replace.

Yeah, the F/A-18 was trash when it first came out and it took YEARS and multiple changes/fixes to allow it to fully outperform the decades old aircraft it was designed to beat when it was released.

The F35 is not the best at anything it does, it is designed to fully be mediocre at all roles in order to allow it to be a single solution aircraft. That may change with more money, time, and data retrieved from hours spent in actual combat, but as it stands it is what it was designed to be. A jack of all trades and master of none, not something I would want to be flying in a role where I could encounter a master of that role.

As @ChaosEngine says, it is far beyond time that we move to a design where the pilot is not in the plane. There is no reason at this time that we cannot field a plane that could successfully perform it's role with the pilot in a secure location nearby. Such planes could be built cheaper, could perform in g-forces that humans cannot withstand, and would be expendable in a way that current planes are not. However, this would mean that our corporate welfare system for huge defense contractors would take a massive hit. We can't have that, can we?

It's full of...spiders

From the original creators of Fallout - The Outer Worlds

Mordhaus says...

'corporations bought, branded it, and started selling it at ludicrously inflated prices'

'From the ORIGINAL creators of Fallout'

'try not to break it'

Throwing shade at how badly Bethesda has messed up fallout since New Vegas.

“You know you didn’t have to shoot either one right?”

Roasting Bethesda quests, especially in Fallout 4

It was tongue in cheek of course, but they clearly were aiming at people dissatisfied with Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.

NaMeCaF said:

Where was the troll against Bethesda? More like they were trolling themselves with the "Try not to break it" because they're infamous for releasing shoddy quality work full of bugs and needing hundreds of patches before the game is even remotely playable.

Definitely going to be a wait until the "GOTY" edition is on sale for 85% off in a couple of years buy for me.

Vicious Dog Pack Attack

newtboy says...

You joke, but if the planet is to survive, something similar is necessary....but I suggest a more pure IQ test than political or entertainment affiliation.

I'm all for one in one out, so much that I got fixed with no kids, but there's no need for test tubes.....why take the fun out? Just snip parents after their first baby. That takes out far more than 1/2 the population in one lifespan without culling anyone. If we had done that 30 years back, we might not be in the mess we're in. Now we do need a good culling.

NaMeCaF said:

I'm all for putting people down. We need a great culling of the human population. Lets start with a Thanos like 50% to begin with and then see about putting in some factors like people who watch the Kardashians or think Trump or any other celebrity make great candidates for President. We should also make humans sterile and have a 1 out, 1 in policy with test tube babies.

I'd guess contenders for best sax solo in a pop/rock song Though I wouldn't put the Benny Hill theme in the same list, but would put on Tim Cappello - I Still Believe... Jungleland and lots of others by Bruce Springsteen... Pink Floyd's Us and Them...

Careless Whisper's sax solo, if Wikipedia is to be believed, was Steve Gregory, who's sax didn't have the key range, so they messed with the recording a bit, and when George came in, he liked it... Actually seems like that was the part of the song they had the hardest part with as George didn't like most takes from most people.

Not quite the way I did it with my ferrets, I'd put them in my lap and squirt some Ferretone on his tummy giving him a tasty mess to clean up while I clipped him.

North Carolina's Voter Fraud May Require A New Election

Are you using that phrase intentionally? "Nothing to see here." is typically used purely for irony.
So... you're either
a) A self-aware troll inserting hints he's just messing with us
or
b) A troll who doesn't have a 100% grasp of English idoms.

Which is it, tovarisch?

Steve Schmidt on Trump 'Stoking And Inciting' Worst Among Us

StukaFox says...

Steve Schmidt and Kevin Philips both piss me the hell off.

Both are directly responsible for the dissolution of rational discourse in American politics. Both have done incalculable -- and perhaps irreversible -- damage to America's democracy. Both said damn the consequences when they were conniving to force their toxic ideology on the American people.

Now they both have religion when everything's gone to shit.

To their credits, both have tried to atone for their sins -- Phillips with his book "American Theocracy"; Schmidt with his renunciation of the GOP and everything it stands for -- but the damage has already been done.

Phillips and Schmidt are both incredibly intelligent men and as such, they should have known better. That they're trying trying to clean up their mess is laudable, but that they made it in the first place -- and fucked all of us in making it -- is utterly galling.

Hawk127 Fighter Jet Flies Around Buildings & Beaches-Cockpit

Military Helicopters Flyby Under Brooklyn Bridge in NYC

cloudballoon says...

Why? Mustn't be that difficult to pull off such NOE flying for those skilled pilots and not that impressive to look at for the public...unless they actually want to actually alarm/unease the public. But IF the .001% chance of an accident does happen, it'll be a big mess economically, politically and a huge embarrassment for the military.

Is this done because of the UN General Assembly I saw & heard going on? It's the only reason that this makes sense.

GOP Stands by Kavanaugh Despite Sexual Assault Allegations

Mordhaus says...

It's messed up on both sides. The republicans want him in at all costs and the democrats want to delay until after midterms at all costs. Sadly, Dr. Ford is going to get caught in the middle, whether she is telling the truth or not.

newtboy said:

I agree, there's no proof the accusations happened.
There could easily be proof that contradicts her story, though, and if there is, it makes an FBI investigation dangerous for her.
If she/they can prove he lied under oath about details that can be proven, even if the underlying charge can't be, he should be disqualified to be a judge imo.

Far more worrying to me is the accusations he helped his mentor, Kozenski, hide his decades of sexual misconduct, abuses he was removed from the bench/forced into early retirement for but that Kavanaugh, his close friend and confidant, claimed to know nothing about, even though Kozenski had public websites dedicated to racially and sexually inappropriate materials and many accusations of inappropriate behavior at work, including forced pornography viewings in his chambers by female clerks.
Edit: if he's willing to hide one bosses crimes, what's he prepared to do for Trump?

Yes, I hope we've made some progress since the way Anita Hill was attacked for coming forward at great personal cost, but I doubt it. It's clear those in control are unphased by the accusations, true or not, because he's their only chance to drive the court far right. Nothing else matters to them. That is a sad state we find ourselves in.
