David Cross on the Tea Baggers

GenjiKilpatrick says...

@quantumushroom

Let me show you something neat. = D

~~~
1. The Left Right dominates the news media in America; and around the world, leftwing rightwing media are almost the only news media.
2. The media report most news in the light of their Leftwing Rightwing values (whether consciously or not).
3. Most people understandably believe what they read, watch or listen to.
4. This is a major reason most people on the Left Right are on the Left Right. They have been given a lifetime of leftist Rightist perceptions of the world (especially when one includes higher education) and therefore regard what they believe about the world as reality rather than as a leftwing Rightwing perception of reality.
~~~

Now, I know it's difficult but ask yourself for a second..
"What if that tables were flipped, QM old boy?! What might this come to imply?! By god. I must solve this case!"..

OH. Btw, here's this very interesting set of facts you'll logically judge as completely irrelevant. = P

The Tea Party History for Dummies

Throbbin says...

It is a commentary on his lack of experience...

Sure Winstonfield, sure.

In the last 18 months these RADICALS...

Have you ever considered that you are the radical (or reactionary)? Is it possible that paranoid gubmint hating god fearing folks are the nutjobs? Any objective view Obama suggests he is still very much right of center, even if it doesn't fit into your worldview. It takes a certain kind of true-believer to suggest Obama is nearing communist territory - and a healthy disregard for political scaling or measurement. Ask anyone who isn't a partisan or teabagger. Better yet, ask anyone from a different country. They'll tell you. Hyperbole is so much more fun though, right?

doubling down on leftist economics, europe in shambles, right-wing economics to the rescue

Even Britain's Conservatives are wild-eyed radicals in your mind. Federal money for kid's hospices? Communist!!!

Please...
Lousy polling?

45.7% after a months-long oil spill....this man is clearly hated by the country and 'Real Americans'TM are clearly lined up against him.

I guess in your mind the following numbers are proof positive of a complete outrage on behalf of 'Real Americans'TM? Or does this suggest that maybe Americans enjoy government intervention?

http://www.gallup.com/poll/140981/Verdict-Healthcare-Reform-Bill-Divided.aspx

And what's this? Majority of Americans support the creation of a public option? Heresy!

http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/archives/185853.asp

I can't tell if you really believe all this, or just like to fuck with people. I don't know which scenario I dislike more.
>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:

gotta love the understated racism (man-child)
Incorrect. It is a commentary on his lack of experience, his spoiled & selfish behavior, and his general lack of any ability to actually deal with opposing ideas with any degree of maturity. But false accusations of racism when faced with opposition is a tradition on the left - as we've seen all too often lately.
the hyperbole (radicals)
In the last 18 months these radicals have implemented a plan to ration health care, quadrupled the national debt, established huge unconstitutional increases in federal power over finance and other industries - all against the will of the people. Bailouts, industry takeovers, tax increases, cap & tax, amnesty, health care reform, and on and on and on - all things solidly opposed by a 2/3 majority of the people (or higher). This administration and congress is the most left-wing, radical, out of step clot of extremists that this nation has ever seen in positions of power. The only people that 'like' what they're doing is the 25-30% or so of the country that occupies the far left. Conservatives, Repubicans, and Independents are roundly rejecting everything these radicals are doing - and they make up 65-70% of America.
the blanket portrayals of Europeans as poverty-stricken communists
While Obama & the other radicals are doubling down with leftist economics - Europe is doing the opposite. Greece, Italy, Spain, Britain, Germany - day after day the stories pile up about how they are turning to 'privitization' in order to save themselves from fiscal disasters. It isn't that they're poverty-stricken communists. It is that they have followed the misguided principles of leftist economics, and now they turning to capitalism to pull themselves out of the hole... All while the Man-Child is doing the opposite and putting American further in debt in a time of economic turmoil & trouble. Says something, don't it?
And the rhetorical attacks on Obama (how's his polling these days?
Pretty lousy - actually...

Isn't there majority support for Health Care reform? Isn't there still majority support for a Public Option?
In NeoLib-Lala-Land maybe, but not on planet Earth. The only thing there is 'majority support' for is for repealing the bill.

Folks on the left need to learn a lesson quickly. YOU ARE THE FRINGE. The left likes to walk around thinking they are mainstream and popular. You aren't. Leftist policy and philosophy is radical and unpopular. And when you try to ram it down people's throats it makes you even more radical and unpopular. Leftism isn't compassion. It is cruel. Leftism doesn't lead to prosperity or tolerance. It leads to poverty and balkanization.

