Ron Paul & Ralph Nader: A Libertarian-Progressive Alliance?

VoodooV says...

Maybe Federal govt offers competitive pay. But I can say from experience that State does not.

You can't have efficient gov't when you constantly piss on gov't employees because of the "taxation is theft," or the "I pay your paycheck" mentality. small government is not efficient government. EFFICIENT government is efficient government. size has nothing to do with it.

I'm sorry if you haven't had a good experience with the DMV or Post Office, but i don't think im going out on a limb when I say that your experience is the exception, not the rule. The system does work. I really hope I don't have to argue why the DMV and Post Office are necessary. If there is a problem, it starts at the top, not the bottom. Either an employee needs to be disciplined or retrained, regardless, a supervisor or manager at the top is responsible. The fish rots from the head as saying goes.

When you have a problem with the system, you don't throw out the system, you fix the system. And again, it starts at the top. Quite honestly, I think it starts with election reform. We are in this ridiculous perpetual election cycle. As soon as someone wins election, they're already worried about the next one instead of actually doing their job for which they were elected.

My own personal opinion is that the appointee system needs to go, it just encourages crony-ism. Again speaking from personal experience, every time we get a new governor, The governor appoints a whole new set of commissioners for purely political reasons. These new commissioners, in turn, remake their agencies in their own image, re-making things that are perfectly fine, re-doing logos, redoing floor plans, meanwhile nothing actually meaningful changes. Then it all just repeats when a different governor is elected and time and money are wasted.

Just to summarize, but government isn't the problem, it's just that there is a huge shortage of people who actually want to do their job. That's the problem with any business, public or private. The only difference is that gov't is controlled by a bunch of armchair quarterbacks who too busy looking for their next job instead of doing their current one.

Ron Paul & Ralph Nader: A Libertarian-Progressive Alliance?

@VoodooV, not sure I understand why introducing competing currencies would "border on lunacy"? There are compelling arguments in favor of a value backed currency. And being a veteran I would disagree about the health care being "excellent". Adequate, certainly, but I still choose private doctors for all my health care needs.

And government does offer competitive pay. A lot of times better than the private sector. I'd prefer competitive services versus a 'one-size-fits-all' service offered by the government, to be honest. Choice is better than one option any day, and because the government is subsidized by tax dollars they can be unfairly competitive in any industry without having to worry about customer service or market cues.

The DMV and Post Office come to mind. I've never had a pleasant experience at the DMV, but it doesn't matter because I can't refuse to do business with them. And that goes for the US Post Office, because they've got a monopoly on first class mail. If I don't like that the postman bends and crams my mail into my mailbox like he has a personal vendetta against it, I have to suck it up because they're the only first class mail service.

All the very best fails of 2010!

The Big Bang Theory - Concerns at the DMV

Elderly woman drives Buick wagon the wrong way down I-95.

It probably doesn't help that at the DMV/BMV I see people going for the eye test and the the worker giving every chance to see the blinking light... "Do you see a blinking light on the right hand side?" "Oh... yeah..." Meanwhile you saw them press the button to make a light blink half a minute ago.
It looks like she was in the breakdown lane and probably thought it was the lane for the opposite direction. I would think the concrete divider may have been a clue that was the wrong thought though.

NetRunner says...

@blankfist well, would you support raising the gasoline tax to cover any of those things, then?

The "make it cheaper to operate a car in a highly-congested area" was about the $400 registration fee. It's that high, because there are more people who want to drive in LA than the roads can handle. Market forces indicate that when demand exceeds supply, price should increase, but since people are usually opposed to congestion charges, it shows up as a high registration fee in metro areas. It's $40 for me in Franklin county, but compared to LA we're practically rural.

The DMV here is, for no good reason, the BMV. BMV's across the city vary -- the one closest to OSU campus is pretty god awful, but the one where I live these days is quick, efficient, and friendly. Mostly though, I don't even go in there because I can order new tags online (https://www.oplates.com/) or by mail, and I usually do that.

As for court costs, I'm not so sure raising those to meet the demand so no one waits is a good idea. It creates a civil liberties issue in line with poll taxes. You're ultimately discouraging poor people from being able to get their day in court.

@NetRunner. Gasoline tax was designed to pay for the roads, so that pretty much negates everything you said. Even if we believe fines are necessary to keep drivers from parking inappropriately, do they have to be so steep? And shouldn't the registration costs really only cover the cost of processing and the sticker?

Courts should be paid for by court costs. Seems fair. It's not like the local government of Los Angeles isn't raking in billions from the tax payers.

Also, apparently the DMV was privatized in either SC or NC, and I hear the wait times are minutes. How's the DMV in Ohio? It sucks ass out here.

Not sure what you mean by "make it cheaper to operate a car in a highly-congested area".

Singing Dog Man Loves Jesus

shuac says...

