Food Delivery Apps: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

newtboy says...

I worked for a company called “waiters on wheels” in the Bay Area…essentially door dash before cell phones and the internet. We used handheld radios.
We got minimum wage + tips, and our salaries didn’t pay for gas and car upkeep so we survived or perished based on tipping. It’s hard, thankless work only to be at the whim of your customers mood for your livelihood.
Worse, you pay taxes as if you are tipped 15% on all orders, but the average tip was closer to 8% when you count non-tippers.
Back then, stoners were the worst. Usually paying at least partially in change, rarely a tip at all, maybe an offer of a bong hit for a tip at best.

If you hire a service to deliver, remember there’s an actual person between you and them, and you only hurt the person by not tipping, not the company. If the order is screwed up, it’s unlikely to be their fault, they can only take what the restaurant gives them. Keep that in mind, service people deserve to be paid for their work, and the tip is part of their pay.

Hey, if you have a personality like mine you can get your picture on a restaurant wall really easily.

Well, at least behind the counter, with a 'do not serve' label. It's pretty much the same thing.

MTG makes Biden For President Ad

But…but….Hunter had consensual sex with adults and Illuminati lizard person Hillary ran a child rape and cannibalism club out of an invisible 5th dimensional pizza restaurant basement that can only be seen using black magic, so none of that matters and Dems are definitely the bad guys that rape kids.

Awwww…poor little snowflake, @bobknight33. You don’t like your daily reminder that you are part of a hypocritical dishonest terrorist organization? Poor little boy, here, since you misplaced it, I’ll provide it again.

You don’t like it pointed out that your fellow seditious terrorists now actually admit their hypocritical plans, like suspending the constitution or just line item vetoing it by the president? I suppose Biden should remove the second amendment before Trump goes after the 14th by presidential decree.

You don’t seem to like being reminded of the unChristian anti family actions of your Christian family values sweethearts Boebert and Manly Traitor Greene, both getting divorced, both cheaters, both child abusers, both consistently putting their temporary happiness above their families to the point of dissolution of their families, and both still act like they know what’s good for YOUR family.

You don’t like being reminded of how MAGA politics has destroyed Texas politics, with infighting destroying all trust in government there, raising crime rates, taxes, and prices but gaining nothing but fewer services, less reliable utilities, and a total lack of an education system.

You don’t like when I point out they admit their “investigations” are all frauds with no evidence whatsoever and only disgraced paid political actors as “witnesses” and even they don’t show up to testify?

You don’t like knowing the MAGA paid actor that Trump used to accuse Biden of raping her in the open public halls of congress in 93, Tara Reade, has defected to Russia under the wing of a Russian spy convicted of spying on MAGA and trying (nearly succeeding) in sleeping her way into the whitehouse by sleeping with multiple MAGA politicians. (Pretty funny for it to be the top rated new comment AND erased)

You don’t like being reminded that Trump admitted on camera that he stole and retained (unsecured) highly classified documents that he admitted were still highly classified in Summer ‘21, long after he had any power to declassify anything…and I don’t mean the ridiculous claim that he can declassify state nuclear secrets by secretly thinking about it.

Every time you erase your daily reminder of your party’s daily crimes you let me know it’s getting to you…that you know it’s correct (or you would just claim it wasn’t like you have for years). Eventually it might even register in your brain that everything you learned from MAGA is pure fantasy, every accusation from MAGA an admission, every denial an admission, and the only loyalty is to their wallets.
I guess I’ll just have to post them here for you…so they don’t get “lost”. 😂

PS- Trump’s idiot lawyers shit the bed again. Last year they got together at a restaurant to discuss their problems with one of their own, Boris Epstein, who they discussed publicly as someone who was a filter between them and Trump, and that he was a liar who lied to them and Trump and obstructed them from complying with court orders….and at the next table was a reporter from the Guardian who has now published an article about this meeting. This doesn’t help Trump’s legal team work together….something they’ve been incapable of so far, and something Trump needs desperately! 😂

PPS- Roger Stone recordings came out today explaining how easy it is to manipulate Trump, just tell him he did something he never actually did/said, tell him people loved it when he did/said that, and he’ll just go out and do/say it “again”, even if he never did/said it before. He said he’s been doing that for 30 years, and it never fails. Putin/Xi/Un knows that too. 🤦‍♂️

For posterity when bob erases it again…

Trump- “I was allowed to steal all those classified documents and I can show them to whoever I want.”
Parlitore- “I quit. Jack Smith should look at Trump’s lawyer Epstein because he obstructed our search at Bedminster for more classified documents.”

