Rebuilding an Engine a Little Bit at a Time

1/3 scale V12 liquid cooled model - perfect for P51 Mustang

oritteropo says...

It's only the prototype, they're looking to make the next version lighter, higher revving, more powerful.

The spitfire used a 2 speed blower that the pilot switched in flight, but the equivalent Messerschmitt had a more sophisticated variable one (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimler-Benz_DB_605 for details).

I don't know what the Mustang had, but I'd assume they've copied it here.

Um...needs a two stage supercharger then.
From the bore and stroke I'm not sure how they get away with calling this 1/3 scale. More like 1/5. Even then, the displacement is a fraction of the type of 12 cylinder engine they're replicating because of that whole πr^2 thing.
Nitpicking. I suppose the point is that it's cool.
Still not 1/3 scale.

How not to scam someone for insurance money

I find your username funny now =).

Some guy backed into, (more like "touched") my classic Mustang in a parking lot. It wasn't in all that great of shape (pre-restoration) at the time, but I spent the rest of the afternoon going through videotape from different stores. Figured out who it was, got a sweet shot of him hitting it in one camera, getting out and looking, then driving off. Another camera got his plate number. Spent months making sure he got screwed over by insurance and police..
Accidents happen. Act honourably, and I'll likely forgive you out of laziness if anything. Act dishonourably and I'll fuck up your whole life.

Someone accidentally bumped our flower bucket at the end of our drive. Left a handwritten note on our door with their phone number and an offer of restitution. We didn't bother with it since it's just a cheap bucket but it was a very sweet thing. I almost like it better a little bit crushed.

Last year someone scraped the tailgate on my truck (much better shape than the Mustang, btw). Way more damage, monetarily. They left their contact info and a fairly heartfelt apology. I was about to have the whole truck painted (colour change) so I just tossed the note.

Intense new video of the Reno Air Show crash

Nevada Air Show Crash 9/16/2011

deathcow says...

I think something becomes snuff when you see the people and then they are dead. Knowing an event produced death (the stage collapse etc) isn't enough to disqualify imho.

They are still trying to figure out what happened in this case. Photos show a trim tab falling off the plane moments earlier, while still in the air. The plane was heavily, heavily modified from a stock P51 mustang. The wings were dramatically shortened.

sme4r says...

Wellllllp,

The airplane is a p-51 Mustang from the WW2 era, apparently equipped with multiple modern recording devices. While mid-flight a piece from the tail end of the aircraft (edit: the piece is the elevator trim tab) broke off, affecting the planes ability to maneuver effectively, causing catastrophic failure and the pilot lost all control on a turn. The plane then pitched up and took a sharp turn downwards as it nose dives into a luxury box-seat area killing dozens and wounding 70 or so.

While the tragedy in this story is obvious, the physics are not. Notice the lack of explosion upon impact or shortly there after. Usually there is a massive fireball that proceeds a crash like this and it has baffled scientists and engineers alike.

In reply to this comment by Shepppard:
I would REALLY like some backstory on this.

What was going on? Was it a race, or an air show? what the hell was the pilot doing in the first place, the angle of that descent means he either did the most boneheaded loop ever, or something went catastrophically wrong.

I'm not even happy having watched this. It's not exactly snuff, because we don't explicitly see anybody die (I mean, obviously the pilot, but we only see an after explosion) but even still, I'm uncomfortable watching it. However, just because I'm uncomfortable watching it, doesn't automatically make it snuff.

ehh.. one way or the other, I see controversy brewing with this video.

Reflecting on Growing Older Says Guy With '70 Dodge Charger

bareboards2 says...

My 58 year old bro just bought a 2012 yellow mustang. He said all the young guys come and admire it in the parking lot. He also says it is rated to get 25 mpg -- although it only gets that when his wife drives it.

I can tell by your forehead that you drive FORD cars.

Used to have a 93 mustang. Till a soccer mom in an SUV pulled out in front of me and I nailed her. Airbag went off and instead of the plastic splitting for deployment the whole thing was ripped off. The force of the bag going off imprinted SRS and a little Mustang emblem from the plastic in to my forearm. To this day if I get a little sun or tan it shows up really bright.

P51 Mustang and A-1 Skyraider midair collision at Duxford

Shepppard says...

I just died a little on the inside.

@GeeSussFreeK

Why did they collide though? Was it pilot error, or was it faulty equipment.

If it's faulty equipment it could result in the same thing happening in other Airshows involving either Skyraiders or P-51 Mustangs. Personally, I'd prefer this not happen at the airshow I'm going to in two weeks, and would rather an investigation be conducted to ensure that I don't have a P-51 crash land in the crowd.

Naming Your Child | David Mitchell's Soapbox

oritteropo says...

Well it's lucky that, like David Mitchell says, a name is just a label and everyone will get used to it. My kids know a girl named "Mustang", which surely would be worse

You're right that sid-knee would be correct.

The masters of spelling a name one way and pronouncing it another are our cousins across the English channel from you. Have you heard of an English TV show called "Keeping up appearances"? The main character is named Hyacinth Bucket, but insists it's pronounced "Bouquet".
>> ^DerHasisttot:

>> I'm not good at transcribing into phonetic language, I admit it :-)

The first syllable sounds like the french "Zut" as in "Zut alors!", the second syllable sounds like the word "neigh". As opposed to a (hopefully) correct pronunciation "Sid-knee".

In my defense:

A) I didn't know you were a female until now
B) I don't think racism is off limits if done without hatred (same as sexist comedy)

Nobody knows where you come from, and you can no sooner change somebody else's sensibilities than they can change yours. We all see the world through a different lens, and I think what blankfist meant to say—but lacked the time between bong loads—is that he doesn't feel the same way you do about stuff. He is ok with it, and you should become ok with it. If you ever think this place is too insensitive, hang around youtube for a day or two, then you'll remember the difference between intolerance and observation.

PS: As a white male raised in a middle class family, I should know a thing or two about what it's like to be oppressed. I wanted the red '99 mustang for high school graduation, but daddy wouldn't shell out the extra dough for the Cobra edition, so I totally know your pain.
