Evil Dead was fun.

Bear in mind that you can't really compare it to the next generation like Nightmare on Elm St, Poltergeist etc. since they're already moving away from the straight-up slasher - more complex plots, adding mainstream elements like humour, and far bigger budgets.

The comparison to Halloween is reasonable since it really was a Halloween wannabe, but it's a bit like saying you're not as smart as Einstein.

Now, if you really want to diss the film, compare it to Evil Dead which came out only a year later on a smaller budget.

maybe it's just this trailer, but seems this one is taking a dramatic departure from the other Evil Dead movies' tone.

Hilarious, kind of like Duke Nukem using lines from Evil Dead and They Live.

embarassingly, I'm kind of intrigued; I think it has a Texas Chainsaw Massacre / Evil Dead quality about it

I was also thinking during the preview that it was pretty amazing that they killed off Danny Trejo so quickly and later came to the conclusion that it's probably because they couldn't afford the budget and that's Danny Trejo money which probably isn't alot compared to say Tom Hanks.

Uhh, that was the point of Evil Dead II.

He (Raimi) did a super-low budget film with his friends and found big cult success, a film studio wanted to capitalize, but thought the production values were too low, so paid them to re-shoot the whole thing.

No lack of creativity to blame there.

Finally, a decent looking movie that's actually an original story.
Oddly ironic that it comes from the people who made Evil Dead and Evil Dead2, which were almost shot for shot the same movie.