Are you out there picketing your local Cracker Barrel?
You know you’re supposed to be, right?

The right has decided to cancel their favorite restaurant chain….because it had the audacity to add impossible sausage to their choices, and offering vegetarian options the right opposes won’t be tolerated.
Yes, this is a real thing, “conservatives” cancelling their favorite chain because it “went woke” by offering a new menu item. Next they’ll be complaining how leftists cancelled their favorite restaurant. That’s who the right is now. Thanks Trump.

Spelling Bee Contestant Asks The Definition of “Woman”

First, It’s 1.6% - 5% (and rising fast), not .5% bob.
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/06/07/about-5-of-young-adults-in-the-u-s-say-their-gender-is-different-from-their-sex-assigned-at-birth/

Also, 100% - .5% = 99.5%, bob. Or are you pretending only 1% balks at this idea? Considering your math skills, it’s impossible to know.

If so, why should the 99% capitulate to the 1% of intolerant assholes that insist everyone must eat pizza?

If ther are 100 people going out to eat together daily and 5 are deathly allergic to cheese, are you going to insist you prefer pizza so they should be excluded from the population because you don’t feel like a burger right now so everyone MUST eat pizza, even though the restaurant serves both?

No one is trying to make you eat the burger, they only want you to admit burgers are on the menu and that everyone has the right to choose their own meal, you don’t get to choose for them, nor do you get to deny there’s more than one choice nor enforce that insane denial.

Trans people self determining their gender in no way forces you to do the same thing. Such a dumb argument, Bob. It’s the old Con. argument…“You having a choice infringes on my rights to force my choices on you.”.

bobknight33 said:

The real question is why is 98.5% of Americans capitulation
to he the desires of the 0.5% .

Surely if there are 100 people going out to eat and 99 pick pizza and 1 picks hamburger, why do you need to cave and get 100 hamburgers ?

Oh sweet zombie Jebus….Boebert was a hooker in Colorado and had multiple abortions. Her weak denials are less believable than Cawthorn’s, and the evidence is her “sugar daddy meets.com” page with provocative photos of her looking for “pay to play” dates, and an unreported $70000 “donation” from Ted Cruise after her sugar daddy introduced them and she visited Ted in Texas (when she was still an “unlicensed escort”).

The investigators that made this public have BEGGED her to sue them so they can depose her under oath about these charges. She’s toast.

This on top of the revelation recently that her mileage fraud, where she was reimbursed for her claim that she drove almost 40000 miles in a few months campaigning in Colorado, was perpetrated because she was bankrupt and needed $20000 to save her family restaurant (she hadn’t been paying taxes and the state was going to foreclose on her), almost exactly the amount she was overpaid for her fake travel expenses. Now under investigation.

And let’s not forget she was with her husband when he exposed his penis to two 15 year old girls in a bowling alley and defended him over it, making her complicit in child sex abuse.

This is the Trumpist heroine, his “best people”. Oof.

At 1:45, there's a restaurant on the left called "Sear's Fine Food". It's still there (in fact, I ate there a couple of weeks ago). It was built before WW2. There was a waiter who worked there until he was 109. Lotta history in that place.

P.I. and Ex-Cop schools cops regarding the law

Drachen_Jager says...

He is being a bit of a dick to them, but Cops should be held to at least the standard of a middling-quality restaurant staff.

Cops are the ones who need to show respect. They don't like getting shot? Guess what? If you act politely and take each relationship as it comes rather than starting with an adversarial approach you don't anger people and it's that combination of anger and helplessness that leads to many cops getting shot.

So, Cops need retraining badly. If someone swears a blue streak at them it should be, "Yes sir. You have a good day too, sir. You're under arrest sir, please step this way and give me your hands so I can put these shiny bracelets on you."

If Cops REALLY were concerned about the dangers of the job they'd act like it instead of turning every single interaction with the public into a conflict that could end in a life or death situation.

TX law & tattoos

newtboy says...

Texas still has "blue laws" restricting the sale of not just alcohol but other non necessities on Sundays. Enacted in 1961 and largely repealed in the 80's, you still cannot buy liquor at a store on Sundays, and car dealerships must close one weekend day. This was their way of forcing the Southern Baptist religious beliefs of the ruling class on everyone.

