New Math vs Old Math

vil says...

Segway.. is that still a thing? I thought everyone was riding those damn electric scooters now.

I like the graphic representation of multiplication as rectangles, works for me. Theory or method, I like to understand how things work so i can reinvent them myself whenever I forget the formula.

I Can't Show You How Pink This Pink Is

Buttle says...

He could have shown us a graphical representation of a typical monitor gamut, and where the pink lies (outside). He could have told us something about the human (or other) eye's gamut, and explained how the pink fits into it. But no

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Loudness War

kir_mokum says...

um, it's extremely nerdy and requires at least a minor understanding of recording techniques.

let's see.

dynamics is the difference between the quietest sounds and the loudest by amplitude. recordings with a lot of dynamics generally sound more natural and detailed because it leaves the transients more or less intact.

compression in audio is the reduction of those dynamics which generally has the effect of making the recording sound louder by RMS amplitude or the recording which is at the cost of the transient details.

the "loudness war" is basically the conflict between sound engineers that try to make a recording sound good and producers and labels demanding that the recording sounds loud so that it stands out from other recordings. this is done by compressing the recording and limiting it's dynamic range. to give you an idea of how much recordings are compressed vinyl records have a dynamics range of about 50dB (i believe) and CDs have a dynamics range of 90dB. pop recordings and especially pop rock recordings have a dynamic range of 3dB. jazz and classical records will generally use most of the available dynamic range and will be compressed very little if at all.

the ideal for most music is a well compressed recording that still retains the transient detail. something that is very difficult to do well.

the loudness war started approximately in the early 90s (i believe) and mainstream recordings have gotten more and more compressed to try and stand out from their contemporaries by sounding louder. what you're actually hearing in this video is the difference between a CD recording (with a dynamic range of 90dB, and probably using about 2-4dB) and a DVD quality recording (with a dynamic range of 144dB and probably using about 6-12dB).

i'm a little rusty, but i think that's fairly accurate. if you're interested in further reading i just found out that wiki has a good page on the loudness war. and interestingly enough the album this song is from is listed as an album that has been criticized for sounding like crap for the sake of sounding loud which basically makes this example completely useless and confusing for anyone who's not already familiar with the loudness war. to really understand the differences you need to listen to something that was recorded before the loudness war and a remastered version after.

here's a decent example of what the difference is. you can see how much info is missing by the graphical representation of the sound too.

Kent Hovind "Debates" a Biologist

enoch says...

ok....
this is pure tripe.
first, there is no sign of a debate.
for a debate to happen there has to be two opposing views.
second, while this teacher may have had a "born-again" experience, which is fine,he seems to be more prosyletizing than debating, which is not fine in the realms of a "debate".
i have seen kent hovind debate, his skills are less than extraordinary, and is usually left shackled by his own inept and circular logic by an experienced person of science.think it was dr bennet, but i could be mistaken.
the man built a museum in order to perpetuate his premise that dinosaurs and man lived at the same time.that alone disqualifies him in any rational discussions about creation.
mr hovind claims to be an evangelical, but in actuality he is a fundamentalist.
the written word IS the word of god...period.
to entertain any other theory, premise or reality is to deny his whole belief system.this is the main reason he promotes creationism so fervently.
the fact of the matter is:the bible is the written word of man and anybody who looks deeper into the matter will see that plainly.

so let me throw my two cents here:
first:there are 66 books in the bible (73 if you are catholic),yet there are in actuality 267 books of the bible, all by biblical authors.
why so many books not included in the bible?
nicea council of 325 a.d emperor constantine played a large role in its canonization.understand that before this time christianity looked far different than the christianity you see today, the current christian churches roots started in 325 a.d.
the bible contains the gospels (the good news) of mathew, mark, luke and john.
but there are actually 24 gospels.
*for all you heretics out there i suggest reading the gospels of mary, judas and thomas.you might enjoy the revelations of paul also.all are apocryphal books.
second:understanding that in the time of the biblical writings of the old testament (from the hebrew torah),sacred geomancy, astrology, numerology and a huge dose of superstition, influenced almost all religious texts.they were almost entirely metaphorical.
for example..the book of genesis, which has been written and re-written over and over,is actually a metaphorical representation of the tetragrammaton, which in itself is a graphic representation of creation itself, yet having little,or nothing,to do with religion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetragrammaton
to use the book of genesis, and all its obvious flaws,to explain and argue the validity of biblical creationism,is not only a poor platform, but lacks imagination.
the only reason i can surmise that seemingly intelligent people keep re-visiting this dead horse,is that they believe whole-heartedly in the "word",
and to allow any other belief is tantamount to having to rebuke god.
this is the fundamental flaw in..well...fundamentalism.
when your belief system is so rigid, based in bad science and even worse theology, you are doomed to either break or dismiss all evidence as heresy.
this is dark ages material, and should be rejected, but sadly its not.

one final note...
if the definition of science is:the study and observation of the natural, physical universe through testing and experimentation,to reach a consensus based on theory and fact.
and if you believe there is a creator.
a creator who created the known physical universe.
would it not then make sense that science is actually the study of god?
is that NOT a more poetic, and beautifully harmonious way of looking at the universe?
because to me science reveals creation to be a much more complex, profound and poetic place than the book of genesis.
who wants to be dust and a rib?
booooooring.
now the story of a single-cell organism fighting, scratching and ultimately co-operating with other single-cell organisms to form more complex, and ultimately what we see today.creatures of all unique and incredible forms.
now THATS impressive!
so ends todays sermon..

