Absolutely!! In the last years I’ve reread Beowulf and the Art Of War, and read Gilgamesh, The Water Margin/Heroes of the Marsh, a half dozen good books on Japanese tattoos, 2312, Artemis, two books of Viking mythology, and 3 books of Japanese horror/mythology….I would recommend all….so clearly they’re bad.

gosh...you're right...you are wrong.

A few more for your collection.

“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

And to reiterate what WOPR said, I think it was Master Po who said "The best way to dodge a punch, is to not be there."...or maybe it was Bruce Lee

It's Not Okay

newtboy says...

Ok....I hate to be this guy, but I must.

If @bobknight33 is honest about himself when we spoke privately, he's nowhere near the racist he appears to be. The sad thing is, his unthinking support of all things far/alt right, especially Trump, and hatred for anything left of that far right political position/trap makes him support racism and racists.
@Drachen_Jager, that's for your benefit as much as Bob's. “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” - master Sun Tzu- The Art Of War

@BSR, the video made clear why that, like the OK hand gesture, are racist. In a vacuum, you're correct, that statement is as true as all your other examples, but we don't live in a vacuum, and that slogan is purely racist and is intended to be just that. Bob would like us to all ignore that and think as you suggest...because that allows his racist brethren to spout their racism and claim morality and righteousness, but privately among the like minded, they're gleeful about cucking the libtards and getting away with public racism, shielded by the intentional misrepresentation of their meanings.

The Art of War

newtboy says...

WTF is this?
Not funny, just dumb.

But then, I've read the art of war and understand and respect the lessons it teaches.

Well, there we differ.

I don't engage anymore with people who are so passionate about their beliefs, they insult others. There is nothing I can say that will change them.

What was posted was just fine, just as it was.

Did you know that there are a disproportionate number of vegetarians in Britian? And there are a lot of them? So they have an interesting population to study.

I read somewhere that vegetarians, on average, have a higher IQ than the general population. Makes sense to me -- they read, they empathize, they question. That all takes intelligence.

It really doesn't matter to me if they "go too far." That is just passion. That is how change happens -- folks on the fringe pulling us sluggards in the middle out of our complacency.

I have more trouble the Sanders contingent than I do with vegans. Same dynamic -- they are passionate about their topic, and they don't differentiate between compromise and selling out, and if they keep this shit up, if Hillary gets the nomination, Trump might actually win.

Now THAT is over the top behavior that has real consequences.

Being passionate on the Sift is fine. If you don't like it, I honestly think it is better not to engage. Keeps your blood pressure down. Since trying to change their minds (on any passionately held topic) is fruitless, you are actually ahead.

You get low blood pressure!

(And I agree that we "should" have a mostly plant based diet. For a multitude of reasons -- health, the environment, limited resources, water usage, the list is pretty long before you even get to the abuse that animals in factory farms suffer. Do I have a plant based diet? No. Do I feel shame for not doing what is right? Yes. Am I going to change? No. "Should" I change? Yes. Do I enjoy the passionate and scolding posts made by friends on Facebook? No. Do I stop following them to "save" myself? No.

Instead of the Art of War, I am trying to practice the Art of Disengagement. Better for my health!)

We've gotten along in the past, so please allow me to enlighten you.
I downvoted him/her.
I DO have loved ones who are vegan for ethical/emotional reasons. They changed their diet after home butchering a lot of their livestock for a party, so I totally understand their reasoning. They, however, do not attack and insult others that don't feel the same way that they do, but this poster does, constantly.

Vegans, like any large group, run the gamut from smart, caring, and intelligent to stupid, self centered, and dumb. Please don't fool yourself into thinking they are all the same. They aren't.

I downvoted them because they repeatedly said (false) insulting things like "enslaved, tortured, confined and violently murdered for their pleasure, preferences and entertainment" about all meat eaters/producers. I take that as a number of intentional insults directed at anyone that has a different opinion or situation from them, painting >95% of people in the worst possible light, and using never ending ridiculous self serving emotional quotes to back up their insults (but never any actual fact).

I would note that this poster also makes absolutely no distinction between factory farms and free range, non abusive, caring farmers that practice humane farming and butchering and calls them all unthinking non-empathetic torturing murdering slave masters, along with all their customers. Every time someone perches on their high horse and makes such insanely overboard insulting blanket accusations (clearly based in ignorance) against nearly all humans, I'm going to downvote it....and I'm not alone in taking offence.

I have no problem with anyone being vegan. I don't have any problem with them talking about it and their experiences with it. I have a HUGE problem with anyone constantly insulting, lambasting, deriding, guilt tripping, and shaming all others that have made a different choice for their own varied and unknown (unknown to the guilt trippers) reasons.

