Imo, rail guns and gravity couches are far more feasible and that technology does exist today. I hope we develop something before the Kessler syndrome (when space junk in orbit is so prevalent it's impossible to avoid and constantly increasing, like in "Gravity") makes orbiting or leaving earth impossible.
