How A Brick & Rock Battery Is Changing Energy Storage

spawnflagger says...

yeah, since efficiency is usually a measure of how much energy is lost to heat, should be 0% vs 100%... but, marketing.

I also doubt they are using aerogel or cryostats insulation to surround hot bricks. (or maybe that's why 1 container costs $9M?)

Matt (and team) from Undecided almost never approach their videos with a critical eye. Many startups' claims can be debunked with high school physics, but they just present everything as-is and with good production value. I consider their channel more entertainment than education, but still interesting to see some of the ideas out there.

Ok. I like the concept….thermal mass as short term heat storage/release is a well established science.

Sadly calling bullshit when they claim converting electricity to heat is 100% efficient. Nothing is 100% efficient.
They also claim 98% efficiency “pulling the heat back out”…unbelievably high.
Noticeably missing were heat loss rates, both for capture and storage over time…both expected to be extremely high at temperatures of 1500C.

The second system boasting 80% efficiency (but why burning wood?) is more realistic, but the only 3% heat loss per day at 500C temperatures claim is not. No insulation I’ve ever heard of is that efficient.

Recycling industrial manufacturing heat seems smart, but I think they need to be honest up front about the real world expectations and uses. If it could cut the energy needed to bake limestone or melt steel in half, that’s great…please don’t imply it could cut it by anything approaching 97%. That makes me not trust it at all.

Dumbest Criminals On Earth

He should stick to his day job and leave entertainment and sarcasm to the professionals. Must be a slow day at the slammer.

OK, so it sounds like the criminals are pretty dumb, but man that cop is a dick.

Beauty Contestant Shocked By Microphone

Buttle says...

Notice what actually does happen -- she can't let go. The muscles closing your hand are much stronger than the ones opening, and they're both contracting as hard as they can. Something to think about if you need to drag someone away from an electric shock.

Seems like this could have made cartoons nearly as entertaining, while also informing.

Yes, but I was a little disappointed that her skeleton didn't show through her body like our cartoons lead us to believe.

RiffTrax: Halloween Supercut!

moonsammy says...

I find Rifftrax works much better as full episodes than as clips, unfortunately. Much like MST3K (understandably), a lot of the jokes are recurring gags or callbacks. I tend to laugh my ass off while watching full episodes (*IF* I actually pay attention instead of using it as background entertainment), while clips only occasionally work out of context. There are a few good ones in here, but mostly it makes me want to go back and re-watch the Manos episode of MST3K...

What if Akira Was Animated At 60 Frames Per Second

cloudballoon says...

I can tell the changes in the animation, but it doesn't improve a thing about Akira, and needn't be. I upvote because of Akira, not 60fps (as pointless as the CGI added Star Wars Ep IV-VI... and I'm being charitable). Akira is something that every generation needs to be aware of and watch.

Also, if you have access to it, read the comics (manga). While I wouldn't say it's more entertaining than the movie, it's far more intriguing. Same deal with many of the Studio Ghibli adaptations (like Valley of the Wind). Go for the comics, you'll get more of an emotional rollercoaster ride than the visually amazing, but plot-weakened film versions.

so it would have tripled the cost and made it look worse.

people's obsession with 60+ FPS needs to stop. it looks bad and it's a shit-ton of work. its purpose is to sell more TVs. same with 8K+. even 4K is pretty overkill for most people's viewing habits.

"The Rarest Milkweed in Texas" is very entertaining too.

Stumbled upon this video some time back. The voice, vernacular, and presentation were not what was expected in a 'nature' video.

(also like his brief assessment of the southern wall proposal)

good stuff.

Maddow on Josh Hawley running from the mob on Jan 6th

noims says...

For those of you who enjoyed the clip itself, here are a few remixes of it set to various soundtracks: https://nitter.net/The_Mal_Gallery/status/1550289866411634689 (or https://twitter.com/The_Mal_Gallery/status/1550289866411634689 if you prefer)

Also, this was the immediate reaction when this was shown by the Jan 6th committee: https://nitter.net/dprzygoda/status/1550287028029476866#m

Yes, these entertained me enough to find an appropriate video to post and write this comment for.

STOP posting this fool's videos!

He is the definition of an ultracrepidarian!

He is not funny or informative or entertaining or enlightening or worthy of regard. The only example being displayed is your neophobia.

The only people merited to SUFFER through this level of smug inaneness would be a doctor, lawyer, priest, therapist - - people paid to listen to troubled souls.*

There isn't enough Flavor Ade to make him believable.

(add'n background banjo music to those videos would only improve it)

Irish Politician Mick Wallace on the United States

noims says...

There are a couple of Irish EU Parliamentarians that act the wise fool - the court jester that is allowed to speak truth to power in the guise of eccentricity.

It's similar to the way the best real American commentaries on politics come from comedians, because the information comes packaged in entertainment, rather than much of the press who are forced to pick one or the other.