Maher, Garofalo, & Rushdie destroy Fund's defense of Palin

aaronfr says...

>> ^imstellar28:
does it really matter? anyone who is voting for either party has already lost sight of what's really at stake.
can anyone explain to me the differences between Obama/McCain's stance on:
1. preemptive warfare
"McCain supports the Bush Doctrine and Obama opposes it"

2. increasing the size of government
McCain talks the conservative game of smaller government but has supported all of Bush's expansion of the national government
Obama wants to expand healthcare and other social programs, but says that will come at the expense of other programs (subscribves to PAYGO philosophy)
Not so clear on this one

3. FISA
Obama pissed off liberals with support of FISA
McCain seems to be obfuscating his opinion

4. federal bailouts of businesses (such as feddie mae/frannie mac)
Obama - help homeowners shore up mortgages rather than bail out companies
McCain- too big to fail, bail out companies not speculative homeowners who are whining now

5. the federal reserve
neither cnadidate represents change on this issue (although it is a bit fringe for most americans to care about)

6. personal liberties
is this the FISA question again, or are we talking abortion? too vague to disinguish differences

7. bringing all troops home from all 741 military bases
Ridiculously leading topic that assumes that isolationism is the correct strategy

8. foreign policy in afghanistan
Obama - get Bin Laden, secure AFghan/Pakistani borderlands
McCain - get Bin Laden, but not in Pakistan. Iraq matters more

9. stance on the georgia/russia conflict
Obama - 'there needs to be active international engagement to peacefully address the disputes over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, including a high-level and neutral international mediator, and a genuine international peacekeeping force – not simply Russian troops.'
McCain - Georgia conflict is the ‘first serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War.’ [RIGGGHHHT?!?] Russia's evil!

10. the ICC
Obama - consult with military commanders and examine the track record of the Court before reaching a decision on whether the U.S. should become a State Party to the ICC
McCain - 'the ICC was not set up for countries such as the U.S.'

11. inflation
gonna guess that they're both against it

12. income taxes
McCain- continue Bush cuts for wealthiest Americans, give a few pennies to those at the bottom
Obama - let Bush tax cuts expire, give tax breaks to 95% of Americans
graphical representation

13. the war on drugs
Obama - reduce sentences for dealers, needle exchange, nothing about foreign policy
McCain - stronger borders, tougher penalties and sentences, funded wars against drug producing countries (i.e., Colombia)

14. offshore drilling
Obama - can be part of energy plan if it helps gain approval
McCain - we're gonna drill our way outta this in just 2 years, wait 5 years, no 10 years (ok... never)

15. the patriot act
Obama - YES to re-authorization, NO to expanded wiretapping
McCain - YES to re-authorization, YES to expanded wiretapping

16. the graham-levin amendment
Obama - no guantanamo, yes to habeas corpus, no torture, no forced testimony
McCain - no guantanamo, no habeas corpus, no torture (but not really)

17. supported school of economics
Obama - Chicago school of economics
McCain - admitted he doesn't know much about economics

18. creationism
Obama - "religious commitment did not require me to suspend critical thinking" from Audacity of Hope
McCain - doesn't believe in it but VP Palin sure does

19. agricultural subsidies
Obama - limit subsidies, try to get them to small farmers and not corporations
McCain - opposes subsidies, gets in the way of free trade agreements

20. social security entitlements
Obama - remove $97K cap, no privatization, no new commission
McCain - personal savings accounts, maybe raise the cap above $97K

21. the bureaucratic class
Got bored just thinking about researching this

22. national debt
Obama - repeal Bush cuts, end Iraq War, pay-as-you-go system, balanced budget
McCain - debt bad, balanced budget, stop pork and earmarks

The graphical representation may make things visual for us optically fixated mammals, but this music is not being converted to or stored as an image, nor graphically processed. Your analogy is intuitive and pretty safe though if you ask me.

Not much to my current one, really, it's Razputin - main character of the ever-aswesome game Psychonauts. His look in the picture just exhumes fascination and happiness, reflecting the feelings I get on a daily basis here on the sift. Plus he has the goggles, a necessary precaution on the interwebbertubenets.

I just knew I recognized gwaan's from somewhere, finally that's been cleared up, heh. Wildmanbill's I like, Thor FTW! Ah hell I like almost everyone's, it's interesting to see what people pick as a sole graphical representation of themselves

VideoSift Ideas (Sift Talk Post)

Anliz says...

- Search function for blogs (similar to the video search function.

- Emoticons for comments - Kept simple as to not cause comments to look like a message board (e.g. no signatures).

- A way to keep active blogs on the side of the window, just like there is a top 15 for videos. This will keep each user interested in the most popular blogs without having to force the blog front page to show only very active blogs instead of the newest.

- Graphical representation of statistics over a certain period of time, e.g. new posts per hour, votes per hour, submitted videos per hour, etc (suggestion made by gold-star member joedirt).

- More functionality added to Recent Comments, specifically the categories of "Blog Comments - Chrono" and "Blog Comments - Threaded" (suggestion made by gold-star member joedirt).

- More listing of "banned" or "discarded" videos, as much or more of a list of 50 titles instead of the current 5 (suggestion made by 100-star member mlx).

- More email notifications or at least the ability to request email notifications if a video has been changed (published, discarded, voted) or if there was a comment added to the video (suggestion made by 100-star member dag)

- Auto-search function on the title or tags listed in a video to check for dupes before submission (suggestion made by 100-star member dag).

- Minor HTML Change - When a video is being submitted, the button says "Submit Story" rather than "Submit Video" (suggestion made by gold-star member SnakePlissken).