Why I Support Julian Assange (Politics Talk Post)

chingalera says...

The charge of sexual impropriety reeks of an intelligence attempt at character assassination. I fear and despise the government here but the apathy is what scares me even more....Can;t stand to live around the masses who sould give a fiddler's fuck about anything but their entertainment-minus-information robot-think.

Assange fucked-up because he's fighting a machine whose governor has been removed from the flywheel...that machine embedded in the side of a granite mountain and thought information flowing freely would somehow wake a few peeps up to the gravity of its size, scope, players, etc. He's one dude, man. He should have figured that his life would be a pain in the ass after the first trickle fell from his tap. Now, he will remain most likely, vilified and estranged from participation in the game. Not a smart move...BOLD, but not to wise.

Then there's the matter of leaking information without the need-to-know to any and all-comers: Pretty shitty of you Julian, even though your intentions were seemingly noble. To departmentalize without permission well, back to the not-too-bright scenario....Dude?? Did you think that a bunch of "Talking loud and saying nothingers" having your back in internet forums could defeat or sway the masses who devour scat from the Monster Media?? Poor choice of battle plans mister, read Art o' War n try to get the gyst!!

Defector admits to WMD lies that triggered Iraq war

silky says...

It wouldn't have mattered at the time who justified the war for the US/UK. They wanted justification to make their war right. As was written about 1800 years ago:

"If you attack evils based on social trends, no one can rival your dignity. If you settle victory with the power of the people, no one can rival your achievement. If you can accurately discern these basis of action, and add dignity and faith to them, you can take on the most formidable opponent and prevail over the most valiant adversary" [Mastering the Art of War. Liang, Zhuge p71]

Unfortunately, they did not understand the true meaning of this. This passage isn't about justifying a war to ensure you win.

Middle School Football Trick Play

VoodooV says...

I don't really call that playing dirty. He gambled, played with their heads, and won. I'm pretty sure Sun Tzu has a line in The Art of War about not doing what the enemy expects you to do.

Thing is though, a play like that only works once.

Wikileaks - U.S. Apache killing civilians in Baghdad

Smugglarn says...

Seems like the soldiers weren't necessarily that green. They seem to be all to aware of the way their enemy operates. Hit and run and always coming back another day for another fight. The problem is multifaceted:

Technology
The cameras should clearly be in colour and much higher res. Fuck why not 3D?

ROE
Due to the nature of the insurgent and terrorist tactics the ROE have been made so lax that these kinds of incidents are avoided mainly through luck.

The Enemy
As previously noted the insurgents/terrorists use tactics that incorporate civilians to such a degree that they are virtually indistinguishable.

It is however wrong to see the warbands as anything close to a "liberation army" or an instance of "the people" rising up against oppression. The main conflict in Irak is a religious one - and a muslim one at that. However horrific this violent act is, it's peanuts compared to what "the Iraqi people" are doing to each other every day.

I'm with Netrunner - war is hell - avoid it. Don't they read "The Art of War" at West Point?

Rep. Alan Grayson Quotes Sun Tzu in light of Escalation

rougy says...

The Art of War.

I know you're being facetious, but I really must...set the record straight.

"America" is not addicted to war.

The war profiteers and the Pentagon pricks who kiss their ass, they are addicted to war.

Corruption, graft, apathy, greed, four worms that have rotted the wood of our Constitution.

Rep. Alan Grayson Quotes Sun Tzu in light of Escalation

kagenin says...

Great quote. Great message. Great lesson. Great Representative. Very poignant. "The Art of War" remains one of my very favorite philosophical texts, and I cannot think of a better quote for the situation we as a country were left in by the previous administration. Just replace "Feudal Lords" with "opposition party," and you have a very clear picture of what is actually going on in Washington.

Just think... what if Bush had given the order to overwhelm Tora Bora instead of just letting Bin Laden waltz out of his cave undisturbed? We had him cornered, but Bush let him walk free. There's no other way to spin the facts.

A hypothetical (Blog Entry by jwray)

my15minutes says...

^ true, but my previous post was based on an interesting hypothetical, conjured up by your closing bit, "The sheer propaganda value one gains by being on d..."
which is one of the things art of war was all about.

as in, if the US preempts pearl, your opening premise. due to japanese naval buildup, they freak, summer of '41, bomb tokyo bay or something.

well, there's your sheer propaganda value, right? maybe it's not just japan that thinks that was uncalled for, and sides with them. maybe a desire to kick our ass is what finally unites japan and china. russia chimes in, britain disowns us, canada and mexico start looking at us funny...
