Why It's Almost Impossible to Run a Two-Hour Marathon

oritteropo says...

You mean apart from the explanation that the speed required to run a marathon is close to a flat-out sprint for most people, and that the maximum speed that you can sustain over two hours depends on the three factors that they explained in the video? It was discussed around 2:10 in the vid.

The handful of people have physiology that gives them unusually high oxygen uptake, lactate thresholds, and running efficiency.

It's slightly clickbaity because Nike... and despite serious cheating their attempt on the sub-2 hour marathon to sell shoes failed by 26 seconds.

p.s. The Grauniad had an article on what the rest of us can learn from these elite runners https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/may/06/secrets-two-hour-marathon-men-alter-running

At no point in the video was there an explanation that came close to answering why it is almost impossible to run a two hour marathon. Or why only a handful of people could ever come close to it.

In fact, a lot of parts seem like they were created in a rush. At one point he says that mid 60s is "nowhere near" 70 or 80. When the average is 40? Is the scale logarithmic? If so it wasn't mentioned.

I'm very grateful for the information i did learn in the video, it was a nice little bit of info about running and runners. But it fell far short of investigating the 2 hour mile or answering the questions it posed. I wish videosift will not become a home for clickbait.

Why do your shoelaces come untied?

ant says...

Yeah, I have had the shoes tied hard with big knots too. Maybe you should tie my shoes. I think the problem is that I like to cross my feet and laces get pulled and stuff beside walking like in this video.

hamsteralliance said:

I think it's just getting the knot really tight, to where you'd need to poke a pointed tool into the knot to undo it. Which is just a lot of hand tightening and then flexing it with your foot and the tongue of the shoe to really lock it in place. At least I've had success with just doing that with all my shoes over the years. Also, I don't like wearing tight shoes.

What's your secret to keeping them tied forever? Mine always come off. I can't tie shoes due to my disabilities.

I'm a fan of tying my shoelaces once and then never untying them. I just slip my foot in and out of the shoe. The laces never come apart.

Mother 'livid' over son's treatment by TSA at DFW Airport

ChaosEngine says...

Ok, let me start by saying I have a pretty low opinion of the whole "security theatre" at airports, etc.

That said, I've always thought that "pat-downs" are friggin' pointless unless you're going to do the whole body.

I've had the occasional search myself while travelling and it's almost always completely perfunctory. If I was actually carrying a weapon or some mythical "dangerous liquid", I could easily have stashed it in my crotch or my shoes.

Basically, either you actually do a body search (including genital area), or just admit the whole thing is fucking bullshit and let us on our way.

Jon Stewart Calls Out The Media Regarding Trump

poolcleaner says...

Nothing is ever simple. I'm just not properly explaining what I was saying -- Jon Stewart went off and did his public speaking, crowd organizing thing with this belief in something that he couldn't quite define. He lost his mojo, in a way, saw that he was naked, bereft of his staff. Any talking/figure head with a staff of writers or information feeders can be comparable to other leaders of a similar make up. Trump and Stewart are reality tv stars of a similar make up.

Dag suggested that the writers of the Daily Show are what created Jon Stewart as we know hom, and so I ran with the idea that he, like the figurehead and reality star, Donald Trump, are products of other people's opinions -- this, when left to their own devices, while successful entertainers, they realize the emperor's clothes are transparent and now they have to rely on their own smaller slice of knowledge. Not that Stewart is dumb, but Stewart without writers and correspondents, is a similar archetype to Trump. Stewart's writers and correspondents, including the man whose show he is on in this clip, are akin to the media that Donald Trump treats like his writing staff. But instead of leaving the Daily Show, Trump is leaving *most* of the media, revealing he is not as knowledgeable without his sources.

Anyway, I was following the logic as laid down by dag's logic for why Jon isn't as funny or put together. I also know that good leaders put themselves in other people's shoes before giving advice to other leaders. Stewart MUST do this because he is a decent figurehead, but Trump doesn't -- that's why the media questions him on what biographies he is reading; leaders are supposed to put themselves into their rivals AND heros shoes as a matter of critical self analysis -- so, Stewart is speaking to the media almost as if he is also putting himself in Trump's shoes and speaking about how his own writing staff and correspondent's left him and succeeded.

Stewart has a 4 year contract with HBO. He will have the structure and writing teams he needs. Trump should utilize the media, including books and newspapers, and follow the subtext Jon laid out here.

Edited for spelling, grammatical errs and additional context. Done editing.

Ending Free Speech-Elizabeth Warren Silenced In Senate

worm says...

Oh, I'm glad you cleared that up. I had completely forgotten liberals don't use violent imagery, like calling pretty much everyone they disagree with some form of Hitler... or a nazi if Hitler gets old.

In any case, my point is still the same. Use "the shoe is on the other foot" or "turn-about is fair play" or even "what comes around goes around" if it makes you FEEEEEEEEL better.

Whine on! I'm loving it!

I love how nazis use violent imagery and talk up the brutality all the time, but when they get punched in the face it's less boots on necks and more piss in pants.

Honestly, richard spencer helped dispel the illusion that these new nazis are anything to worry about when he bitched out after tasting some of the violence he enables. Reminds me of the Big Lebowski.

Wait for it...

transmorpher says...

I was basing it on his overall attention demanding outfit(the real fur(sigh), the camo, the red shoes), the breed of cat and the stand out carrier which also aims to show of his uncommon kitty breed, and also that cats usually aren't fond of traveling like dogs are, so people don't tend to take their cats with them like you would with a dog. And the cats ears are pointing downwards which means it's scared, so it's probably not one of the rare cats with an outgoing personality.

Oh wait, maybe I've got it all wrong. Could this indeed be some kind of "grab-proof" carrier, suitable for the current political climate?

eric3579 said:

Why would you assume this is a fashion statement? I didn't even consider something that crazy. Of course i always assume people LOVE their pets. Seems like a cat carrier to me. Much better than the cat carrier i use to use. Especially if your mode of transport is on foot. Do you always assume the worst in all situations where animals are involved?

I guess its possible you are somewhat joking but from your past comments i assume you are serious.
