I don't advocate abortion either way. But I'll advocate making a decision based on reason, compassion, and the potential consequences of any action and situation. And I certainly advocate the right for people to make that choice themselves assuming they are well informed and aware of the reality of their choice.

BTW it sounds like you are religious, in which case you must be familiar with Genesis 1:29.

Clearly it is important in a presidential race to be seen as religious, which is a shame. What I don't really fully understand is why they don't roll with the oft favoured fallacy of argument from middle ground. Religious peeps, you can pretty much have your cake and eat it here... as long as you're willing to drop the whole literal interpretation of Genesis you can just use Evolution as more "evidence" to the glory of God's creation! Surely only a divine being would be able create a universe in which life is its own watchmaker! etc etc. Hey presto, you've just positioned yourself between those two extremes as a voice of moderation and at least America would get a Rep Pres that doesn't seem to be waging a war on rational...well, just on being rational.

Wait. Unless the point is they all want to appear to be more extreme than the other guy in order to pander to the smallest minds in the room.

Should gay people be allowed to marry?

shinyblurry says...

I can understand why people who are for gay marriage think this way about people who are opposed to it. It is the vocal minority who are acting out of hate and bigotry, and not following the teachings of the Lord Jesus, who draw all of the attention. The response of a Christian towards a homosexual should be love. That does not mean approving of the sin, but we love the person because they were created in the image of God and He loves them, and He sent His Son to die for them as well as us.

From a Christian perspective, I am against the idea of gay marriage for two reasons; One is that God calls homosexuality a sin. The other is that it was God who created the institution of marriage, which you can read about in Genesis 2, which Jesus quotes when talking about marriage:

Matthew 19:4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,
Matthew 19:5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?
Matthew 19:6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

I am also well aware that the world sees nothing wrong with gay marriage, because they believe man created the institution of marriage and not God. If that is true, that man created the institution of marriage, then what should it matter if a man desires to marry another man, or 5 men and a willow tree? But if God created it, then we are accountable to Him and have no right to modify it.

Clueless Gamer: Mortal Kombat X - Marshawn Lynch Vs. Gronk

Being an old school MK player (I think I stopped at MK3 when SEGA Genesis was still a thing) I got that feeling too... I was wondering if they just dumbed down the game and let fatalities be a thing at the end of every match without knowing any button combos or if they looked them up and cut the scenes in. Either way I think their reactions to the gore are genuine and hilarious! Also I'm buying some Skittles for the big game!

jmd said:

as much as its funny as hell when people like these trash talk in their games.. but so much of this was a setup. Any MK player will tell you a) you don't pull off many special moves by button mashing, and b) It seemed like every match a fatality was pulled off. Unless fatalities are now mapped to one button, not a single one of them would have been able to pull it off in the time allotted. Also the scorpion fatality looked like 2 fatalities that they showed back to back.

Considering that conan has admitted that some of these reviews are purely promotional, so much of the actual game playing seemed pretty set up. I can't even tell if the skittles thing was a paid for spot.

The Lord of the Rings Mythology Explained - CGP Grey

MilkmanDan says...

The Silmarillion reads very differently than Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, or any novel really... It has a sort of scripture / Biblical feel about it, even beyond the creation story that starts the book being a Tolkien-style Genesis.

But even beyond that, there is a lot of great material in there if you can get around the denseness of it. The story of the war that finishes off the first age is really, really good.

But before you give the book a shot, know that 1 page of Silmarillion takes longer to digest than 1 page of most texts. Very helpful to get the footnote annotated edition that has an appendix to refer to to help remind you when characters pop up that haven't been mentioned for a LONG time, etc.

Looking forward to this. I've been binging on the old Doctor Whos, Series 7 & 8 (Jon Pertwee & Tom Baker). They are so different to the last few years. The old ones had a real sense of menace that few of the new stories have. Not as cartoonish and some like "Genesis of the daleks" are so bleak they would never make them now. Less swelling music and melodrama, more hard sci-fi.

MilkmanDan says...

I'd concur but I'd like to see you (or Cracked I guess) expand on just how many parallels can be made.

