Cops Acting Badly

notarobot says...

Thank you for pointing out the linked article.

Let me expand on my thoughts here.

I have no sympathy for the officer in this video after the actions shown. I imagine that the best defence he could muster would be to show what happened leading up to the video we see here. I also highly doubt that such a “best defence” would come anywhere close to justifying how he (mis)handled this recorded interaction. The suspension is absolutely warranted. And I hope it isn’t short.

In regards to police use of cameras, I don’t doubt that some will behave unprofessionally in spite of a camera being present. But knowing that a camera is recording does deter some bad poor behaviour. This jerk cop even says that if he knew he was being recorded that he would have acted differently.

I have been concerned about how many police officers view cameras in general as a threat. I’ve seen so many videos where an officer lashes out about being recorded...

Recording should be viewed favourably. Dashcams are already common on police cars in some areas. They provide evidence, which can and should be used to back up the story filed on any police report. Ideally this recording should show how well the situation was handled by the officer involved. (Gold star for Mr. Officer Good Cop!)

If an officer is uncomfortable getting recorded, or feels threatened by the presence of cameras, they probably shouldn’t be doing what they’re doing, and if they do much of it, they should probably find other work.

If a cop behaves atrociously on a police camera and gets away with it, then the corruption lies deeper than just a cop out of line. And the consequences of that should reach into the administration until anyone involved in such a coverup is removed from public duty. They are no longer fit for the role, if they ever were. There is no room for fraud in an organization that is founded on the principles of upholding the law and protecting the public.

Knowing they were being recorded by their own cameras has not stopped MANY a cop from behaving atrociously in recent times, they just don't care most of the time, and get away with it nearly all of the time.

Real Time with Bill Maher - Racism in America

Straight up yes, just because your skin colour is white, doesn't mean you will be treated as a prince, I never intended to insinuate that at all, just look at the position of women throughout history, oppression works through many levels, class, sex, race, nationality, the list goes on, and I was only referring to race, and I should have really been writing in a manner which acknowledges intersections of oppression, so my bad, and good job chaos engine for calling out this failing.
This next thing is what bothers me, despite the anger and the vitriol expressed in this thread, all seem to agree with my central thesis of "don't diminish oppression which you don't experience" and "don't get your underwear in a twist when someone generalises about an oppressive group"

for example, I am English, and I will never try to diminish the perception of oppression that Irish faced, and still face today at the hands of the English. What's more if an Irish person says to me that the English treat them terribly, I would have to agree, throughout history and now, we have.

And this is the real crux: if an oppressed group says that another group that you belong to is oppressive, the proper reaction isn't go "OH I'M NOT LIKE THE OTHERS, PLEASE GIVE ME A GOLD STAR MR. OPPRESSED, ALSO SAYING THAT IS ACTUALLY RACIST/NATIONALIST/WHATEVER". The proper response is listen, so you can treat that person better, and hey if you are one of the good guys that stands up for oppressed groups good for you!, be happy with the notion that you are a good person, and not unhappy because you didn't get a pat on the back from said oppressed groups

We done yet?

Don't get me wrong, racism, particularly against blacks, is still an issue in the US (and other parts of the world). But maybe next time read a history book or two before spouting such utter drivel.

And if you really want to get into an oppression contest...
African slavery started a few hundred years ago.
The Irish have had EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS* of oppression by the English, and I haven't even touched on the godawful misery the Jews have endured for thousands of years.

But that's a meaningless pissing contest and it only leads to idiocy.

* I am culturally obliged to write that in all caps. Sorry, it's an Irish thing.

*promote cost two points ? (Sift Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

The list of Star powers is linked from the FAQ, it's like a reward for posting lots of vids.

It used to be more of a big deal prior to vs5.0, since a standard member with less than silver star could only ever use star points for *beg (many of the best videos end up in beggar's canyon ).

Now you can gift them too, and a gift of two pp's and a profile comment of "please self promote this vid because I can't" is as good as a promote (Or, alternatively, a gift of a single pp to a gold star and a comment of please please please promote this other vid).

Excuse me for trying to find videos to post that will get votes so I can have a gold star and be a useless piece of shit like you.

From Budzos profile: "The fuck happened to this site? Fuck you Yogi. How do I delete my fucking account?"
You think there is a problem on videosift but what you fail to realize is that it is people like you that are the problem. The only two videos I sifted this week and you made an effort to downvote them both. You haven't posted anything on here or used any of your points in over a year, but from the look of the subject of your videos, I can tell that you were doing the Videosift-community a favor by ignoring them thus far. You have a right to your opinions and I hope for your sake that you keep voicing them so that you end up pissing off the 'right people' who will do something about it.

How we give out moderating powers to Sifters (Controversy Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

How about an alternate star system for non-video-posting members? Perhaps a special peanut gallery badge for people who have been an active member for a year, or have posted 100 comments or cast 100 votes? Give blocked/nsfw/related/channel assignment at that point.

You could even have a gold peanut badge equivalent to gold star at some higher level (5 years?).

On a related note, should siftbot really award x years of membership badges to members who haven't logged in for the last 12 months?

Now don't hold me to this because I don't have any exact definitions in mind, but I wouldn't mind it if there was an alternate way to earn some powers so that long-time, active members who don't submit much don't have to be treated like second-class siftizens.

I think of it like a drawing where you can win either by making a purchase or just sending in a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE).

For members who've been here and participating actively for literally years, I always feel bad when they can't execute even the most basic of invocations.

But then I do also feel it may be too unfair to give them those powers when everyone else who has them got them by submitting videos. If a good number of starred members voted in favor of granting seniority-based powers, I think it may be a good idea.

How we give out moderating powers to Sifters (Controversy Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

I disagree. Firstly don't underestimate promote, but secondly few people realise how special *quality is until they have reached gold star and get promote too

Actually I don't really feel that strongly about swapping them... but I don't think bronze is the right time to get either.

Zawash said:

I think in particular promoting power should be awarded earlier. I think the Promote power should be available before you get the quality power.

Quality is a more special invocation - it causes the post to float high up just about forever, while the (in comparison) puny promote only seems to last for a few hours. A quality invocation is thus more powerful and special, and requires more judgement as to when it should be invoked. A promote doesn't mean quite that much, and it should be easier to promote other posts.

So - I suggest that promote should be available at silver, or rather already at bronze, while quality should stay at least at silver - it should IMHO be available after promote, not before.
