The Revenant - Teaser Trailer

Mordhaus says...

Basically he got tore up by a grizzly, managed to climb on it's back and start knifing it to death, and then fell to the ground when his companions finished it with rifles. The leader figured he was dead soon, so he told the other two guys to bury him when he died and catch up after.

The history is a bit muddled on whether they got scared by Indians or just stole his stuff and left, but either way they took all of his gear and hoofed it. When they caught up, they told the leader that he had died.

So Hugh came to, with no gear, covered in a fresh bear skin they had taken off the bear. He was suffering from a broken leg, the cuts on his back exposing bare ribs, and all his wounds festering. He was 200 miles from the nearest fort, with nothing to help him and surrounded by hostile Indians.

He crawled, surviving on roots, berries, and remains of animal kills. His back became gangrenous, so he lay on a rotten log and let maggots eat the dead and rotten tissue away. Later he was found by a friendly tribe that sewed the bear skin to his back to cover his exposed ribs and gave him some supplies. When he finally reached the Cheyenne river, he fashioned a crude raft and floated down the river to the fort.

Everyone thought he had died, but he recovered fully. Later he decided he would avenge himself on the two that left him behind, but he spared one because he was too young and one because he had joined the army and was kind of untouchable. The young guy was Jim Bridger, who became a famous mountain man himself as he got older.

Drizzly Bear

There is a bunch of controversy up here in Alaska right now because it's now legal to bait grizzly bears to stations and then shoot them. It might be fun to set up bait stations with pools instead, like a bear spa kind of idea.

Last Week Tonight - Ferguson and Police Militarization

enoch says...

the situation in st louis did not just pop up out of thin air overnight.the tensions between the poor community (mostly black) and the police has been a festering pressure cooker for almost 15 years.

a particularly venal chapter in the st louis police archives is the RNC of 2008,for anybody to absorb some context on the militarization of a police force.

the tinder has been accumulating just waiting for the match.
mike brown WAS that match.
this is not new nor original.
it has happened before.

and as @lantern53 has pointed out:it is the chain of command that sets the tone of how that police force performs their duties.so if those in charge are authoritarian douche nozzles, that attitude tends to trickle down to the everyday cop on the street.

cops by their very nature are authoritarian due to their vocational choice.they respect the chain of command and the authority it represents.to follow orders is to be a "good" cop.

so i do not understand the ridicule that lantern is receiving.he is offering his perspective AS an actual police officer.i am not suggesting that he is right NOR that his opinion somehow exonerates the st louis cop JUST because he is a cop but rather we should listen to someone who actual IS a cop.

there is absolutely ZERO evidence that lantern is a bad cop.we simply do not know how well,or poorly, lantern is at his job.

there IS evidence, however, that lantern tends be a tad racist, authoritarian and contradictory.lantern may be a poor debater but that does not make him a bad cop.

though his defense of zimmerman does reveal an extremely poor judge of character.(seriously lantern?that dude is a full fledged cunt).

but i get it @VoodooV,
lantern is easy pickings.
a right wing authoritarian conservative commenting on a mostly secular left site?
its like shooting fish in a barrel.

sometimes lantern brings it on himself...i know.
his poor debating skills coupled with an almost embarrassing understanding of history and government makes him catnip to someone like you.

its
just
so
easy

i disagree with lantern, pretty much always and i agree that sometimes his biased rhetoric should be taken to task,if only to clear up the bullshit.

but you take it to whole new levels voodoo.
you follow him from thread to thread and chastise and belittle him and THEN act all hurt and shocked when he lashes out at you!

seriously?thats like poking a grizzly bear in the face and then crying when it rips half your face off.

you use the exact same tactics choggie used, but at least he was entertaining.

you are just a bully.
a hypocritical, sanctimonious bully.hiding behind the skirts of others who may find lanterns comments distasteful (which they certainly can be).this is a cowards path and just like all bullies, you rely on the silence of others to continue your persecution of someone who does not have the support of an entire site.

i find your lack of humanity disturbing.
and i will not be silent.
your actions do not deserve respect but rather ridicule.

Marine M1 Minefield breaching vehicle at work

poolcleaner says...

"In the 1990s, the U.S. Army decided it could not afford to continue developing complicated, maintenance-heavy vehicles for this purpose. The Grizzly program was canceled in 2001. The prototype developed never made it to the production lines."

THIS is why we "liberals" don't like so-called success. This. Success for what? So we can call human life a trifle? We can't afford to develop appropriate life-saving vehicles, and yet we have so much wealth in this godforsaken country.

It's godforsaken, because your Christ did NOT advocate material success. He cared for the tired and the hungry. Guardians of Democracy? More like a bunch of A-holes...

At least the military had an answer. I like the military, but I hate our "successful" American Judas'. Selling out their fake Jesus eeeeeevery freaking day. And for what? I hope His love doesn't buy them past the pearly gates because THAT would be a tragedy. I'll see you all in hell.

Bear Steals an Entire Dumpster

Reporter Gives Tips For Reacting To Bears, Bizarrely

lucky760 says...

Dublyutief!

"Lay flat" always reminds me of a couple who were hiking and they both did just that when a grizzly approached. The bear calmly started sniffing the wife then started chewing on the back of her neck and eating her brain while she was alive.

Still, that's the only chance you've got. Sucks.

Dog and owner close encounter with a black bear

Lann says...

Not all bears are the same.

Preferably it's best to not interact with a black bear that's minding it's business so that dog is a little shit for running toward it and I can feel the frustration of it's owner. However if the black bear approaches you with agressive behavior, you actually want to make loud noises and look big. If they do attack (which is rare), fight back with everything you have. You do not play dead.

Grizzlies are a different story. You don't want to get loud and act bigger like you would with a black bear or mountain lion. I've been that close to a young griz when hiking with my grandfather but we just slowly backed up and went the opposite direction. The bear just kept on his path forward. Same thing happened many years before with my aunt and him only they encountered a mother with cubs. They did the same thing and nothing happened. Funny thing was it was in the same location.

Spearfisher hitches a ride with a Great White

rich_magnet says...

A grizzly/shark. That I'd like to pet, in the wild.

Note from her narration she can read the shark's body language. People who megafauna usually know how to read their body language, and how to approach them in a way that's non-threatening. Neat encounter, cute story.

i like the video and the message, but there is no way i'm going to pet a grizzly/shark/whatever in the wild. I just see this conversation going on:

"What went wrong?!"
'For a moment I thought I could opt out of the food chain, but I was wrong.'
