Thunderf00t BUSTS the Hyperloop concept

nanrod says...

How do you know his mom is open to the air? My mom is in a plastic container waiting for us to scatter her remains in a sentimental location. Even if she was alive she would be one average target amongst 400 million. The WTC was one of a half dozen PRIME targets in the US on 9/11. The Hyperloop, on completion would become THE PRIME target in the US, not just for ISIS or Al Quaeda but for every nutjob who wanted to attract attention to himself. Hell, you'd probaly have rednecks out hunting taking potshots at it like it was a stop sign.

That being said, I'm still in favor of doing the research because even if Hyperloop never materializes, the research will inevitably have positive spinoffs. We should always dream big.

Not building something because someone can destroy it means constructing any building over 12-15 stories since 9/11 is ill-advised, yet people are still doing it...

And how does that serve your self-interest? If someone worse comes, that is?>> ^Yogi:

Cenk says the Obama administration doesn't torture...says who? The administration? How about using illegal drones to kill seemingly random targets who have no affiliation with Al Quaeda or "associated groups" and even when they get a target we just have to take their fucking word for it?
I've been off the Obama train for awhile, now I'm outright saying it. I'm not gonna vote for this man even if someone worse is coming. He's a fucking asshole, Fuck Him.

Chinese Youth Discuss what is Wrong with the USA

>> ^renatojj:

@Drachen_Jager, Uh... no? Somalia is very oppressed by criminal militias, that's a huge restriction to doing business, how do you suggest I secure private property and enforce contracts in that environment? A society that is not civilized, has no freedoms, including your precious freedom of speech.
You aren't taking this seriously, I'm a bit disappointed. Is this recession a joke to you?

You want someone to enforce contracts! But that's a restriction on business. So you DO think businesses should not be completely free to do as they please.

Those 'criminal gangs' as you call them are the paragons of free-market corporations. Give the same freedom to American corporations and they'll behave the same way.

I never promoted blanket freedom of speech either, even though you keep bringing it up. There is no total freedom of speech in any country, including the US.

All things in moderation. Extremism is the real danger, and believe me, you are as extremist as an Al Quaeda Imam in your own way.

Hitchens & Smerconish Debate Torture - Dec 17 2008

RedSky says...

Wow, that first spiel by Michael Smerconish has got to be some of the most reprehensible diatribe I have ever heard.

Is this shmuck not aware of rendition, does he really think that Guantanamo is the only incidence of US torture?

Does he really think that convicted high level Al Quaeda members were subjected to torture and not purely common, innocent people volunteered up for cash reward by tribal warlords in Afghanistan among many, many other wrongful detentions?

And geez, the sheer willingness he had to volunteer that he was all for tit-for-tat, everything goes interrogation is just unthinkable, didn't even have to back him into a corner to get him to spit that out.

Fucking wow.

I know what cyberterror is. I also know that supposedly the U.S. is engaged in hacking and shutting down Al-Quaeda websites. But that's not mentioned in this video, so I was wondering why you chose to include it in the w.o.t. channel.

I do give you props for your 007-ish "I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you"-style answer though.

Ehren Watada refuses to de deployed to Iraq

MINK says...

yeah, i am pretty sure war crimes go unpunished all the time, how are you supposed to put dead people in the witness box? yay twiddles...

@Arsenault185 re:
"BTW mink in regards to you last post, that very specifically talks about country governments, whereas Al-Q is not a government, there fore we cannot declare "war" on them."

EXACTLY. So what this is is not a war, it is a pillage. The word "Al-Quaeda" was made popular as a way to try to define these disparate terrorists as a coherent group, in order to make it more legitimate to prance around the world killing them in other people's countries. (or shooting innocent brazilians in the head, whichever)

I don't think the writers of the constitution, geneva conventions, or nuremburg judgements would class this invasion as a "legitimate war" ... that's why they are relevant here. Think spirit of the law, not letter. I am not suggesting they all have a clause saying "No invading sovereign nations for their natural resources".

again you felt the need to attack watada... this time he's called a "douchebag". The dude is obviously not just tryin to slack off here, i think it takes just as much courage to stand up to the entire united states military and argue points of law as it does to fight poor people who's oil you stole.

If he wins, and in future there is less illegal, disgraceful, blatant pillage during which innocent people and honest servicemen die... well.. he did us all a favour.

