America's Test Kitchen covered sangria -- here's an excerpt

Many people mistake sangria for an unruly collection of fruit awash in a sea of overly sweetened red wine. There's also the premade sangria sold in liquor stores, which is at once sugary, watery, and flavorless--a poor substitute for Hi-C.
The Goal

A robust, sweet-tart punch.
The Solution

Start with cheap red wine, which actually makes a better sangria than the expensive stuff. (Experts told us that the sugar and fruit called for in sangria throw off the balance of any wine used, so why spend a lot on something that was carefully crafted?)We experimented with untold varieties of fruit to put in our sangria and finally concluded that simpler is better. We preferred the straightforward tang of citrus in the form of oranges and lemons. And we discovered that the zest and pith as well as the fruit itself make an important contribution to flavor. Orange liqueur is standard in recipes for sangria, and after experimenting we found that here, as with the wine, cheaper was just fine, this time in the form of Triple Sec. Fortification with any other alcoholic beverage, from gin to port to brandy, simply gave the punch too much punch. What we wanted, and what we now had, was a light, refreshing, very drinkable drink.

Here's the recipe -- http://www.recipezaar.com/The-Best-Sangria-64855 . I haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list

At 1:02 "OK, I'm gonna put you outside."

She was probably just saying that for the camera. What really happened was she turned off the camera, slipped off one of her shoes, and proceeded to rain blows down upon the vermin, leaving only a furry and bloody heel print on the counter top, which was quickly disposed of with a citrus scented disinfecting wipe.

...while listening to Whitney Huston, or possibly Genesis, I would imagine.

Well, I'm 50, and I have to see, I've seen about 4 orders of magnitudes more nipple rings than citrus with body jewelry. So it isn't exactly a fair test. Not so much reason to use captive bead on your fruit. Unless your fruit's name is Dwayne.

VideoSift v3.1 Unveiled (Sift Talk Post)

Doc_M says...

Image posting in such a large "community" is a bad idea. Ask anyone who has been tricked into witnessing a certain "citrus festivity" let's call it... Image posts are too easy to abuse and as they say, "what has been seen cannot be unseen."
Anyway, it'd be annoying and would clutter everything up. I have a HUGE collection of goofy forum-pictures, and I might on occasion feel the urge to rain them down upon thee in torrents.

And after a few days now, the shorter queue time is... less unattractive than I'd first thought.

I don't really have a vast exposure to shoegaze, though I like Asobi Seksu and Ides of Space. Most of the shoegaze I've heard has bored me due to the melodies being almost impossible to hear and the vocals being totally buried. If you drown out everything that makes a song interesting with the chord progression, that's really all you end up with lol. I've never heard of those other groups you mentioned, but I haven't really checked out Europe's music scene. I mainly listen to American and Japanese rock/indies.

Oh, that song you linked was quite good, btw.

Yeah, I don't get all that much out of Loveless either. And yeah, I'd mark Citrus as the best shoegaze album of all time, too. If you're into the poppier side of shoegaze, I hope you're also into bands like The Radio Dept, Mixtapes and Cellmates, etc. Basically everything out of Sweden. I'm gonna guess you haven't heard this song, but it'll crush you (crank it up high):

Everybody's got their own favorites, I suppose. I love the hook at the end of the verse, the dual vocals in the chorus, and the lyrics a lot. There's a lot of really, really good songs like this one on that album though. They're really at the poppy end of shoegaze, but Citrus has to be my favorite shoegaze album ever. (Yeah I know Loveless is amazing and highly-rated, but it's just not as addictive, imo.)

In reply to this comment by charlatantric:
Really? I've always considered this to be one of the more mediocre songs (save the instrumental hook towards the end). I've been a total fanboy since Asobi Seksu quoted me in their press release for this album

The Second Roast on Monday! (Parody Talk Post)

choggie says...

There you have it, these questions were extrapolated from a conversation (one-way) b/t myself and dotdude.....I proposed while looking over the ideas (stream of consciousness) that we simply number them and throw them at Mycroft-Linear thinker that he his, he treated it like a pop quiz, and quickly returned to his data crunching.

The trick question between 5 and 6, since there is no such citrus condition, mans you would not squeeze a lemon so hard that it would shoot juice errantly into someone's eye, that's good to know.

Don't know what yer missin',bird-fish tacos are special things...and I thought I was the only one that never regretted ordering the Chairstand, it doubles as a party harness, I love mine....

As for Faust?? Neither the 16th century alchemist, Johann Georg Faust, nor Goethe's tragic poodle-devil follower, wrote anything of note....Guess when you talk to mister literal, you better mean just what you say.

Ok, so I know the roast starts tomorrow, so I'll give Jurassic momma's boy, some room to wiggle and sweat.

Asobi Seksu - Thursday

JAPR says...

Good god, how did I miss this? I love Asobi Seksu (the band, I mean ;3). They're technically not a Japanese band as they're based in New York, but the vocalist is Japanese.

I'd definitely recommend checking out the album Citrus to anybody that hasn't yet, it's a freaking amazing CD.

Murtha discusses Iraq Accountability Act

Wumpus says...

"Anyone find it ironic or a little bit Orwellian that Dems are begging Republicans for another $124 BILLION in war funding??"

It's not the war funding they're asking for. What Murtha is not telling you is that this bill is loaded to the brim with pork and pet projects such as:

-- $25 million for payments to spinach producers
-- $120 million to the shrimp industry
-- $74 million for peanut storage
-- $5 million for shellfish, oyster and clam producers
-- $24 million to sugar beet producers
-- $283 million for the Milk Income Loss Contract program
-- $120 million to compensate for the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the shrimp and menhaden fishing industries
-- $100 million for citrus assistance
-- last but not least...A minimum wage increase

And that's the short list. None of these have anything to do with the war, but they have everything to do politicians getting local projects passed that they couldn't get through otherwise to please their constituents. It's not about the war, it's about getting reelected.
