The Man Clearing Tons of Trash From Mumbai’s Beaches

nanrod says...

Most of the trash in the oceans comes from rivers. I read once that 90% of the plastic in the oceans comes from just 13 countries. This shocked me enough to look into it. The consensus seems to be that 80 to 95%(depending on your source) of all the trash in the oceans flows into the oceans from just 10 rivers, being all the major rivers of China, southeast Asia, plus the Nile and the Niger in Africa. However, that's trash in the oceans. This volume of garbage on the beach probably comes from locals using the beach as a dumping ground.

where does all this crap come from? the local community or does it was ashore?

my other question is how many dead bodies have they found?

New Rule: Distinction Deniers

bareboards2 says...

I was struck by the decidedly male and extremely loud whooping and cheering as Bill talked.

Spoke volumes, that did.

I am willing to bet $100 that some of those whoopers have been and continue to be creepy with women.

Thank you @ChaosEngine. Per usual, you are a lovely calming flow of reason and understanding in a turbulent time. You sound like a human being. Just... a human being.

I love that in a person.

I'm guessing it's because over time the oysters will fill up those nooks and crannies between the rocks that are absorbing the energy. Eventually this may turn the complicated maze of directions the water can flow into something that performs more like the stepped gradient.

David Mitchell makes a Feng Shui expert squirm

Jinx says...

To be fair, it wasn't just David. Almost everybody got a shot in and those that didn't looked somewhat bewildered by it all.

Oh well, I've not heard of any feng shui experts claiming that rearranging your living room can cure cancer, so I'm going to put in the "mostly harmless bullshit" column. Also there is something to be said for really good interior design, so maybe that's how he started off before he realised he could charge a different type of client more for the same thing if he said some shit about energy flows.

How one tweet can ruin your life - Jon Ronson

bcglorf says...

The point
Your head

And I don't believe for a moment that you really are missing the point.

The victim in the video made a tweet that sounds racist, but was meant in a sarcastic manner to be making fun of the stupid things racists say.

Your own comment you've made before is the same thing, saying profiting of racism is AOK, in a sarcastic way to be making fun of the stupid things racists do:
Once you learn to profit from racism then BS like this doesn't bother you. In fact you begin to appreciate all the hard free labor that keeps the dividends flowing

You weren't really advocating for enjoying the free labor and profits of racism, you were making fun of it. The victim you are so quick to run a bus over and see ruined made the same joke as you did, but you still fail to see any irony or double standard in this.

And 1 sentence to refute your off-topic rant. Apparently newtboy and I differ from you in believing the historic racism and prejudices were BAD and should be ended rather than recycled against a new range of victims.

So you are implying profiting off racism and racists is racist. That is an interesting opinion.
In america there is a well documented history of what happens to any black person caught demeaning whites in any minor way.

How one tweet can ruin your life - Jon Ronson

bcglorf says...

That's some cold hearted malice right there.

You start pointing out that the victim described "only lost their job", and then you go on with this little link providing the suggestion that she really was guilty of holding to a hate filled ideology.

All this based on a single tweet in which she was actually making fun of those people holding to hate filled ideologies.

Kind of like when you posted:
"Once you learn to profit from racism then BS like this doesn't bother you. In fact you begin to appreciate all the hard free labor that keeps the dividends flowing."

Imagine if you lost your job because a million folks on the internet all took that as straight faced support for profitting off racism and not the obvious jab at it that it is.

Aikido - Hiromi Matsuoka

transmorpher says...

Fighting on the street isn't even comparable to MMA. Not to take away from the hardness of any MMA fighter, but MMA is a sport. There are rules, and it's a safe environment (as safe as can be considering what happens in the octagon). You don't have to worry about the other guy poking your eye out or biting you, you probably won't die, etc.

The best thing for self defense is to be able to identify a dangerous situation, and get away from it using any means necessary, before it escalates. Getting into your car and driving away is the best thing you can do.

The other part of it is not looking like a victim, it's a body language thing.

And in these cases, Aikido is as good as any other martial art.

Having said that I'd still love to see someone use Aikido in an MMA match just for entertainment, because the only videos I've ever seen are ones like this, where the partner is going with the flow to avoid injury.

Actually now that I think about it, are you allowed to dislocate/break joints in MMA? Because the damage is likely to be permanent.

Drachen_Jager said:

Yeah, @ChaosEngine that's true, but it still doesn't work in real life.

Nobody uses Akido in MMA.

The Way We Get Power Is About to Change Forever

newtboy says...

Ok....they start with a few mistaken premises.
Most importantly, the premise that energy is best stored in a chemical battery. It sounds good, but it's simply wrong. The best way to store large amounts of energy is in a hydro/gravity storage system. This is a two basin system, with two basins at different heights with a pump/generator linking them. When you have excess power, you pump water uphill. When you need more power, you let it flow back down. It's ecologically friendly, cheap, and effectively never wears out like batteries all do, it can work on any scale, and unlike most hydro doesn't impact a living river system. It's proven technology that's head and shoulders above battery banks.

Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet, yeah

Damn, I wish I owned that 2250s collection. All I got is a 1950s collection. :=(