Law is an argument, it is in a state of constant flux. If you oppose the opposition, you're basically in line with Hitler and Stalin, telling everyone to STFU. That's not constitutional.

And BTW i served as a cadet in the RAF, a fact which makes me almost 12% more qualified to talk about this than a civvy. I would have enlisted, but my eyes are bad so they wouldn't let me fly the sexy planes, and i realised just in time that i would be asked to do immoral things by whatever government came along and decided to have a war...
unlike Watada I realised this before signing.

welcome arsenault185

Ehren Watada refuses to de deployed to Iraq

MINK says...

jesus, you think i am a gulf war explosion denier?

of course there is a war, it's fucking undeclared and illegal and disgusting, people are dying for bullshit. "Britain has declared war on Germany" i can understand. "You're either with us or your with the terrorists" sounds like a kind of neverending loosely defined excuse for halliburton to make profits off the blood of brave soldiers.

"Al-Quaeda and insurgents" ... jesus.. you swallowed that one whole didn't you. I guess "CIA assets and desperately deluded poor people" doesn't sound so good, huh?

MIT geek nearly shot by airport police for wearing 9V & LEDs (Geek Talk Post)

MINK says...

or you could just remember they shot a brazilian guy in london for the reason that he came out of the same BLOCK OF FLATS as a suspected terrorist, had slightly dark skin, and decided to get on a subway train.

this shit is serious. the "security" guys have a very very difficult job and have to make very very serious decisions. the fact that they do shit like this shows they are completely paranoid, and the fact that london and madrid were bombed anyway shows that this "security" isn't even effective.

Heck i tried to take PEANUT BUTTER on a plane and they treated it like semtex and confiscated it. I mean really, Al Quaeda must be in awe of our mighty powers of protection. They'll probably concede defeat any time now.

Christopher Hitchens on Iraq

MINK says...

i might be a stupid hippy, but I can't help thinking that if we spent the same amount of money building powerlines, water pipes and schools, and didn't take sides, things would calm down quicker.

the power of giving a good example instead of shooting people should not be underestimated, and saying "there would be chaos" is not really much of an argument in the current climate.

Hitchens says "Al Quaeda" a bit much.

Billy Vegas - The Militarization of Our Police

Fox News correspondant gets waterboarded

ookook says...

"If this is the worst that a terrorist gets, they get the 4-star treatment compared to what other countries would do."

First of all, these are not "terrorists". They are suspects. You've heard of innocent until proven guilty, right? One of the fine principles of American government?

Many of the detainees at Guantanamo were arrested on little or no evidence -- the accusation of a neighbor with a grudge was enough. About 200 Guantanamo prisoners have been released without charges. That's at least 200 completely innocent people we've tortured. There's still 500 more at Guantanamo, plus god only knows how many others hidden away in the other secret prisons.

Even setting that aside, this isn't "the worst" they get. I don't know why waterboarding gets so much attention; at various times they've also acknowledged using temperature extremes, sleep deprivation, and "stress positions" (forcing the victim to stay in a painful position for a long period of time). Not to mention the dog attacks, beatings, rapes and murders at Abu Ghraib. (If you're of short memory: "The American public needs to understand we're talking about rape and murder here. We're not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience." That was Senator Lindsey Graham. A Republican, before you ask.) All of those are torture, as far as I'm concerned. Or at the very least, cruel and unusual punishment. Which used to be illegal. Another fine principle of American government down the drain.

And about that "compared to what other countries would do" part... you've heard of "extraordinary rendition," right? We're shipping prisoners to those other countries to be tortured. Does it make it any less torture if we pay someone else to do it for us?

And even if you're enough of a monster to stomach all that, torture still doesn't work. Just as the reporter in this clip says -- "I was ready to submit, tell them anything." People will say anything to make the torture stop. Whether it's true or not. The information we get from these guys is absolutely valueless. Not a single terrorist plot has been foiled by this vile nonsense. Instead, we're creating terrorists, stirring up anti-American hatred and giving them a real reason for that hatred. Al Quaeda probably views all this as the best thing that could possibly happen for them -- what better recruiting tool for terrorist groups? What better way for America to live up to the "Great Satan" moniker?

Those perpetrating this are evil men. Those who support it are fools. Waterboarding is unamerican. We're supposed to be better than this. Wumpus, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
