Rare Daytime Fireball Seen Over Texas

cosmovitelli says...

What!
Oh yeah April's fireball season everyone knows that!

Funny how NO other astronomical phenomena outside of the earth-moon system is synchronised to the earth's rotation around the sun..

That would require a static patch of asteroids to hold position relative to the sun for us to pass thru every solar cycle at the same time.. And to enter the atmosphere over the Americas every year.. And where's last years clip..

Not saying its not possible but these idiots seem rather keen to accept this astonishing explanation..

^ Interesting, I didn't know that so I looked it up.

In summary:

  • Earth's rotation is being slowed by the friction between the oceans and the ocean floor
  • This will continue until (in a few billion years) Earth's tidal bulges align with an imaginary line running through the center of the Earth/Moon system
  • Earth's rotation will then cease slowing down.
  • when it does happen: Earth's day will be a month long (960 hours a day) and our month will be forty days long
  • those on the Moon looking back at Earth would see the same face of Earth – just as now we see only one face of the Moon.
  • to anyone still on Earth, the Moon will have moved far enough away that it appears much smaller
  • there would be no more solar eclipses

    Ms.Information says...

There is another, fairly obvious, effect of having such an enourmous moon. (The Earth-Moon system is sometimes, incorrectly, being described as a double planet system, as our moon is so big.)
It provides light. Granted, not by itself, but still it lights the dark side of the earth often enough for nocturnal animals to evolve. Without it all animals except bats and stuff would spend the dark (and stormy) nights sleeping. With it you can evolve a reflective surface in your eye and hunt. That can in time lead to a more complex ecosystem and more complex forms of life. Like us, for example.
