Could Earth's Heat Solve Our Energy Problems?

Spacedog79 says...

You'd be surprised.

Geothermal try to keep public exposure to less than 1 mSv per year.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283106142_Natural_radionuclides_in_deep_geothermal_heat_and_power_plants_of_Germany

Living near a Nuclear Power station will get you about 0.00009 mSv/year.

Living in Fukushima will get you about 10 mSv in a lifetime, with life expectancy there at about 84 years that is 0.177 mSv/year.

https://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/a_e/fukushima/faqs-fukushima/en/

Even Chernobyl is almost entirely background radiation now. Radiation is all scaremongering and misinformation these days, so people freak out about it but it really isn't that dangerous. It takes about 100 mSv a year to have even the slightest statistically detectable health effect and far more than that to actually kill someone.

Please site your sources for this information.
I'm assuming they mean the estimated radiation from a properly functioning nuclear power plant and not the average actual radiation, which includes meltdowns, leaks, transportation accidents, etc. I can't imagine any geothermal plant ever contaminating like Chernobyl or Fukushima did.

It bears noting that coal ash is apparently 3-6 more radioactive than properly functioning nuclear power plants emit for the same energy generation, and it gets absorbed both directly from particles and indirectly in food and water.

Terminator: Dark Fate - Official Trailer (2019) - Paramount

Well... the cliché is as old as cinema, true, BUT, if there's THE one female badass that truly would behave as such IRL, it would be Post-T2 Sarah Connor, isn't it? Both character (Sarah) AND actress (Linda Hamilton) EARNED the "calmly walk away from explosions" shtick in my book.

The All-time Greatest On-Screen Female Badass #1 & #2 gotta be between Sarah Connor or Ripley from Alien. For me I'd pick Sarah as #1. My jaw dropped so hard seeing the changes of Hamilton from T1 to T2. Freaking amazing.

Sarah Calmer? Wha...?

OK, the calm walking away from large explosions is getting really old.

I'd even bet there is a close up shot of a foot stepping out onto the ground from a car too. Haven't seen that compilation yet.

Mother and Son Witness Tornado Touching Down

bremnet says...

I've been in every type of winter storm you can name (from Canada eh!), sandstorms in Saudi, monsoons in Thailand, typhoons in the Philippines, several wet seasons in northern Australia, and a fair few hurricanes here in Texas. But tornadoes - the tricky unpredictable bastards that you can't predict, plan for or gear up for, Mother Nature's switch blade, are the only things out there that freak me out.

"Holy shit, this is crazy" is the right response.

Tailgater Climbs The Ladder Of Success

AeroMechanical says...

I see a lot of fail to go around in this video. Naturally, the biggest failure is on the part of the driver who failed to secure their cargo. that is grievous and inexcusable negligence (assuming it wasn't the result of freak equipment failure like a strap breaking).

I don't like all the cars swerving out of their lane to avoid the ladder. Can't really say for certain from the video how aware they were of surrounding traffic and distances involved, but that is usually the wrong response. Better to come to a complete stop in your lane if you have to. I'm pretty sure the tailgater wasn't aware of that pickup coming up on his left.

And of course the guy not leaving enough space when he had plenty of alternatives available. That guy and his like-minded buddies are the primary reason 40% of my commutes over the last two weeks have been an hour and a half instead of the 20 minutes they should be.

I think it must be the heat or something, but way too many people have been driving foolishly or like they're defending their position lately.

At least two second intervals. Let other drivers merge. Use the accelerator on the on ramp--you should be going the speed limit by the time you have to merge with traffic. We'd all get home quicker that way.

Ah, that's better. Thank you Videosift for the therapy session.

ant jokingly says...

Rough draft:

Welcome to my city
The girls are so damn pretty
Such a pity, they don't come for free

Just call me pimp daddy
I'll roll ya one big fatty
I think you're gonna like a hangin' with me

[Chorus]
Welcome to my city of sin
I believe you're gonna fit right in
Yes this is my city of sin
You're first lesson is about to begin
Now you're living in the city of sin
You don't mind if I call you friend
Once you enter you can never get out of here
Welcome to Hollyweird

I'm the king of the streets
I own the cops, the junkies and freaks
It's a human wasteland I call home

Grow your hair to your shoes
Trust me boy you just can't lose
Soon this be the only life you've ever known

[Chorus]

[Chorus out]

Actual racists only use these new symbols when the mainstream recoils in horror and labels the trolls incorrectly as racists instead of as trolls, or just ignoring them. I think many spreading the "it's ok to be white" slogan are trolls too. They enjoy seeing people freak out at a phrase that says nothing negative about anyone, but many people will read into it a hidden meaning. You can't discern intention in these cases, only assume based on your personal previous exposure. I seem to understand it as a response/analog to "black lives matter" which most people don't think secretly means white lives don't matter, and the posters think the disproportionate response is racial bias.

newtboy said:

I agree with not accepting their usurping common terms and gestures, but I cannot accept ignoring what them mean by them. Just because I don't mean anything racist when I use the OK hand symbol, I'm not going to pretend the white supremacist assholes flashing it behind the black sports announcer wasn't blatantly a racist move. Thankfully, neither are the stadium owners who banned those people for life.
Recognizing their racist intentions is not the same as condoning their racist usurpation of language. Ignoring their racist meaning and usage is condoning it. I will call them out when I think they're being racist, which these people undeniably are. "It's ok to be white" is a slogan used EXCLUSIVELY as a racist taunt, not a factual statement of equality.

Don't ignore racism in an effort to deny it power, that doesn't work....it only allows it to fester and grow. Bright sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Celebrities Freaking Out Over Meeting Other Celebrities

Payback says...

I take a look at celebrities and ask myself, "I can't stop a bullet buck naked, can they?" If the answer is no, then meh. If it's yes, then ok, I'd freak out.

So yes... the only person I'd freak out for is Chuck Norris.