I'd start with the opening of the Silmarillion, the creation story that is pretty much a better version of Genesis (the gods singing the universe into existence). Then I guess quite a bit of the rest of the Silmarillion is pretty Old Testament-ish; lots of begats, chosen people being kicked out of/leaving Eden/Valinor, more angry and active creator(s), etc.

I suppose maybe that makes the Hobbit and LOTR itself the New Testament, but no parallels are jumping out at me there. Frodo dies (almost) and then comes back to life, helps everybody out, and then ventures off to Valinor, so maybe he is Jesus...

Mount St. Helens: Evidence for a young creation

shinyblurry says...

The evidence in this video proves that certain features that we believe took thousands or millions of years to form can form quickly in a catastrophe. The reality is that the geologic evidence we find in the Earth is consistent with a world wide flood. It isn't imaginary evidence, it is out there for anyone to see and it is very well documented. The evidence, such as what you find in this video, is overwhelmingly against the deep time hypothesis, and when you discard deep time you are left with a world wide catastrophic event which matches the Genesis flood.

Stating explicitly that you are only seeing what you want to see is exactly why we can't give you any credence. When I wear beer goggles, I see exactly what I want to see as well, only difference being, I sober up after a while.Just because some book says one thing, doesn't mean someone else's book doesn't have other magical stories that discredit yours. You picked the one you want to believe in, and you'll find any imaginary evidence to back up your stance. Reality won't change that. And this video won't make the rest of us believe in fairy tales.

Point of clarification, I know there is lots of evidence of localized flooding, I'm speaking of a lack of evidence for the Bible's description of a world wide flood.

Also, my understanding of the first five books were that they all come from 4 older documents, which were segmented into the Pentateuch... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_hypothesis for more. I haven't followed up with more recent hypothesis regarding the books, but I was under the impression the general idea, even if it isn't the the specific four books originally thought composed the books, with Genesis being a combo of all four, which stretch into 500 BCE. The Noah story itself is combined of the "Jahwist (YHWH) source and the Priestly (Elohim) source", and the Priestly would be after the exile, though the Jahwist would be well before the exile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_flood_narrative and it's link to flood myths overall). I know Wikipedia isn't the most reliable of sources, and without taking the time to vet the sources they quote, I'll go with the explanation given for the moment.

Also, I'm into seeing it. I'm sure it will be entertaining. Aronofsky alone makes it worth considering at the very least... Biblical epics (and semi Biblical movies such as Ben-Hur...) can make for great cinema. So count me in... Even when I was a Christian I started doubting the flood story as anything more than a parable or allegory, much like the Creation story, Jonah, Sodom's destruction and the rescue of Lot... and there are some good stories to tell... perhaps some exposure to other myths would be nice, but I think the Abramic stories are more familiar to more Americans and world wide audiences than say trying to make a movie about some Celtic god... or Nordic god (Thor doesn't count...)... most of which they'd butcher in Hollywood anyhow...

Big Budget Hollywood Movie About Noah's Ark with Russel Crow

islaywombats says...

They wouldn't have learned about the Epic of Gilgamesh during the Babylonian Exile! The exiles were WAY later than the book of Genesis was written. They would have learned about it in Egypt or before. As I understand it, the book of Genesis was written during the Israelites' flight through the wilderness (what the book of Exodus is about).

But yes, I agree there are flood myths pre-dating the Hebrew scriptures and I'm eager to see what the Christian community does with this movie.

Also, I agree with charliem. There is evidence of localized flooding that could have given rise to the many flood myths among Ancient Near Eastern peoples. One fascinating theory is that a major flood happened when the Bosporus Strait collapsed and the water levels of the Mediterranean and Black Seas equalized. It's in the book "Noah's Flood" - http://amzn.to/1ieH4GX

First poor Tugger, now an ark... LOL.

I wonder how they will explain how all the animals got there, and how all the animals in the world fit in a rather small boat (large for its age to be sure)... and how it is nearly a word for word copy of a much older Sumerian flood story that the Hebrew people would have learned about during the Babylonian Exile period... and how there is no physical evidence of the flood, let alone the 4500 years ago it would have happened according to the Bible...
