What if Akira Was Animated At 60 Frames Per Second

cloudballoon says...

I can tell the changes in the animation, but it doesn't improve a thing about Akira, and needn't be. I upvote because of Akira, not 60fps (as pointless as the CGI added Star Wars Ep IV-VI... and I'm being charitable). Akira is something that every generation needs to be aware of and watch.

Also, if you have access to it, read the comics (manga). While I wouldn't say it's more entertaining than the movie, it's far more intriguing. Same deal with many of the Studio Ghibli adaptations (like Valley of the Wind). Go for the comics, you'll get more of an emotional rollercoaster ride than the visually amazing, but plot-weakened film versions.

so it would have tripled the cost and made it look worse.

people's obsession with 60+ FPS needs to stop. it looks bad and it's a shit-ton of work. its purpose is to sell more TVs. same with 8K+. even 4K is pretty overkill for most people's viewing habits.

Alita: Battle Angel - Official Trailer

00Scud00 says...

I'm not sure about the movie, but in the manga the world of Alita is full of cyborgs in just about any size and shape you can imagine. Sometimes it's probably a matter of fashion or identity, and sometimes it's about what you can afford. I doubt they'll do it, but I think it would be better if you saw some other cyborgs with eyes like hers, making it more like just another body or face type, and maybe it would look less weird if you saw a few others with those features.

Alita: Battle Angel - Official Trailer

RFlagg says...

I'm not sure how I feel about the anime eyes on Alita, and I don't know the source material(s) enough to judge how close it looks to the original(s). It looks like they are aiming to be based off the manga more than the anime adaptations of the manga, which puts me even more out of my element.

jmd's theory sounds plausible.

I've also heard the interpretation that since she is a full body prosthesis, it is meant to illustrate the detachment she has to her sexuality which sounds plausible although I hate to read too much into literature.

Might just be titillation, Japan is certain not shy about injecting sex into its anime. According to here, the manga series creator had a history of sexualised manga prior to GitS:

A brief bit of google fu shows that in the anime she's naked? Is there a point to that other than cheap titillation?

I can see where it could add to a feeling of vulnerability, I guess, but it feels like the movie makers are trying to have their cake and eat it.

Anyway, I've never seen the original anime (not a big anime fan), but I thought the suit looked ridiculous in the trailer.

Everything else looked pretty cool, especially the weird spider geisha thing.

Ghost in the Shell (2017) - Official Trailer

00Scud00 says...

Are you implying that white people are shitty to everyone else because they are white? Or is it less about skin color and more about how a dominant culture/race treats and mistreats others?
No matter which group is currently dominant, power always corrupts.

@Jinx
I'm not sure you could call this cultural misappropriation, I'm pretty sure GITS is owned by a Japanese company and sold the movie rights to Hollywood. And the credits will still feature the name of GITS's creator, Masamune Shirow, a Japanese man. So white people are not taking credit for something they didn't create.

People say they want to see more cultural diversity but they start throwing fits whenever someone uses a cultural element in their work and they themselves are not from that culture.
I see a world where older cultures are gradually going to mix together and become newer ones, this to me, is inevitable; and I look forward to the day where we can simply enjoy good works without all the moral hand wringing.

As for the trailer itself, I think it looks better than what little I've seen before. Although I am not sure I like some of the turns they are taking in the story that this trailer seems to imply. The first of her kind? I seem to recall there were lots of people like her in the mangas and the anime.

Uhm, nope. The far future is most likely to have less caucasians than today. The genes for darker skin color and asian facial features tend to be rather dominant. Also, white people are already outnumbered on this planet. Which is great, cause they're really shitty to everybody else.

Ghost in the Shell (2017) - Official Trailer

Jinx says...

What I find interesting is that modern manga evolved post WW2 and took a lot of influence from American comics brought to Japan by GIs . Characters in manga often don't really look asian, their faces are, if anything, exaggerations of western beauty ideals. If you did see flatter faces and almond shaped eyes it was often the face of a villain or fool. That said, Motoko is unquestionably Japanese, I think its a shame they didn't cast an Asian actress for the roll... but I guess in the end this is a western movie, made predominantly by westerners in English. It's cultural appropriation. Is it theft or flattery? Does Ghost in the Shell belong first to the Japanese, or does it belong as much to its western fans?

I just hope it doesn't suck

also Scarlett is nice to look at regardless.

I love to hear the opinion of japanese people on this. It's very unexpected and interesting. Really changed my perspective a bit.

Opinions in Japan of the White-Washing of Ghost in the Shell

Jerykk says...

Motoko Kusanagi is a Japanese charactor in the manga and anime. She will very likely have a different name in the movie because it wouldn't make any sense for Johansson to be playing a Japanese character. In fact, I'd be very surprised if the movie even takes place in Japan or has any Japanese characters.

Khufu said:

I get the issue, but at the same time, is it not just as racist to say that all the characters should be Asian because the source was Anime? I don't think these people are "endearing" or oblivious to important issues... they are just reasonable and level headed.

RedSky says...

I treat movies like these (like Oldboy, Edge of Tomorrow) as basically adaptations of foreign stories to Western society. It's not at all a surprise that Western audiences will generally want a Western lead, and studio execs know this. Besides what would be the point of remaking the anime/manga verbatim (besides converting anime to live action)? The original stands by itself.

What bothers me more is the inevitable dumbing down of the material. You can bet philosophical discussion on the boundary between human and machine, dualism and emergent bandwagon will be replaced by actions, explosions and CGI.

Ghost in the Shell VFX Behind-the-Scenes

Mordhaus says...

One view emphasizes events occurring during and after the Allied occupation of Japan (1945–1952), and stresses that manga was strongly shaped by United States cultural influences, including US comics brought to Japan by the GIs and by images and themes from US television, film, and cartoons (especially Disney).

There are two schools of thought on this theory; the link you provided is from someone who believes in the other school of thought, which is fine, but it is not the end all definition. Additionally, I never said the characters weren't Asian in the manga or anime, I said jokingly that they are drawn with western characteristics like the rounder Occidental eyes.

Clearly the original character is meant to be Japanese, and the studio certainly could replace a known actress with lots of draw power with a lesser known actress, but realistically this is meant to make money. Just like "All you need is kill" was redone and cast with money making actors as Edge of Tomorrow. In the end, the studio is selling a product and is going to want to make the most money possible, so casting will almost always go to an actor that pulls a fan base.

@newtboy I wasn't attempting to say that the character was meant to be western, I was merely joking about the art style. Sorry for any confusion I may have put forth.
