Judiciary Committee Hearing on Supreme Court Ethics Reform

newtboy says...

You fucking retard.
You don’t see any difference between public charity work and secret personal enrichment?
You don’t understand the differences between an organization making public commercials and individuals handing justices and their families millions in unreported cash?
You don’t understand the legal issue is the not reporting the money, hiding the actual bribes.
Guaranteed, the conservative justices ON TOP OF THE TENS OF MILLIONS IN BRIBES also sold their personal mementos and their appearance fees for charity hundreds of times, and if they reported it it’s perfectly legal (but immoral).

Is it disgusting that the 3 non regressive judges okey-doked the “nothing to see here” letter, and that should disqualify them too for a lack of ethics….and we can discuss that only after the 6 actual criminals are removed for not only a lack of ethics but for tax fraud and decades of submitting fraudulent sworn financial reports.

What Are You Doing With Your Life? The Tail End

StukaFox says...

I don't often say this, but fuck this video.

If you're 25, the end of your life is an abstraction and the whole "there's time to change things!" is a nice balm. When you're 55, your death isn't an abstraction, it's a fact of life that dominates more and more of what remaining time you have left. The awareness of impending mortality is insidious once you're passed 50. It creeps into every part of your life and every decision you make.

Let me teach you one of those amazing words the Germans come up with for describing various forms of existential agony: weltschmerz. Loosely, this is a form of sadness when one realizes what is versus what could have been. This is the compound interest of regrets and choices not made, or made poorly. Not only does weltschmerz grow with each year, its very presence amplifies itself because the more you know what could have been, the more you see what the cost of that absence is. Then, if that's not evil enough, that knowledge focuses the mind on the time remaining and how little you can do to negate the harm done, which then re-amplifies the weltschmerz.

You can slap whatever Hallmark bullshit you need on this to get through the day, but weltscmerz never goes away. It's always there. It's there at 3:00am when you wake up in a silent house and look at everything around you as consolation prizes for races not won. It's there when you see your friends succeeding in a million different ways that you didn't. It's there when you look at 6 million lines of text you wrote and realize you're not going to be Hemingway after all.

So fuck this video. I don't need a cutesy animated memento mori, I've already got a wall clock in my death row cell.

Here endth the rant.

(Nick Drake nailed weltschmerz perfectly in "When The Day Is Done". Here's the video to that song:

Republican Tax Scam Is Handwritten Nonsense

newtboy says...

Today another Republican woman provided lots of evidence they repeatedly dated when she was in high school and he was DA. Handwritten signed cards, yearbooks, guest lists, date mementos, witnesses, etc. ...and he's still ahead in polls because nothing matters to the right beyond party affiliation....nothing.
We are so fucked.

when 1 woman comes out and says something, I'm a bit skeptical; in moores case there's the women, shop owners, security guards, business associates, ... all saying that he was a creepy bastard and would try to date highschool girls when he was in his 30s; that's sick shite

"WHITE PRIVILEGE"...- A Message to Young Black (and white)

newtboy says...

Is anyone surprised that this guy has a large personal collection of slavery mementos?

He doesn't get that he's right...
.....church, one that doesn't get set on fire or shot up...white privilege.
Jobs where you get paid a decent wage for hard work....white privilege......
Police there to help you, not see you as the enemy...white privilege.

This was just another 20 minutes of a display of pure ignorance and racism....of course @bobknight33 thinks this is "truth" that disproves white privilege....but it's really a display of white ignorance and deep seated hatred.

That slave story was utter apologist bullshit. That did not happen, a slave throwing a fit doesn't get their way and aren't just allowed to keep their family, they get beaten to death. Just pure bullshit....like most of what he says.

Southern white farmers/ranchers are the biggest, most entitled welfare queens around, I speak from experience.

I'm a white man who lived in East Palo Alto for years, and I walked through it alone dozens of times after midnight. No one bothered me. I have seen black men accosted in white neighborhoods for being black repeatedly.