Come on, you make it sound like singing dog men are NOT supposed to love Jesus! Every singing dog man I've ever met certainly loved Jesus. Way more than a bone. In fact, I saw a singing dog man the other day at the DMV and everyone was like, "Well of course, it's the singing dog man singing about loving Jesus." And everyone in the queue wanted their license picture taken by the singing dog man! He worked there or was that not understood?

Roundabout Driver Fail

What is a Libertarian?

ButterflyKisses says...

Geeez, I typed up a huge response only to have videosift refresh the page to lose it all, thanks videosift.
Anyway, here goes one more time...

You have the audacity to be so ignorant as to claim that an entire group of a wide variety of people are all unashamed and selfish - all the while I've met several democrats and republicans whom are unashamed and self-righteous people (not all of course), but I wouldn't be so blatantly ignorant as to group the entire lot as such.
People of all walks of life end up being in the middle politically because they realize the partisan bullshit of a two party system that is both corrupt to the core (politically) and constantly lying to us to get elected and/or remain in office.

Many libertarians share common values with those on the right and left. Not all libertarians believe in a completely open free-market society. Many of us like myself demands a regulated market. There will always be some issues that you may disagree with or feel a little differently about no matter what party you are in.

Civil rights, sound monetary policy, limited international intervention and proper checks and balances in a small federal government sounds like the most logical I've heard of out of all the parties available. I don't agree with the abortion issue because I'm non-religious and I feel a woman should have the right to choose, yet this should be highly regulated and it shouldn't be a federal issue, but one for the states individually to decide.

Now, to answer your questions (again):
1.) "if you are not rich and your road gets a pot hole in it, who fixes it?"
Ans: That would be the STATE taxpayer funded infrastructure dept. (i.e.: Caltrans, DMV)
I have no problem paying state taxes so long as the funds are not abused, used up in bureaucracy, paying extravagant salaries to executive, lost via corruption, etc.) The income tax goes only to pay for interest the national deficit (thanks to fractional-reserve fiat banking and systematic removal of the gold standard).

2.) "if you are not rich and your house catches on fire, who puts it out?"
Ans: That also is the STATE taxpayer funded Fire and Rescue departments.

3.) " if you are not rich and someone tries to kill you, who stops them?"
Ans: That also is a STATE taxpayer funded Law Enforcement division.
Note: The FBI is a great Federal law enforcement agency (when not hampered by bureaucracy, politics and corruption). This being said I feel some federal taxes are fine. One third of my pay is gross taxation though and it's gotten a bit out of hand thanks to bankers and corrupt politicians creating and controlling economic policy.

4.) " if you are not rich and your kid gets very sick, who heals them?"
Ans: Usually myself because I am not rich. If I have to take them in, then my kids get healed from the doctor I have from my medical plan that I and my company pays into. The federal or state govt. has not assisted with me on this!

It seems you need to rethink a few things here. You don't seem to really understand the general Libertarian philosophy. People tend to mock what they don't understand or they have an agenda for their own party of trying to stamp out competition (an ambitious form of monopoly over the lives which they try to influence).

>> ^daxgaz:

the party of of the unashamed selfish. I've debated several libertarians in the past. when you get right down to it they don't care about anyone but themselves. the irony is, the ones i talked to were not in the upper 2% of the wealthiest of the population and would therefore be enslaved by their own cause. If you want to get down to it with one of them, ask them a few of the following questions:
if you are not rich and your road gets a pot hole in it, who fixes it?
if you are not rich and your house catches on fire, who puts it out?
if you are not rich and someone tries to kill you, who stops them?
if you are not rich and your kid gets very sick, who heals them?
the answer to all of these questions from a pure libertarian is "screw you. take care of yourself."
They are the party that most supports corporations controlling the entire society, though they don't often talk about it directly. It's a free country, right? if wal-mart makes enough money to buy run out all the competition and have a monopoly over the lives of every person on earth for their own profit, then good for them.
i really hate the libertarian philosophy.

Woman Gets OMOHON License Plate, DMV Wakes Up Late

Why shouldn't she be allowed to write whatever she wants? You don't address that anywhere in this stack of strawmen and ad hominem fallacies you've posted.
Just because she's a moron and a bigot doesn't mean she should be silenced.

Dipshits pulling out 'free speech' to try to suggest they can write anything they want.
Would she be happy with a license plate that said 'CUNT', or one that said 'JCSUX' or one that said 'ANALRX'?
I would doubt it, she would say they're obscene, and yet she thinks she's allowed to have hateful stuff as her license plate. Well, you know what, it's a fucking license plate, the DMV get to decide what is and isn't allowed on them... if she wants to have anti homosexual shit on her car, let her make a fucking sticker and put it on there.
People like this are disgusting hypocrites who are the first to go apeshit if there is ANY sign that's anti Jesus... but don't dare suggest they can't say they hate fags, god no... that's their fucking right.

Um... I said she can have bumper stickers to her hearts content. Because it's a LICENSE plate she DOES NOT have the right to have it say whatever she wants.

That's the beginning and end of it, the State doesn't want that as one of their license plates... THE END.
