GameSoundCon 2010: "Introduction to Game Audio"

artician says...

Oh! And of course: Demoscene!

Demoscene is similar to chiptunes, but spawned about a decade (?) before the NES really popularized game tunes, and came out of Europe's, uh, "demo scene" (computer programming demos usually focused around visuals with accompanying soundtracks).
If you're ever into that kind of thing, I can recommend Nectarine Radio (scenemusic.net), though they occasionally drift into euro-crap disco-pop, they're essentially a searchable/playable database of the history of European (primarily) computer game soundtracks and demo music. Also a very strange, unique genre that shares a significant amount with the game medium!

David Hasselhoff - True Survivor

kir_mokum says...

the video effect is bad chromatic aberration which is an artifact of a bad lens. it's standard for movies and TV shows with no budget. blood dragon was just drawing from the same influences (80s-early 90s action/fantasy movies/TV, foreign action fantasy movies, taiwanese movies, hong kong movies, telugu movies, possibly nigerian movies) and the underground popularity of synthwave, chillwave, even italodisco, and chiptune. kung fury could have pull some influence from blood dragon but both are based on 30 year old cliches so that influence is a bit meaningless since the source material is so redily available.

This is a bit more specific than just general 80s kitch. Even the video effect was very Blood Dragon, along with the dude riding a dinosaur

Alphabetical 26-Genre Song

cricket says...

Lyrics:

oh my god!

my bleeding heart bleeds blood for you, woah, woah

traveling down this lonely road, woah

facing my hurt, hurting my face, yeah yeah yeah

i chainsaw your face off, watching your brains rotting, kid
drain your veins raw, straining your esophagus

위하여, 음악에 미친 널 [we-hah-yeo, umage michin null]
위하여, 술잔에 비친 널 [we-hah-yeo suljane bichin null]
[translation: "cheers to you who are crazy for the music! / cheers to you who are reflected on the (wine) glass!"]

finding the truth
take it back
finding the truth
it's nothing
change
and tesselate
as we fight to the death

il mio amore è corrisposto

we all dance to the polka
for it is so fun
still dancing to the polka
with my accordion

love is everywhere
smoke is in the air

pick it up, pick it up!
oi! oi! oi! oi!
pick it up, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up!
oi! oi! oi! oi!

a to z, z, z
a to z, z, z
a to z

as we cross the open seas
twoards the call of war
our axes we'll free
guided by the hand of thor

yeah yeah yeah
and our love will never end

Designing a Transformer

artician jokingly says...

Exec #1: "So, this promo video is almost done. We need something edgy though. Something that speaks to the kids and kids-at-heart. What are they into today?"

Exec #2: "There's that one sound... Old video game music. Chiptunes! That's it!"

Exec #1: "That's that really annoying, scratchy music isn't it? Doesn't every single media source rely on that now?"

Exec #2: "We can push it further. You know... make it even edgier. It's supposed to be annoying, right? Let's use hard core chiptunes. Something so annoying it's like nails on a chalkboard! They will LOVE that!"

Exec #1: "DO IT!"

The Pixies "Where Is My Mind?" - 8 bit edition

christopher_voss says...

I appreciate all of the kind words. As the artist I feel I needed to address what the point of this work was... Fight Club came out during my Junior year in high school. I had never really heard the Pixies before that point. I fell in love with the song and listened to it several hundreds of times over. I also happen to love chiptune and ran impulse tracker from an old 486 that I had had since the 9th grade. Put two and two together, and this was the result. There is a built in function in DosBox to record the screen (ctrl+alt+f5). During playback in record mode all samples/intruments are reduced to 8-bit. Channel constraints are not present in the strictest of settings for "true" 8bit. Who cares? Deal with it. Again, thanks for the kind words. You can check out my other words at: .

High School Grad Builds 8-bit Computer From Scratch

Croccydile says...

This reminds me of a ZX-81 (also cheap PC CGA cards) with the screen snow/flicker in order to save on cost and complexity. Cool stuff that I wish I could really do

Really good chiptune music to go with it as well

This sort of architecture was also not unusual in the commercial world as well. There were several computers with TTL CPUs as well as a few arcade (Cinematronics) games.