Edit: I grew up there in the 70’s when you could only buy food or medicine on Sundays, and some groceries and pharmacies closed.

Texas has a LONG history of legislating religious "morality", from it's inception through today. They love to talk about their freedoms, but you really only have the freedom to follow their narrow definition of morality. These morality laws always effect the poor far more than the wealthy, often completely exempting the well off....for example, you can buy an expensive mixed drink to go from a bar, restaurant, or hotel...they even have drive through bars...on Sunday morning in Texas, but you cannot buy a cheap bottle in a liquor store to pour your own. This is typical.

Let me explain the stupidity.
Right wingers want to reopen all businesses especially resturaunts, virus or not, asap
Low wage businesses like restaurants can't reopen because low wage workers aren't returning. Thousands of immigrants that 4 years ago would have been granted refugee status would LOVE to serve you for minimum wage or less and pay taxes, but work visas and refugee status have all but disappeared under Trump and Biden hasn't fixed that yet.

The right's position as I understand it, get us back to work fast, but for fucks sake don't give visas to brown skinned low wage workers to get it done. True story!!

Side note- The southern border states were once Mexico, so we are the alien invaders here, not Mexicans.

Covid Deaths Trump Vs Biden

newtboy says...

I'm regurgitating the numbers Dr Birx used, and comparing our outbreak to other nations that took it seriously like S Korea and New Zealand. If we had used the same serious action S Korea had, our death rate per 100000 would be an astonishing 1/60th of what our death rates were in the first 6 months or so. Just universal mask wearing would have cut our deaths by an estimated >1/4, 130000 fewer deaths, and slowed the rate of new cases significantly, but Trump fought against them.

Here's the link on that data...., granted slightly dated.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/10/23/how-many-coronavirus-deaths-are-truly-attributable-trump/

Remember, the Whitehouse said 100000-240000 possible deaths, around the same time Trump said deaths would never rise over 20000, using the lower of those numbers and blaming Trump's policies for the excess we are >80% his fault now, using Trump's promised numbers over 96% are blood on his hands.

There's also the fact that after knowing about the uncontrolled epidemic in WuHan Trump let over 40000 people (just not Chinese nationals) back in the country from that region with no tests available and no quarantine except for those obviously extremely sick. An immediate and actual travel lockdown could have made our deaths zero, and definitely would have made them exponentially lower.

Then there's the dismantling of the Global Health Security and Biodefense unit he closed that likely could have identified the outbreak in China much earlier and again, made our numbers zero. It's exactly what they were created to avoid.

I honestly feel 80- 90% was being generous, in fact there's a real possibility that a thoughtful adult president would have made any number of intelligent decisions, any one of which could have avoided the pandemic altogether or minimized infections enormously, even minimizing the Chinese epidemic.

I do agree, Biden is doing much better at taking it seriously and acting like rapid vaccination is important, but still isn't doing enough. I would prefer an enforced national mask mandate, mandatory social distancing, school closings until vaccination saturation, etc until we have herd immunity....not half assed measures like 50% capacity at bars and restaurants, with few business shutdowns and zero enforcement, pretending it's over every time infection rates dip.

Mordhaus said:

I don't disagree that Trump could have handled many aspects of the pandemic better, but I think your numbers are a bit off.

One, because with the lack of a vaccine, experts are unsure of how many of the deaths can be laid specifically at Trump's feet. In other words, they are unable to put a solid number to how many would have died had he done anything different. It certainly would not be 80-90%, that is a nearly unproveable claim in the face of no vaccine being available. The closest estimate is from the Lancet Commision, which suggests that 40% could be Trump's fault, along with four decades of "long-standing flaws in US economic, health, and social policy" that compounded inefficiencies in the country's public-health systems before the pandemic. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)32545-9/fulltext

If you look at statistics, Biden's administration was running at similar death numbers than Trump's for a couple of months after he took office. They only began to decline rapidly since the vaccine became more available. Vaccine availability is more of a factor of how fast the companies were able to make the vaccine, versus anything Biden could have done. His contribution, if you will, is primarily not stockpiling a reserve and sending it out as fast as possible. The current death rate is running about the same as from May 2020 to November 2020. The winter surge was about as bad as everyone expected.

Here is a link that shows the deaths on a timeline. Select "deaths' instead of "cases". https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/04/01/coronavirus-covid-live-updates-us/
