Neil deGrasse Tyson explains meaning of life to 6 year old
Believe it or not, I think I was already wondering about those type of topics at that age (as I had always been a HUGE space and science fan, I knew by age "3" essentially that I wanted to be an Astronaut; which I'm sure my parents got a kick out of).
However, here is the problem with asking that/those type of questions (as I believe many people have more than likely been down this road). The community and the adults around you shape parts of your reality AND how you decide to continue to ask or answer that question(s). In my case, the problem was: religion. The answer to ALL my questions back then were: religion...
It wasn't until I was around 16 that I became highly suspicious and then began to bring up ALL of these questions I had "thought" WERE answered...but, they weren't at all. Finally by the age of 18 (into 19) I had shaken off the chains of religion that had held me down and to this day I have to wonder what would have become of me, what COULD have become of me, if I had an educated answer to my questions and not merely the answer that is given by those that don't know (a.k.a., I hate to say it, but it IS true: the stupid or ignorant people).
Religion DID, however, give me answers to some things I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. But, in the long run I must admit that--while a small amount of good came from it--it truly didn't out-weigh the tremendous amount of damage that had been done to me (as I bet others can attest to this being true for them as well). I was forced to go backwards through my entire life and then question myself on everything I believed and stood for, including "facts" and other such things that science uses as foundational elements--but, religion uses belief in the same manner as "facts" (as we were taught in some cases to say that we "knew" or "know" that something is true, rather than using "believe", "thought", or had "faith"...pretty shady right?!). This took a very long time, years on end, to finally "un-clutter" my mind.
Now I'm left wondering how well I would have done without all that nonsense pored into my mind DAILY (as I attended seminar...).
So I appreciate Neil's answer here in many ways. He is telling this kid to explore the world around him and to some degree, don't obey everything you are told (so long as it isn't dangerous). He is absolutely right. I merely wish I had people that told me the same things. As I didn't get "this idea" until FAR later in life (since my mind becomes "infatuated" with questions and ideas, getting the religious answer to my questions prompted me to literally think of everything possible within the religion to make things work "logically", and I was very much "zealot" like...because as I said, these questions consume me, so I cannot help but BE a "zealot")...
But, eventually I had a Physics class and that re-opened everything. I started to ask those questions again and NOW I found a new answer to what I had previously been told. The huge difference this time was: facts and proof; and also that it is all derived from logic. Physics was essentially undeniable. You could not refute it, because this was how we made things work around the world--via engineering--the math within it is used to control, make, and imagine anything you wish to engineer (or if you wish to do an experiment). I already had major issues with religion, but I was making logical "excuses" to make it work. But, with this huge influx of knowledge everything changed (how I wish we would have had Physics in Junior High; why do we not...don't we want engineers?).
I hate to add religion into this topic, but I thought it good to point out that this kid may be heavily influenced by Neil. This conversation that Neil directs towards him may end up being one of the most important events in his life. Just as mine was when I asked certain questions, I received religious based answers...practically deciding the path I would take...at least while I was a child/kid. But, had I been a slightly more stupid or just ignorant person, then I would still, right now, believe fully in religion.
So, when a child asks you ANY question like this do not joke around about it--while it is cute, you must remember that YOU are shaping their future and their destiny...

Hockey Fights now available pre-game! Full-teams included!
As pointed out this has nothing to do with the NHL. And it's also not the North American Hockey League which is a separate league in its own right. This is the Ligue Nord-americain de Hockey, a Quebec semi pro league manned to a large degree by retired enforcers from the NHL and guys who never made it that far. To play in the league you have to be born in Quebec or played junior hockey there. And yes the marketing of this league is probably aimed at the UFC/WWE/WCW crowd.
"I once went to a fight and a hockey game broke out"
Seriously, the NHL could stop this if they really wanted to (fines, suspensions, etc) but they know the public actually wants to see a fight.
Between Two Ferns: Brad Pitt also Louis CK Stops By
Since we are sharing stories of our use of illegal drug paraphernalia, here's one of mine. When I was in high school ( all these stories should start with a variation of this opening), my friends and I took a cardboard shipping tube about 4 inches in diameter and 4 or 5 feet long and made a bong out of it. It took three good pulls to get the smoke up to our lungs . All that lung work followed by a great big bong hit was VERY effective. We named it the BONGZOOKA. It was a big hit (pun intended). We kept that thing around our whole junior year. I too grew up and quit smoking the weed, ...but.. I miss the 70s and the bongzooka.
