Mac Geek - Dag finally comes to his senses

Try making a poll - as the liberal kernel of the intarweb, videosift should have the power to take his voices from him...

In reply to this comment by Raigen:
Alright, Keith, I've had enough with the GODDAMNED voices. At first they were almost comical, and I was letting them slide just because you were reporting on the ridiculousness of the people in your "Worst Persons" segment. Now, however, it has gone too far.

I think I'm going to start a petition.

Perils of sharing the internet - advice please (Howto Talk Post)

My suggestion is to build an OpenBSD-based router network router running pf.

PF is what the United Arab Emirates use to block Skype use in the UAE (to force everyone to use the state-owned telco provider). It's extremely powerful, and while it may seem like overkill, I'm thinking that it would probably be the easiest way to get what you want.

OpenBSD is a open source, free-for-download BSD UNIX, originally branched from the FreeBSD code when one of the developers got an itch to audit the entire codebase for potential security flaws and exploitations. It's been called the most secure OS in the world. Every line of code has been audited for security flaws. PF was added to the kernel a couple years ago.

The PF firewall is extremely configurable.

But all this requires some requisite UNIX-hacking skills.

Daddy's Little Princess Is Wasted

I've been drunk many times, but even when you are so wasted that cannot barely walk, you still retain a kernel of "yourself" with different inhibitions lowered. Or that's my experience anyway, so I suspect that she just is like this but a little bit more held back when she's not drunk. I pity her and would avoid at a high cost.

The show is completely about exploiting her. It's like American Idol is not at all about finding a star, it's about using the rest of the schmucks to make a buck.

How the Cell Phone + Popcorn Trick Really Works

charliem says...

I would imagine that the table blocks a large portion of the microwaves that are emitted. That's probably why they only pop a kernel our two of corn instead of trying to fry and egg or something like that. I'm guessing doing this trick once or twice isn't going to really hurt you. Probably about the same as getting an X-ray. I wouldn't suggest doing it daily though, that would probably have some negative effects on your health. I am of course basing this on absolutely nothing at all. Just my weak understanding of microwaves and electronics.

No, actually its worse than getting an X-Ray.
An X-Ray is a single burst of radiation, for about 1/10th of a second.
This...this is continuous exposure for, what they recommend, at least 30 seconds.

Theres a reason your microwave has that shield in the window, and it aint to obscure your view of the food cooking.

The most power an X-Ray will emit is about 120kEv, that's equivalent to approximately 5.3*10^-23 watt-hours.
In comparison, microwave ovens are capable of outputting 1500-2000 watt-hours of power.

That is ~ 2,830,188,679,245,283,018,867,924 times more power than your typical X-Ray.

Safe ?
Mmmmm....

This assumes that the radiation from the microwave oven magnometer isnt occluded by wood, and you are practically right next to it, but even still, lets allow say 90% of the energy is absorbed by the wood, and you are standing at least 30 feet back (assuming the power drops off by a factor of 3 for each foot you are from the source).

So, 300 times less power from distance, and 90% less from the wood....thats still 6 watt-hours of power hitting you.

Thats still 112,347,114,500,000,000,000 times more potent than an x-ray.

Granted, microwave energy isnt ionising, like X-Ray energy is, but even still...why would anyone in their right mind expose themselves to that kind of danger ? The thing is made to excite (read: boil) water molecules. What are we, like 90% water ?

I dunno about you, but I prefer to not be boiled from the inside out.

No Channel (Eia Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

My feeling on the proposed channel is inline with Dag's. It seems essentially a videos.videosift.com channel. Perhaps that's mostly due to the channel name.

More importantly, it's off kilter for any one member to singlehandedly define so many new channels. Perhaps we need to etch in stone an official limit for how many/frequently a new channel can be created by a user. Maybe one per year would be good.

(The popcorn's good, but anyone have any Kernel Season's we can sprinkle on?)

Sort of, but not really. My wordings were caused by my drunkenness, but the kernel of what I said is still true. Religion is still the opium of the masses and the soother of the weak mind.

Grimm, no this was sarcastic, but not laugh my ass off funny. It's just not coming across as comedy.. maybe dark comedy. (checks for *dark tag) Lighten up.. That "kernel of truth" line was absurd.

Jinx, Swampgirl, and others....it's called having a sense of humor...even if that means laughing at yourself. Yes these are over-exaggerated stereo-types...but...like many stereo-types there is a kernel of truth in there.

I hope most intelligent people know this...of course like Penn pointed out there are many on the left who don't...those that think Republicans are "evil" and not just wrong.

And yes...Jinx I would upvote a "video that paints everybody left of center as a tree hugging, cannabis smoking sexual deviant" if it was made well.

The problem with the standing wave amplification theory is that it would require the kernel to be at a point where the waves are interfering constructively... and they seem to be all scattered about randomly. With interfering waves you create points where the waves interfere constructively (add to eachother) but you will also end up with points where they are interfering destructively (canceling each other out) so even though the energy at a specific point may be amplified the energy at an adjacent node will be diminished (relative to one phone).

You have the same problem in a microwave ( ever end up with cold spots in your burrito? ).

In short, the net energy of the system is not increased by wave interference (luckily, otherwise it would violate known physical laws )... so we're still dealing with 8W of undirected microwave energy in the system. Considering that the energy diminishes at a rate of 1/(4pi r^2) for a unidirectional antennae... you're probably looking at less than 1000th of that energy being transferred to the kernel. Considering that most cellphones have a dipole antenna which is nowhere near unidirectional (think about how you hold a cellphone when you use it, and where you want the signal energy to go... it's generally not straight up or straight down) I'd be confident saying they're effectively receiving no energy.

Popcorn popped by 4 cellphones

Irishman says...

There isn't enough power in one cellphone to cook the kernel, the point is that there are two or more phones accumulatively interfering.

It won't work with all phones, it will only work if all the phones transmit on the exact same frequency - the key is the you need 2 transmitters to set up a standing wave harmonic which increases the amplitude many times, in turn increasing the amount of energy exponentially (as a square of the amplitude).

Cellphones need to transmit back to the tower after each packet they recieve.

I found one other person so far who has also realised that this is a standing wave harmonic causing the boost in energy

Popcorn popped by 4 cellphones

Seems incredibly fake. Several others on YT have tried it and failed. One of them burned up the table cloth with the lighter they were using under the table.

Everyone who succeeds does the same overacting and most importantly, in all the successful ones they cut away after the kernels are placed on the table. They are probably setting something up during this cutaway.

Lots of people faking something doesn't make it real.