Workers of the World Relax

fissionchips says...

>> ^bcglorf:

Working less and consuming less is an option open to most people in capitalist countries. The people choose instead to work more and consume more.
There are really only 2 situations were people seem to reduce their consumption, in a recession or when they are made to do so by force. Neither has ever been improvement.

"Neither has ever been improvement" you say? Since the recent recession, gallup polls show Americans to be healthier and happier. Also, there are examples of high paid workers who have been forced to reduce their work week. Most oppose such measures at first, yet when offered the chance to return to their original work week, few take the increase in pay and hours.

Atheist Nations Are More Peaceful

Lodurr says...

Thanks for the data Rasch. In the Gallup poll, I wouldn't go so far as to call the 45% of "not entirely certain" all religious, but neither should they all be considered atheists. The Eurobarometer poll painted a slightly different picture. While you can say that some people believing in "church" were actually atheists, there must have been people saying "not entirely certain" who still attended church services or prayed or held religious or superstitious beliefs.

I think the video is still comparing apples and oranges because an "atheist" is commonly seen as a secularist or a naturalist, while the broader sense of the definition has no such connotation. As I said, if a religious label can include both Richard Dawkins and ancestor worshippers, it's not a very meaningful label.

Atheist Nations Are More Peaceful

Lodurr says...

The Religion in Norway wiki also says "In 2005, a survey conducted by Gallup International in sixty-five countries indicated that Norway was the least religious country in Western Europe, with 29% counting themselves as believing in a church or deity, 26% as being atheists, and 45% not being entirely certain." Still a far cry from being majority atheist.

Bill Moyers: Restoring Accountability for Washington's Wars

Nithern says...

Only 2% of the population of the USA, has served in Afghanistan. If Mr. Moyers is correct, the current price of Afghanistan is $65 billion. And each additional, 1000 troops, costs us $1 billion more. The sad thing is, Iraq costed $3 trillion over six years (that's $500 billion/year), and well known it had NOTHING to do with 9/11, Al-Quadia, or Ossama.

So, the concept of a 'draft' is easy for someone like Mr. Moyers. He won't be drafted, and so has no fear of it. I myself, would not be drafted. But I'm not a supporter of it. While Mr. Moyer and myself could be liberal thinkers, we do differ on one subject. A draft would simply allow the military more lambs to the slaughter (i.e. Vietnam), rather then tone down or eliminate our presence in that country. Ultimately, we as Americans should seriously ask what we have to gain, by staying in Afhganistan.

Quantumushroom,

1) I seem to recall those responsible for 9/11, were from Afghanistan, and NOT, Iraq. Yet, we plunge a HUGE investment in to Iraq and not more then a few dimes towards the fight in Afghanistan. Bush took his eye off the ball to pursue a vendette with Saddam. So, as such, we should have focus our attention on Afghanistan, and did the job right. But, we can't ask republicans to do their job correctly. If they did, Mr. McCain would be President McCain. Oh, and Palin would be CP (shudder). Its an unusual world we live in.

2) The contract, Mr. Moyer refers to, is how we Americans treat our own citizenry. The current social injustice, is how health care companies, worry more about their bonuses and paychecks, then the citizens of the country. That one would think, they keep costs low, to increase the profit margin. Yet, when they can't, they raise prices and premiunms. However, as we've seen, the contuining trend of the health care companies, just raising premiums by 18% (number reported by gallup.com), to help pay for their out of control paychecks and bonuses. Oppoents of Mr. Obama (like you), condend that the Health Care bill, will costs to much, @ $1 trillion, and hope us liberals, are just as dumb as you are. Yes, as I've stated above, we liberals know ALL about the cost of Iraq, and how 'useful' it was on the 'War on Terror'. So, Quantum, buddy, pal, could you point out where all those nuclear weapons of mass destruction, we were suppose to have found in Iraq?

3) Fox News isn't bias. To be bias in journalism, one has to be creditible first. Fox New, blew all its credibility during the Bush/Cheney Administration. All us liberals get to sit back and listen to conservatives look like idiots for fun

4)I already pointed out my thoughts on the Draft, above.

5) Yeah, $3 Trillion for a war that had no WMD, did not restore the country to viability (I'm sure Iraq will have a civil war sooner or later), and it WAS, for the oil. Yes, if Mr. Bush had been accountable with tax payer money, we wouldn't have the HUGE deficit we have now. He thought, by giving three seperate 'tax breaks', that would applease people. He just didn't tell anyone that he increased our debt to a size, LARGER, then any President before him. In fact, the last four presidents to have entered and left, the White House, except one, increased the US deficit by an alarming rate. That one guy, was Mr. Clinton....a Democrat. Now, we have another Democrat, that will have to figure a way to reduce the deficit, in time, for a republican to spend like crazy.

