The Amazon isn't "Burning" - It's Being Burned

diego says...

good video but a rather important thing he missed is, that many governments DO pay brasil to maintain the rainforest-

"Norway has followed Germany in suspending donations to the Brazilian government’s Amazon Fund after a surge in deforestation in the South American rainforest. The move has triggered a caustic attack from the country’s rightwing president.

Bolsonaro rejects 'Captain Chainsaw' label as data shows deforestation 'exploded'

Jair Bolsonaro, whose move to meddle in the environmental organisation’s governance led to Norway’s decision, reacted by suggesting that Europe was not in a position to lecture his administration.

“Isn’t Norway that country that kills whales up there in the north pole?”, the Brazilian president said. “Take that money and help Angela Merkel reforest Germany.”

After weeks of tense negotiations with Norway and Germany, the Bolsonaro government unilaterally closed the Amazon Fund’s steering committee on Thursday. The fund has been central to international efforts to curb deforestation although its impact is contested.

Brazil’s environment minister, Ricardo Salles, said the Amazon Fund had been suspended while its rules were under discussion.

In response, Ola Elvestuen, his Norwegian counterpart, said an expected payment of about $33.27m (£27.36m) would not take place as Brazil had, in effect, broken the terms of its deal. Norway has been the fund’s biggest donor, and has given about $1.2bn (£985m) over the past decade.

“He cannot do that without Norway and Germany’s agreement,” Elvestuen said. “What Brazil has shown is that it no longer wants to stop deforestation.”

This week Berlin had said it would withhold an expected payment of about $39m. Norway and Germany questioned an initial proposal from the Brazilian government for the fund’s steering committee to be reduced in size, and had warned against any weakening of the structures of the fund.

Grave concerns about the rate of deforestation since Bolsonaro took power have been repeatedly voiced by the Norwegian government and others.

According to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, the government agency that monitors deforestation, the rate increased by 278% in the year to July, resulting in the destruction of about 870 square miles."

while I do agree that for 3rd world ex colonies it is extremely tiresome to hear lectures about ecology from the US and Europe, who tore up the planet to achieve their status and continue to consume far more than 3rd world people do, Bolsonaro is dead wrong here and sadly it has to be said this is what the democracy and capitalism produce: shortsighted win-now, defer the costs decisions.

Achtung - Words of the World

ulysses1904 says...

I find this stuff very interesting, will be visiting that site. Something I noticed about native Spanish speakers is that when they speak English they put a slight "eh" sound at the beginning of English words that start with "st" or "sp", as no Spanish words start with those consonants. So they pronounce the word "Spanish" as "ehSpanish". Which leads to Ricky Ricardo over-correcting and trying to perfect his accent by removing the "e" sound where it actually belongs, like "(ex)splaining" and "(e)xactly".

Motorist Intentionally Runs Over Dozens of Cyclists

Sagemind says...

Brazilian police have been questioning a man accused of driving his car at high speed through a crowd of cyclists, injuring at least 12 of them.

Video of the incident in the southern city of Porto Alegre shows bikes and riders flying through the air as other cyclists scream in panic.

The driver said he accelerated because cyclists were banging on his car and he feared he would be attacked.

The cyclists were holding a regular event to promote the use of bikes.

The incident happened on Friday evening but came to national prominence in Brazil on Monday when television networks began broadcasting amateur footage that had been posted on the internet.

No-one was killed and the injured have all been released from hospital.

The driver, Ricardo Neis, 47, fled the scene of the incident but was brought in for questioning after his abandoned car was found.

Police said he could face a charge of attempted homicide.

Cyclists in the demonstration said no riders had threatened the motorist.

The riders were part of a movement known as Critical Mass, which holds mass bike rides in cities around the world to demand more respect for cyclists and is sometimes accused of deliberately blocking traffic.

David Mitchell on The Wealth of Footballers

Deano says...

>> ^Quboid:

I like the line "who apparently are both billionaires and brain-dead". It bugs me that footballers are labelled thick, as if you have to be thick to get paid well over £1,000,000 a year. I know Mitchell has no interest in football, but he's a bright guy and I'm pretty sure he meant this sardonically. He's got to know better, even if much of the general population falls for this cliché.
Of course some footballers are thick, but on the whole, I'd guess top footballers are on average more intelligent than most.
The reason they aren't hated is because they're not responsible for wreaking the economy.

I can only speak from my knowledge of English football but most footballers aren't especially bright. To earn large amounts of money in the game you have to be good at football and many are, apart from Charlie Adam. Most skipped further education and signed on with professional clubs at a young age or flitted around until they failed to make the grade.
Regardless, their working class backgrounds probably meant there wasn't much of a history of outstanding educational achievement. As soon as the talent is evident the desire to balance sporting and academic achievement evaporates.

I have no idea why you'd think that "top" footballers would be more intelligent on average. Than whom? The entire population? I'd guess their football intelligence is better.