When I was in high school I smoked out of a 6-foot bong at a party. There's no way I had the lung capacity to clear it, but I tried my best and sucked maybe half of it down. The next thing I knew, I was waking up lying back in a chair and things were missing from my pockets.
(For the record, I actually haven't smoked the weed since high school.)
Nicolas Prost sends Nick Heidfeld into a violent crash
When I saw this live I was reminded of some of Alain Prost's tactics from when he raced in Formula 1 back in the 80s and 90s. Good to see he's passing on his talents to his son but he really should've taught junior to keep the helmet on after doing something stupid!
Susie Wolff makes F1 history at the British Grand Prix
The problem is that Williams don't own the rights to the footage, so can't include it in their video.
Women generally have the advantage of being a bit smaller and lighter, and as there are a lot more young women coming up through the junior formulas, I expect it's only a matter of time before we get one racing in F1.
Susie is pretty good, and I wish her all the best, but I doubt it will be her.
Kinda disappointing we didn't actually see her drive. I know motorsport is physically demanding, but you would still imagine that a woman should be able to compete on an equal footing in an actual race.
Good luck to her, hope she actually gets a racing seat at some point.
Baby reveal gone wrong!
The negative emotional response wouldn't have happened if dad had the brains to inform junior just how many interesting -but not related- females are going to be orbiting his home in about 10 years.
Man Escapes 5 Yr Sentence After Dash Cam Footage Clears Him
Well entr0py, actions like these earn them douche-points with all their like-minded kinfolk in the douchebag fraternity, and hopefully seals their fate when sentenced for more egregious violations when they finally show supreme ass and get sent upstate where they may even be lucky enough to meet some 'reforming' felon they helped put-away....where there is no camera, and no-one to tattle on a good deed for all of humanity...
Sarah Wallace needs a Junior Anti-G-Man Badge!
Here ya go sister!!
✋✊✋
And to address jubuttib's comment....That should be the job of EVERY citizen who travels the U.S. or (insert police-state here) roadways, to have on-board-streaming, real-time "upload to cloud" systems to thwart the actions of any and all police who chose the lower path.
FUCK the criminals, as they have been handed the power through voter complacency to fuck the citizenry!
Agree with your sentiments 100% eric, btw.
That was bizarre, why would the police officers involved even do that? I get that they're shouting things like "get away from my gun", imagining the camera can't see what's going on or there's only audio. But why bother framing some poor harmless guy? How does that help them?
Oppressed Majority
Every male I was around in gradeschool, junior-high, and highschool acted like this. It shaped a very embarrassing portion of my self that was only erased when I reached college and realized it wasn't how people should be if we want everyone to live the life of freedom that we hope to.
I was going to say how no one I know ever went so far as to rape a person, but even that's not true considering the unchaperoned "party" my friend and I had at his house with two girls, where which I left at sunset for dinner because "my parents would get mad at me", and I later learned that the two girls and he got drunk on his parents liquor after I left, and one of them later pressed charges that he'd raped her that night.
I don't say this lightly, it's something I remembered just now, and is clearly a memory I have fought to push out of my mind. It's not a fear of guilt, I bear that very much, as much as it's the first of many encounters a really naive young man had with how terrible sexuality can be between the established genders in our society. I believe this happened when we were in the 6th grade.
I'm very thankful today that I am as pro-equality as I am, and that I never committed any mistakes nearly so heinous as that. That said, I understand the film is a compilation of all the worst-case-scenarios in a woman's day to day life, and you should view it understanding that, but where I come from, and understanding how there are such extremely concentrated pockets of ignorant society along these lines, know that there are very many people out there who act this way.
I got out; passed the "small-town-test", but knowing the adults I knew when I was growing up, and that nearly none of my schoolmates from that era ever moved from home or had any higher education, I know that those who stayed there continue to act that way 20+ years on, so in the end this video is not inaccurate.
I don't meet dudes who act like any of this. I must hang out in educated circles of civil people. WHo is this made for?
Boy Stands up at City Council on Bullying
My fix if I were an adult on the school system would be to perhaps sponsor a support group-type action-awareness campaign to empower the bullied kids through a kind of humiliation campaign against the most egregious of offenders and perpetrators.

Kung Fu instruction from a 'real' kung fu master for a solid year to lay down the foundation for defense as well...Maybe some Krav Maga?? Teach em the cockpuncher defense and have a team of girls protect the smaller, less-confident boys??
I'd get real creative..
Humiliate the alpha in the herd and they tend to slink the fuck off and take their friends with em...