Trailer for 'Creation' Movie

Sagemind says...

Turns out people in the US won't see this movie...

"Good God, what is this country coming to?

It seems the film Creation, a major-production biopic about Charles Darwin starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, won't be seen in the United States because no distributor with the guts to stand up to the religious right in this country can be found:
The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere on Sunday. More..It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia.
However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.
Movieguide.org, an influential site which reviews films from a Christian perspective, described Darwin as the father of eugenics and denounced him as "a racist, a bigot and an 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder". His "half-baked theory" directly influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and genetic engineering", the site stated.
The film has sparked fierce debate on US Christian websites, with a typical comment dismissing evolution as "a silly theory with a serious lack of evidence to support it despite over a century of trying".
Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning producer of Creation, said he was astonished that such attitudes exist 150 years after On The Origin of Species was published.
"That's what we're up against. In 2009. It's amazing," he said.
"The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it's because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the US has picked it up.
"It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days. It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules.
"Charles Darwin is, I suppose, the hero of the film. But we tried to make the film in a very even-handed way. Darwin wasn't saying 'kill all religion', he never said such a thing, but he is a totem for people."
No wonder conservatives believe liberals lack the courage of their convictions. We prove them right every other day"

Real Time: New Rules - August 7th 2009

Also found some more on my own, here's the Gallup poll apparently: http://www.gallup.com/poll/3742/new-poll-gauges-americans-general-knowledge-levels.aspx

One interesting part:

In the new poll, about four out of five Americans (79%) correctly respond that the earth revolves around the sun, while 18% say it is the other way around. These results are comparable to those found in Germany when a similar question was asked there in 1996; in response to that poll, 74% of Germans gave the correct answer, while 16% thought the sun revolved around the earth, and 10% said they didn't know. When the question was asked in Great Britain that same year, 67% answered correctly, 19% answered incorrectly, and 14% didn't know.

Seems once again I just expect way too much of humanity. Guess the good news is I can go back to thinking Americans are just more or less as stupid as everyone else.

I gotta say, I would love some fact checking on this.
I admit I don't know a whole lot about America outside of what I get on the TV and internet, which admittedly is a lot, but some of these numbers sound absolutely absurd. 18% think the sun revolves around the earth according to a gallup poll? What were the particulars of that poll I wonder.
That's almost one fifth of the population. If I thought at any time that one in five people I passed in the street thought the sun revolved around the earth, no matter what country I was in, I would get the fuck out so fast I'd leave skid-marks.
Maybe I just have too much faith in humanity in general, but frankly, to me, that number doesn't sound frightening as much as it sounds like bullshit. If it is true however, it would finally explain why some people are afraid of America. And I'd probably have to join them.

From http://www.pollingreport.com/ on Iraq:

"Do you think Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon?"

March 2008: Yes (28%) No (58%) Unsure (14%)
April 2003: Yes (53%) No (34%) Unsure (13%)

That's the only issue Bill mentioned I could find on this site. He said 34% still believe Hussein was involved, which is quite off from 28%, especially given that it was well over 50% in 2003 (the year the war iraq war started) and dropped steadily to 28% by 2008.

I would guess that Bill's numbers aren't way off, but they're somewhat exaggerated.

The number of people who identify themselves as "Conservative" has dropped over the last 10 years. The GOP has spent much of that time ousting moderates from office.

"People do not trust Obama"

Published 5 days ago
http://www.gallup.com/poll/116359/Satisfaction-Improves-Slightly-Steadily.aspx
From the article: "Gallup has measured national satisfaction daily since Barack Obama took office, and also did so in late October through December 2008. In the latter part of 2008, satisfaction ratings ranged from a low of 9% in Dec. 12-14 polling to a high of just 14% in the first few days after the election and after Thanksgiving.

Little seemed to change when Obama first took office -- in Jan. 21-23 polling, 14% of Americans said they were satisfied. After showing a brief improvement in late January, the percentage who reported being satisfied with the state of the nation settled back to 14% by early February. But since that time, satisfaction has shown a slight but steady improvement, and has been 20% or higher each of the last seven days."

Nothing says "America doesn't trust you!" like steadily climbing approval ratings eh??????

And also, don't blame a bad economy on a guy who's been in office for less than two months. It's just...you're a jackass.
