Creationism Hits Springfield Elementary

fleetze says...

That analogy isn't sound, bhyphenlow. If we suspect someone of arson, we can look for evidence to support this claim.

The genesis account of creation has all the explanatory power of Alice in Wonderland explaining what's in a rabbit hole.

Quick Science Sift 11:Absurdly dangerous liquid mercury demo

farcrafter says...

It would have been nice to see some heavier metals like iron or steel floating in it, and maybe a marble or something glass. And touching mercury is barely dangerous unless you rub it on an injury. Hatters spent years touching and breathing it before they went to wonderland, and that was from breathing in a small hot space with poor ventilation.

American McGee's Alice - Cinematic Trailer

rembar says...

I read Alice in Wonderland when I was a really little kid, when I had a high fever. I had subsequent nightmares about Wonderland, truly creepy ones. When I played this game, it was like they came to life again. A bizarre, strangely enjoyable experience.

Nice sift.

I loved the comic when I was young, found it in the library, pouring through the tomes of books having to do with the history of illustration....the theme is the guy who eats Welsh Rarebit, having psychedelic dreams, and the illustrations are beautiful......kinda like Alice in Wonderland with bread mold, cultured cheese, and fermented spirits, instead of the opium....cheers

Simon and Garfunkel - El Condor Pasa (wonderful trippy song)

Farhad2000 says...

Inspired by winkler1's post!

I absolutely love this song and I had the wonderful opportunity to hear on vinyl over the holidays.

This is possibly the best-known Peruvian song worldwide, partly due to a cover version by Simon and Garfunkel in 1970 on their Bridge over Troubled Water album, which is called "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)" in full. Paul Simon used only the melody and wrote entirely new, unrelated lyrics.

Simon and Garfunkel are an American popular music duo comprising Paul Simon and Arthur "Art" Garfunkel. They met in grade school in 1953, when they both appeared in the school play of Alice in Wonderland (Simon as the White Rabbit, Garfunkel as The Cheshire Cat). They are well known for their close harmonies and sometimes unstable relationship.

The lyrics:
I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes I would.
If I only could,
I surely would.

Away, I'd rather sail away
Like a swan that's here and gone
A man gets tied up to the ground
He gives the world
Its saddest sound,
Its saddest sound.

I'd rather be a forest than a street.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.

I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet,
Yes I would.
If I only could,
I surely would.

Mister Rogers receives his Lifetime Achievement Award - 1997

Halon50 says...

What a wonderful flashback, and I'm glad this is the one that hopped out of the queue! My childhood has many memories of watching his show and exploring his imaginary wonderland.

My background as a child was growing up with other children at a local Buddhist Temple, just because it was the only place where (so my parents thought) I could meet and be friends with nice Japanese children around my age. However, I stood to learn far more from Mr. Rogers than any teachings of the Buddha or Sangha, and indeed saw that put to the test as my last visit to a gathering at the temple culminated with two of the adults essentially telling me I wasn't welcome there.

Thank you Mr. Rogers for teaching me acceptance in all people -- with few exception -- and giving such hope to everyone else around you!