This was pure bigoted ignorance and lies, bob. Don't be proud of this idiot, be ashamed. It's not Christian to denounce and deride others who don't have the advantages you have, nor is it Christian to pretend you and your free ancestors with rights had it just as bad as slaves and blacks that couldn't even vote and weren't considered humans.

The only message of truth I see is the truth that many white southerners are insanely ignorant and completely devoid of empathy for others or rationality....but just try to take their farm subsidies for not growing corn and you'll hear about how they are the true downtrodden in society and the blacks are in control, all on welfare, and are the ones destroying the country.

The Best and Worst Movies of 2014 (Cinema Talk Post)

ChaosEngine says...

Oh man, there was some really cool and interesting stuff there.

And then .... Interstellar?? I'm with you on Nolan; I think he's great. I loved Inception, The Prestige, Insomnia, Memento. I even think The Dark Knight Rises is unfairly maligned (it's not as good as The Dark Knight, but it was never going to be).

But Interstellar was terrible... IMO his worst movie. It squanders a great premise and some amazing visuals on a story that's all over the place.

Put it this way, Prometheus was the closest I've ever come to walking out of a movie. Its stupidity was just offensive. By the end I was rooting for the alien, the rolling spaceship, anything to kill the main characters and end its god-awfulness. But by the end of Interstellar, I was just bored.

It's certainly not the worst movie of 2014, but it was the biggest disappointment for me.

Oh, and any top 10 of 2014 that doesn't include the Lego Movie is missing its soul

No my butt is just fine.

I really liked his Insomnia remake where he had nice performances from Pacino and Williams and Memento was amazing.

He's simply not good when he tries to do epic/action films. There's a good video on here examining the cuts and shot choices in the second Batman film and how it creates a confused narrative i.e the action has to be consistent and make sense. I can't place the link, something like "in the cut" I think.

BTW there was an odd media reaction around Batman (or it could have been Inception) where various critics were suggesting he was the next Kubrik. Anyone with common sense would see that's nonsense. He needs a few more Insomnias/Mementos under his belt before that connection is even dreamed about.

I do totally respect his desire to avoid CGI where possible which should be applauded from the rooftops.

Honest Dark Knight Rises Trailer

Deano says...

A pity then that there are absolutely no memorable characters of note.
This was in no way a character-driven movie. If it was you'd focus on one or two people and the story would be simplified. This was all about the plot which asks the characters to flit around doing stupid things.

I still don't get how the Nolan who gave us Memento ended up producing these awful, bland, poorly constructed action movies.

I used to laugh at Schumacher and Burton but their more fantastical imaginings of Batman work better. This is a man dressed as a bat with a stupid voice. To try to frame this "realistically" in a film doesn't work. And particularly not when you constantly take the liberties shown in this video. And the second film with that laughable cell phone tracking tech just underlined how lazy and poor these films were.

I'll say the first half of Batman Begins was good but then veered sharply away from the comics which inspired it. In fact the main problem with the trilogy is that ripping off Frank Miller and trying to mesh that with a more Hollywood style sensibility just didn't work.

Wasn't going to upvote until the Red Letter Media guys appeared. The constant nit-pickery of DKR gets on my tits. It's a character driven movie! None of the "plot holes" ever got in the way of enjoying it for me

The Dark Knight Rises - Trailer #4

>> ^Deano:

It doesn't help that I hated Inception and found Dark Knight rather tedious with the overkill terrorist theme.
I loved Memento and the look of that film but this action stuff and the blend of CGI and live-action doesn't scream eye candy to me.
I played against Bane in that Batman game by the way and I just kept dodging out of his way. Dude's an idiot!

The Bane we see in this movie seems to be a very different animal compared to the version of Bane we saw in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. I guess Nolan doesn't do wrestling mask wearing roid monsters, and I admit it wouldn't seem his style either. I did get my ass handed to me at first by Bane in Asylum as I'm kinda slow with console style control schemes, I'm a mouse and keyboard user at heart.
