So it's Christmas eve, I'm having dinner with my parents in rural Colorado, they also have some of their friends and neighbors over, including a nearby neighbor who's a local sheriff, nice guy, I know him ok. Everybody's having a good time, laughing and telling stories.
He tells us this hilarious story about when he got pissed off and choked and beat a sixteen year old for skateboarding on the sidewalk. Killed the mood.

Lots of fun for him, but irritating as hell for anyone who doesn't want to spend a grand just to have a good time.

The tail aside, wouldn't the statistics of where people were having a good time and where not be kinda interesting? "Seems people get depressed at this restaurant, how about we go to that other one across the street where everyone seems happier?"

Let's hear for all the people willing to have a good time and not caring if they look "cool" or not.

In general I believe people should be responsible for their own actions as long as they aren't hurting anyone else.
My initial reaction to your challenge is that "No they should be able to kill themselves in traffic if they want" but upon further review I think you could pretty easily make a case that people tobogganing into traffic presents a risk to regular traffic since it could cause an accident.
So to maintain the peace an officer should take some action, now the question is:
"Should they help support a tradition of having fun and encouraging a happy go lucky attitude in their community? Or should they strickly enforce the existing norm of only having cars in the roadway unless there was a proper permit filed with the city to shut down the roadway for a predefined amount of time?"
I vote for the police encouraging a community spirit and building a repor with the locals in their community for this spontaneous event instead of showing people that they are in control and stopping everyones fun.

That was my point. Nobody wants to stop people having a good time, but there was a danger there, as had been established, and a number of close calls already.


It's seldom the police's responsibility to make sure everyone is having a good time: I imagine the police were tasked with assisting in re-opening the roads and keeping things safe. There are other places to toboggan, I'm sure, that don't involve the risk of getting hit by a bus (and there are other people who make their livings by making sure people enjoy themselves). And if an accident had happened then people would be asking the police why they hadn't taken steps to prevent it! It's lose-lose for the cops in situations like this.

Additionally, Venice is awesome but NEVER go in the summer. It's super hot & humid, which means the canals stink (because they're also the city sewers), and it is CRAZY crowded with tourists. Go in the off season. Everything is just as beautiful, but you'll actually get to enjoy it. >> ^raverman:

You'll remember how disappointed you were and that you saw better churches and towers and this sucked you in because of famous bad architecture and tourists all getting in each other's photos. If you do have to go, don't make the mistake of thinking you'll stay a night and see the town. It's basically a ghetto bus stop of regrets.
Book 5 nights in the Ci

Also.. that mentality doesn't work so well when it's between innings at the Tampa Bay Rays. That's generally broadcast nationally. And there'd likely be more of these videos if that were the case.
