Snaggletoothed Libertarian Opines

blankfist says...

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:
I see no need for the government to open a chain of themed restaurants, or to launch a line of cosmetics, however, I am pleased that we have civic solutions for problems that the private sector is ill-equipped to deal with, such as education, highway systems, court/legal systems, police, military, utilities, healthcare, etc.

Who says the private sector is ill-equipped to handle those things? We already have arbitration, so obviously we know privatized courts is a possible option. Privatized roads? Have you been to Disneyland? Damn, them some good roads, bub. Possibly the best I've ever seen.

And the education I got in my public school was shameful. Private education doesn't have to mean McDonalds creates educational franchises. It would be a great thing for communities to have multiple options for private schooling without having to conform to a terrible homogenized public school curriculum.

And why couldn't private healthcare (not corporate healthcare, which is what we have now thanks to government legislation passed in favor of them) be a wonderful thing. Imagine all the good that can be done if you could go see a nurse directly for simple medical treatment instead of going to the doctor's office? Nurses could treat a lot of ailments without the absorbent overhead of a licensed doctor you rarely see for longer than three minutes per trip. Or imagine if you didn't need a prescription for medicine you know you already need? Or imagine if we allowed prescription drug imports without the FDA?! Imagine the savings!

I'm not saying I'm for privatizing everything, at least not open to the idea of doing it overnight, but it's possible. And if you have private options without the government sticking their hands up your back, you could have way better and more affordable options.

Sure, but that does not mean you can automatically assume there is no flaw in your rationale for thinking god does not exist. I was referring to the type of atheist that dont even bother to check if their argument makes sense. They are just atheist for so and so reason, don't even know the history of atheism, etc. The same way a believer claims certainty and they dont even bother to read the bible.

I dont know, to me it feels like atheists dont really need an argument. They are simply not convinced by the arguments of the religious people... Again, the burden of proving something is on the religious people.
Like say someone came to you and said "Santa Claus is real". I dont see how you would suddenly need to prove that he is not real (it would seem impossible). And you dont need to know the history of people who deny Santa is real, you would just need some kind of proof that he is real before you believe it.
Maybe I missed your point.

Yeah, the burden of proof is definitely on them. They are claiming a supernatural being exists, and a whole another range of moral issues, and views of reality come behind it. A lot of conclusions covering everything, and not many reasonable answers.

But santa claus existence does not really affect the way you see reality, and ethics, and yourself. And if you dont buy the bible, they should be able to back it up with proof. But what religion tries to answer is the question of whether something of maximal perfection is out there. if you say you don't think that is the case because you don't buy what the bible is saying, what you are really saying is that you dont believe in the way Christianity is trying to answer that question. But the question can be studied separately from those religious views. And some people never try to while at the same time they claim absolute certainty.

Deregulation for Dummies - Rachel Maddow

qualm says...

ShakaUVM: "She comes off as a blithering idiot by claiming that all deregulation is bad, and that we should huzzah for more regulation ..."

ShakaUVM: "did you even listen to the clip?"

Of course. I listened to the clip again, before I posted, just to make sure I was correct.

Are you a Russian gymnast? Because that stretch of yours is amazing. Nice try though, bub. Please then locate for us where Maddow claims that "all deregulation is bad."

Republicans for Obama

Well I sifted it right from Obama's YouTube channel, so there you have something you can actually blame him for. Fixed it now.

I agree that Ron Paul would've been the right choice for President, better than Obama in my eye. Leave it to the Republicans to leave such an excellent and qualified candidate behind.

Republicans for Obama

quantumushroom says...

The good doctor really thinks a socialist is going to do what inept Republicans can't or won't do?

Wrong.

Dumbass Republicans that moonwalk towards socialism are still not socialists marching toward their delusions of glory.

The good doctor betrayed his core values--if he had any--for what he thinks will be quick fixes. He doesn't explain how he may have tried to help his own party; what right has he to complain that he was ignored? Maybe he tried once and became disillusioned because "change" wasn't instantaneous.

For now he's playing at being a country doctor. He needs a bureaucrat in his face, dictating what medical procedures he can and can't do, setting price controls for his services.

Ron Paul is a Republican, trying to change things from inside the tent. I don't agree with him 100%, but Paul is an example of how to go about things the right way, and how diverse the modern GOP is (by accident, not mandate). Paul isn't voting for McCain but he's not voting for ObamACORN, either.

Obama: "Bush Sr. Did Great Job in First Gulf War"

blankfist says...

>> ^kronosposeidon:
I'll upvote it, even though I believe the truth about the Gulf War is closer to what Crosswords described

We don't need your sympathy vote around here, bub! Kidding. We certainly accept all votes, sympathy or otherwise. But, enough about vote whoring, let's get back to the topic at hand.

>> ^kronosposeidon:
So did Bush the elder do an "excellent job" in the Gulf War? IMHO, no. However I don't think he did a terrible job either.

The real question should be "did we need to be there in the first place?" To which, I say no. So, if a president is willing to go abroad and fight wars they have no Constitutional right to fight, then I say they're a terrible president that hold your rights with about as much regard as they hold their wiener when they piss.