Even the foreigners are capable of acting like twits. Apparently Bendtner's got off today on vandalising cars with Lee Catermole, Meanwhile Ricardo Fuller was sent off over the weekend for violent conduct (again) which his manager labelled "stupid" and my favourite player Balotelli indulged in a series of pretty dumb stunts all season long. They all earn incredible amounts of money and don't act in a way that is consistent or respectful of the rather sweet lifestyles they've landed.

Yes it's always silly to generalise but as a group they don't veer towards smart cookie territory. For example I give you David Beckham, the popular Joey Barton and possibly the most inept in the brain department Wayne Rooney.

Ellen 1, One Millions Moms 0

Fletch says...

"...leveraging her sexual politics to promote a historically traditional brand. Each mention of the name she gets 100k, or something like that."

Oh, god...

She defends herself against bigots and, yes, bullies, so she's somehow participating in "sexual politics"? JCP hired HER, and she certainly doesn't control the ignorant ramblings and activities of One Million Moms.

"Historically traditional brand"? WTF does that even mean? Do you mean "before there were gays"? Or do you think JCPenney sheets and pans and clothes and waffle irons were originally meant to represent some sort of imagined conservative lifestyle? Or maybe you just mean "old", which doesn't mean shit.

We stand squarely behind Ellen as our spokesperson and that’s a great thing, because she shares the same values that we do in our company. “Our company was founded 110 years ago on The Golden Rule, which is about treating people fair and square, just like you would like to be treated yourself. And we think Ellen represents the values of our company and the values that we share.” - Ron Johnson, JCPenney CEO

Who knows if she shops there? Does she have to? Maybe someone shops there for her. She used to work there in the 70s, but that probably isn't enough for you. What if she just moves into one of the bedroom displays? They could put up plexiglass so none of the 40,000 One Million Moms could spit on her. Do you think Troy Aikman and Hulk Hogan actually rent shit from Rent-A-Center? Or that Jared Fogle doesn't have a BigMac once in a while? Or that Ricardo Montalbán actually enjoyed the soft Corinthian leather of his very own Cordoba?

I'm sure there are many, much more important things you can spend your time being ignorant about.

I would probably not go out on that particular limb...

Great stuff. Looking forward to the next one. I think they need a young Ricardo Montalbán to play Kahn. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Enrique Iglesias.

Leslie Nielsen meets with world leaders

ulysses1904 says...

Classic movie. Some of my favorite moments are:

Drebin using the men's room with his mic on
The guy throwing a pillow in his face in the hospital room
Sneaking into Ricardo Montalban's office then climbling out on the ledge
O.J. Simpson getting shot and then staggering around the room bumping into everything
Drebin singing the national anthem then playing the umpire
and the list goes on.

The first sequel Smell of Fear was pretty lame but the last one 33-1/3 was definitely an improvement.

Dems: "Over 10" threatened with violence re: Health Care

NordlichReiter says...

No in the dark ages I think they just went straight to killing people. And Liberal meant something other than what Liberal means today.

But then again, arguing with both sides on this is ridiculous. The criminals will out, and I hope they are caught before they make stupid mistakes.

Education would go a long way with these types, they fall right into the rabid fox news watching stereotypes that are created for them.

Here's the roll call.

Here is how Wikipedia describes Classical Liberalism, and Modern Liberalism.

Classical Liberalism:

Classical liberalism is a political ideology that developed in the 19th century in England, Western Europe, and the Americas. It is committed to the ideal of limited government and liberty of individuals including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and free markets.[1] Notable individuals who have contributed to classical liberalism include Jean-Baptiste Say, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo. There was a revival of interest in classical liberalism in the 20th century led by Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman and other economists.[2] [3][4]

Modern Liberalism:

Modern American liberalism is a form of social liberalism developed from progressive ideals such as Thomas Paine's asset-based egalitarianism, Theodore Roosevelt's New Nationalism, Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom, and Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal.[1] It combines social liberalism and social progressivism with support for a welfare state and a mixed economy. American liberal causes include voting rights for Black Southerners, freedom of choice for women, and government entitlements such as education and health care. Keynesian economic theory plays an influential role in the economic philosophy of American liberals.[2] These policy stances adhere to the central premise that individual freedom can only exist when it is protected by a strong, democratically elected government that has an active role in society and the economy.[3][4]

Lucy was a goddess... Sexy, talented, obviously smart, and man oh man, was she ever funny! Ricky Ricardo was the perfect foil for Lucy McGillicuddy- their chemistry was the best I've ever seen on the screen. I know that their marriage was unhappy, especially in the later years, I know about the allegations of abuse, I know about their children and the difficulties that they had. I know about all of those things, but the above video is how I choose to remember them- obviously in love, happy, funny, charming, talented.

Thanks for the memories, Lucy and Desi.
