STUNG by a GIANT HORNET!

newtboy says...

Great news...the Japanese Giant Hornet has recently established itself in Washington state.

Giant hornets are bee predators. They can decimate a hive in hours. Japanese honey bees have a defense against them...they can vibrate their bodies generating enough heat to kill the hornets but not enough to kill themselves. Italian and other European bee species don't have that defense. If giant hornets spread, they could be a death nail in the already struggling American bee/honey industries.
Also worth noting, they kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, but far more in China. They could be worse than killer bees in multiple ways. For instance, they can sting through a bee suit, each one can sting multiple times, and they can thrive in cold that killer bees can't survive.

Wild Bee Removal (Uninstalling Bees)

Even if they are Africanized Killer Bees?

newtboy said:

Please, if you have bees move into your property and need them gone, call a local beekeeper to come remove them. We need every healthy bee we can get right now. Don't call the exterminator, bee keepers will come remove them for free.

Could we, should we annihilate Zika mosquitoes?

newtboy says...

Whenever there's a mosquito vectored disease, people talk about eradicating mosquitos, but never consider their role in the food chain, and it is not a small role.
They also never consider the effects of the eradication methods, which are often poison sprayed into the air or onto ponds. Decades ago, a 12 year old boy designed and made a device for eradicating mosquitos in water using sound waves for a science project, and it worked. He tuned his device to resonate at the same frequency as the gas bladder in mosquito larva, popping it and killing the mosquitos without effecting anything else, and leaving no residue. For some reason, I never hear about that method being used, but instead often see people dosing small ponds with poison, oil, or bacteria, all of which harm other organisms.
Targeting single strains of mosquito with genetics may be a good way to deal with disease issues, but will certainly also have unexpected unpredictable consequences. I hope they remember the fiasco caused by creating killer bees and study the issue from all sides thoroughly before releasing them into the wild.

I think we'll get used to them sounding like lawnmowers. It doesn't matter so much on tv, but it was a bit strange being near the track and not hearing the million killer bee buzz.

That just ain't right.

Sloth Attack

TheFreak says...

Aaaackkkk!!!!

I told you! There is nothing more terrifying than a sloth on the ground.
Video does it no justice, you need to see it in real life to know the true horror.

I had a fer-de-lance slither by, 3 feet in front of me, while lying on the ground in Panama. It even stopped to give me the eye....meh, big deal. I was attacked by killer bees and had to walk 5 kilometers out of the jungle to get to a road...life happens. That sloth though....FUCK!

Africanized bees swarm during hive removal

>> ^AeroMechanical:

Why are they removing them? I understand, what with the bees all dying and everything, removing normal bee nests to greener pastures, but it seems to me that the killer bees may as well get the nerve gas.

Yeah, you sure wouldn't want to waste time saving the most productive bees on the continent when there's a shortage of bees threatening the viability of agriculture. That would be ridiculous.

Definitely could use a bit of moog or some Steely Dan Chords. http://www.hakwright.co.uk/steelydan/mu-major.html
In reply to this comment by dystopianfuturetoday:
I'm going to do a techno remix of it. Do you separate guitar and voice tracks? I know my dagsong is going to be epic!
In reply to this comment by dag:
DFT, Killer bees, Martin Scorsese, melted cheese, hopping fleas. (I'm warming up for galaxy)
