Lisa Hannigan - Passenger

lampishthing says...

And, *cough*, Lisa Hannigan...>> ^oritteropo:

I feel somewhat underprepared! Since all my favourite performers have at least one vid here on vs already, perhaps a eurofolk playlist is in order? I've been following Le Cargo, since every google search of bands I liked ended up there, and posting my favourite ones here.
For a non-exhaustive list to start, I would recommend these English bands:

  • This is the kit
  • Merz
  • I am Kloot

And these from the rest of Europe
  • The Swell Season
  • Melpo Mene
  • Alela Diane

I welcome any other suggestions, too

Could I request a European folk listening list from you in this thread, oritteropo?
You find some nice stuff.

I did see Pandorum. not too shabby. Dark City is in one of those two categories. You have to go old school for the fallen civ movies. logans run, damnation Alley, The Stand.

Dag, I totally feel the same way.

Did you see the recent movie Pandorum? Pretty incredible first 1/3 of the movie.

Can you recommend any movies or books in those 2 themes?

In reply to this comment by dag:
Weird - I had a much more positive takeaway from this trailer - but then I love this kind of stuff.

Actually, if I think about it - my two favourite SF themes are:

  • Generation ships gone awry - so the descendants don't know WTF is up and;

  • Back to nature, fallen civilization re-discovers technology

Additionally, Venice is awesome but NEVER go in the summer. It's super hot & humid, which means the canals stink (because they're also the city sewers), and it is CRAZY crowded with tourists. Go in the off season. Everything is just as beautiful, but you'll actually get to enjoy it. >> ^raverman:

For any considering it. DON'T bother planning the tower of Pisa in to your trip.
It's a depressing little trap town. It really isn't that interesting or unique when you're there. You won't have a good time, and you wont 'remember it fondly forever'.
You'll remember how disappointed you were and that you saw better churches and towers and this sucked you in because of famous bad architecture and tourists all getting in each other's photos. If you do have to go, don't make the mistake of thinking you'll stay a night and see the town. It's basically a ghetto bus stop of regrets.
Book 5 nights in the Ci
    nque Terre
and a further 3 nights in Sorrento instead and tell me this wasn't the best advice i ever gave you.

Yes, the same one. VS will approve the code (with a different ID and not a dupe), but after it changes it for the final submission, then it gets rejected to say code is invalid.

If I wanted America to fail

    oritteropo says...

If I wanted America to fail:

    • I'd build lots of coal fired power stations. Preferably right in the middle of major cities to maximise the health effects. Obviously I couldn't do it myself, so instead I'd just phase out the EPA and then let the energy companies do it. I'd tell people it was for prosperity.
    • I'd just close the schools... no, wait, even better... I'd let schools charge fees according to their results, and let private schools compete with public.
    • I'd teach the children that they live in the greatest country on earth, and they should never question that fact. In fact, I'd make it an offense to speak out against America... it's unpatriotic.
    • I'd remove all the regulations impeding business. This would increase the flow of wealth from the poor to the rich, but I'd say it was creating jobs (and market crashes just happen, they can't be stopped).
    • I'd phase out the metric system, see the point above, the United States of America is the greatest country on earth... and should be able to use whatever archaic convoluted system of weights and measures they like.
    • If I wanted America to fail, I would prey on the evil already in the hearts of the Oligarchs, and convince them to just keep doing what they're doing. It's for the greater good.

You can only do this for embeds which haven't already been posted to videosift, the one in the talk post has been submitted by critical_d.

Anyway, the trick certainly CAN work, and often does... start with the URL though, I haven't tried it starting with the iframe embed.
