Understanding Comfortably Numb

shagen454 says...

Ah, the only track off The Wall I ever liked. It's always bothered me that early Floyd is killer and all of those junior high / high school The Wall worshippers (who did not listen to early Floyd) really put me off on the Floyd until I got into bands that I consider even better than Floyd - like Faust and CAN, and once my head was straight for real psychedelic music of the late 60's & early 70's - went back into the Floyd catalog and found out how great they were before The (fucking) Wall. Check out Live at Pompeii if you're a Floyd fan and never seen it.

Lol, it's okay Faust, there's lots of people like you who struggle to pay attention to things if they're not shiny or exciting enough for you. You get bonus points though for proving you were just pretending to have a normal 'ugh, man that guy's monotone voice' conversation when actually you were interested in attacking his character for political reasons. Well done.

The "Friendship is Magic" series is really well done. It's the brainchild of Lauren Faust, who was a writer and co-developer (with her husband) of the popular "Powerpuff Girls" series. The show manages to provide lots of moral lessons (like how to constructively deal with major disappointments, self-esteem issues, conflict with friends, etc.) that are directly relevant to young girls without ever becoming preachy. It's one of those shows that occasionally contains pop-culture references that may fly over the head of your child but will make you as a parent chuckle. My 4-year old daughter loves it--she specifically requested a Rainbow Dash plush for Christmas and we were happy to give it to her because we really appreciate the care that goes into the cartoon to help young girls develop positive self-images.

Frankly, there's lots of good quality animations for kids these days that are enjoyable for adults to watch as well. We love to watch Peppa Pig, Octonauts, Paw Patrol, Doc McStuffins--even Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse (which contains a surprising number of Star Wars references).

I expect that I'm a potential-Brony. Pre-brony? I don't know. All I do know is that I haven't had time to watch it yet, but every single thing I see and hear about this show virtually guarantees I'll be a fan once I do. They nailed a sweet spot with the art and animation, and that ridiculously saccharine-sweet tone is just the right kind of self-parody and legitimate cuteness that only comes along once in a while.

Prog Rock Britannia an Observation in Three Movements

I love King Crimson but out of all the prog rock bands my favorite was Henry Cow. They were an experimental prog band from the mid seventies, highly anti capitalist and took me a long time to get into. Like most awesome shit, My favorite prog song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=374qf7xCFkY , Beautiful as the Moon - Terrible as an Army with Banners . A couple of members were in Slapp Happy that Faust played in, in the early seventies. Fred Frith in the late seventies left Henry Cow and put out a really amazing experimental prog album called Gravity.

And you know, I think this might be breakout - black hipsterdom meets pop success. I mean I'm only a white guy but I feel like I can chart artistic white man's black man's underground hip hop in pretty inaccurate accurate way. I feel like a lot started with Kool Keith aka Jupiter, aka Automator 5, aka Dr Octogon... underground and innovative enough to have been on a "power-violence" record by the legendary and far more underground band Spazz, or a group like dalek that had a record with 70's innovative german band Faust which eventually ended up influencing pretty innovative labels like the now defunct Definitive Jux. A lot of this stuff is and was influenced by punk. And I'm not talking Ramones, etc.

These guys are like a white hipster savvy Onyx; but I really do like it and just like the now popular Das Racist you hear references to noise punk / hardcore classics. That is the new hip hop.

yeah seriously. I'm now almost 30, still a huge music nerd. One of the only bands I have ever really disliked is Phish. To this day I think Phish are one of the worst bands ever. Nuff said, hippies (and this coming from someone that listens to Syd Barrett, Parson Sound, Faust, Can and all sorts of weird... "hippy" stuff, but still dislike Grateful Dead as well.)

A huge influence to many ; but in rock music he is fairly popular for influencing the krautrock movement of Germany in the early 70's such as Can, Amon Duul II and possibly most important of all, Faust.