I dealt with douchebags by confusing the shit out of them-In the 10th grade I made great friends with the junior-varsity cheerleaders in my remedial math class, and sat at the cheerleader table at lunch, pissed some jocks off for a while until I started telling them what their GF's were talking about them....then the started coming to me for advice...Helps when you can get them weed as well
Graham Bell skis Sochi downhill with handheld camera
Wow! I could never get down a slope like that without an ambulance or air lift. I had to look up the impressive fellow with the skills to make it down in one piece and film.
"Graham Bell and his brother Martin competed for Britain throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Graham took a Silver Medal at the World Junior Ski Championships in 1984 and represented Great Britain at five Winter Olympics in Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994 and Nagano 1998." /sauce

Cops using unexpected level of force to arrest girl
@artician- You are correct in your observations the reason being....currently a recent victim of two HPD officers willing to perjure themselves before a jury in order to satisfy their egos and their state mandate to fill beds in their jails (or prison, had we decided not to take a plea down to keep them from sealing our fate).
Felony obstruction for mouthing-off in the back of a cop car to a couple of complete douchebags who could not stand that we would not let them treat us like some kid a couple of jocks would have bullied in junior high.
The official statement was alleged that their lives had been threatened which when in fact we surmised in colorful detail their mommy and daddy issues, their obvious history of abuse and or neglect, questioning their sexuality and manhood simultaneously, all while we voluntarily accompanied them into said car in cuffs from a girl's apartment after we gave them the benefit of the doubt and rendered I.D. to them and TOLD them we had a warrant for an unpaid traffic ticket.
Was in the home of a friend when her ADT system (installed a day earlier) sent a false alarm-They had tried to call her but she was passed-out with an I.V. in her arm (vitamin treatment) bed-ridden with a torn ligament. Cops came to the door, was just waking-up and (stupidly) let them in and addressed their incivility when they after determining that the alarm call was false, began to ask me what my "problem" was-Asked them why they had to act like a couple of uncivil douchebags in someone's home and asked politely if the one cop, would remove his dark sunglasses and that they were making me nervous.
This is Texas BTW, land of the most redneck fucks to be found anywhere in the planet of police.
Meet an an idiot who poked the rabid dogs with a stick and found soon that we had over-stepped our "freedom of speech."
Yeah, fucking pissed and for good reason. It's called a felony what they did, and with full-participation of the D.A. and the judge.
Ten years ago this would not have happened. we know because we have spoken our mind to arresting cunts before, as well as spoken like a gentleman to those treating us with the same consideration who represented the local constabulary.
All cops are or will be felons during the course for their tenure as a "peace officer', in the United States.
Now we must jump though many, many hoops to fulfill probation obligations, pay money we don't have, and if I make it through, will be able to have the case sealed, so that we might work again in this state without having a felony (never before) on our permanent record.
So this is Canada?? Your time is coming as well, just look at the show-out when the damn G-20 came to Canada a few years back.
They're gearing-up for chaos folks-
(collective object-pronoun used to avoid incrimination) If you are interested, we'll tell you why in a P.M. It's kind of hard not to be incensed while being kicked while prone.
Been bullied by cunts just like this on the sift before and those petty cowards are afraid to even show their asses here any longer.
America Has A Secret Super Weapon
I'm not sure about the American education system, but here in Canada the dumbing down of it is appalling to me. It's been getting dumbed down in the name of being 'open minded' and other nonesense by people that don't understand basic reading, writing and arithmetic are not subjective studies and can't be taught in a everyone can do it how they feel manner. Our curriculum is being designed around 2+2=5 isn't 'wrong' it's just that a student applied a different method and should still get partial marks. Our schools are also implementing 'no-fail' policies that basically do away with the 'social stigma' attached to failing and insisting that all students pass each grade unless parents agree, teachers and all staff agree. It's no wonder our western standards are falling, as we are exploiting every last inch of the luxury we have to do so.
.
That said, I do believe comparisons of students here to those in places like say China are misleading. Shanghai may top the global charts on student results, but I question how complete those statistical methods are. China is very focused, and understands you don't need or even want EVERYONE to be an expert in politics, economics and astrophysics. As a result most people aren't going to go beyond our equivalent of middle years or maybe junior high before entering the workforce. The students that remain in school will be the best and brightest. If you then take ONLY students enrolled in high school from a place like that and compare it to the west, your numbers will of course badly favor the countries limiting student enrollment.
As I noted above, it's no reason for complacency. I'm spending hours and hours each week compensating and supplementing the education my kids aren't getting because of systematically flawed education system
