I didn't think it was possible, but looked it up (found this) and modern metal detectors can detect lead.
So there's really little reason the tournament judges weren't running a metal detector over every fish.
(a x-ray would be more definitive, but way more expensive and can't be battery powered)

The biggest wtf here is that they haven’t been checking these fish all this time?

They should be sued for every penny they’ve won ever, and every penny of sponsorship they received, triple that amount in punitive damages, then banned for life from any competition of any kind. I hope fishing contests were their livelihoods and they lose everything.

Yes, I had the same reaction. It made me really uncomfortable and during that part I decided not to post it, but the whole thing in retrospect changed my mind. OK, so it got away in the end, and fish are caught and subsequently killed like this every minute of the day, but it's not something I liked watching.

I suppose it does help us think about how bad we really are though.
