Fixperts - A Button Fastener for 82 year old Tom

transmorpher says...

What you've quoted is that's the same thing I said in my OP -JH acknowledges that changing diets helps. They specifically say meat and milk are the prime allergy suspects.

There isn't any disagreement here :-)

But..........I do have a bone to pick with Hopkins. The fish oil study they reference on the Hopkins site, is a bit sus when you dig deeper.
Everyone in the study was also given disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs along with the fish oil..... so Hopkins isn't really giving us the full story here, which is: Fish oil helps remission in people on RA drugs.

Great, now RA sufferers have to buy toxic liver destroying drugs, and also buckets of fish oil supplements too(the doses were 10x the daily recommended amount of fish oil).... I guess they're line of reasoning is that you make more money if you can sell them two pills for the same disease.

They even try to hide the drugs part by calling it "DMARDs" after the references (which people don't usually read). Technically it's not lying I suppose, but it's very unethical. If I didn't go all the way through and find the research it'd have never figured that out. Turns out John Hopkins is largely industry funded, which doesn't surprise me now that they're approach is to push more pills, instead of less.

Sincerely, I have to thank you for bringing that to my attention. I like to keep a list of this misleading stuff.

You weren't wrong when you said there are some scummy misleading people in the medical field.

According to the JH website, it's not only wrong, the study could not show what you claim by it's design.
Excuse me...let me use their exact words....

Food Hypersensitivities and Their Link to RA

In some patients, specific foods have been shown to exacerbate the symptoms of RA.(ref 5) Avoiding these foods or food groups has been shown to have limited, short term benefits but no benefits long term. Even though different forms of dietary modification have reportedly improved symptoms in some patients, people with RA may have spontaneous temporary remissions. Therefore, it is important to perform double-blind, placebo controlled trials to differentiate diet effect from spontaneous remission. You may identify a food that is a particular trigger for you, and this phenomenon is real. However, the science is not able to reliably identify specific triggers for individuals.

Diet elimination therapy is a method of determining food hypersensitivities with patients. Elimination diets avoid a specific food or group of foods such as milk, meat or processed foods that are known to be prime allergy suspects. These foods are eliminated from the diet for a specific period of time. Foods are then gradually reintroduced one at a time, to determine whether any of them causes a reaction.

Panush and colleagues, demonstrated temporary improvement in the signs and symptoms of RA with diet elimination and modification in a controlled study where the symptoms associated with food sensitivities were studied.(ref 5) During this study when the patient was fasting or on a severely restricted diet, the patients symptoms improved significantly. However, when the patient had milk reintroduced into the diet, episodes of pain, swollen and tender joints and stiffness were experienced. Similarly, Kjeldsen-Kragh and colleagues(ref 6) noted that fasting may be effective in reducing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, however most patients relapsed as new foods were reintroduced into the diet. Pain and discomfort frequently returned once a patient reverted to a normal diet. These studies are few in number and should be interpreted and extrapolated to real life only with careful thought and caution.

Obamacare in Trump Country

worm says...

I'm all for free markets and free market solutions. My only problem with that as it applies to the medical industry is emergency and catastrophic situations, where you cannot price-shop and compare hospitals on the way to the emergency room.

In THOSE cases, the only way you can shop free market style, is insurance (or single payer I suppose, if you believe in Government products).

I still say if you want to get medical insurance costs down then the number one priority should be to find a way to make suing the medical industry for EVERYTHING not so profitable. I honestly don't know the solution to this, but it MUST be figured out and solved. As long as every patient walking through the door is a potential multi-million dollar lawsuit liability, medical costs are just going to keep climbing.

Figure that out, and allow the insurance industry to offer Catastrophic-only insurance policies. People really should be paying for their own doctor visits for the little things. The only way to make the free markets work is by knowing what you are paying for...

Clinton, Stein, and Trump supporters smoke weed together

poolcleaner says...

What a liar, dude. He lit, dragged, and succinctly pulled to clear that bong quite well for someone who supposedly doesn't know how it works. He even lit to the side to avoid torching the bowl...

I have introduced a lot of noobs to bongs and they usually look mildly retarded and awkward even after finally figuring it out. He didn't vote for Trump and he knows how to smoke that bong.

Yes, wasn't sure how to correct that but have since figured it out. I'll get to it as soon as I get back home. Thanks!

No one seemed to notice that the foot rests moved. In the display, they are in front, but in the one he sits on, they are in the 'rear', so you don't have to remove your pants completely.
Also, why do they not give Butters credit? He figured this out years ago.

The New iPhone is Just Worse

shagen454 says...

Same here, I don't think I will buy an iPhone ever again after the 5s I have. I usually hook it up to my PC, and I swear that iTunes for PC is so shitty that it has literally messed up/bugged out the iOS, so that it's always restarting on it's own. I took it into be repaired, they couldn't figure it out and recommended that I buy a new iPhone... typical. It still works, but it's a pain in the ass.

Trippy the comment has been removed. That's really weird. It was actually longer but i edited down to this one sentence. Must have been done by siftbot, but no clue why and ive never seen it done before. Very odd.

Also i asked lucky to double check siftbots auto spammer as i cant figure out for the life of me why siftbot spammered him.

Im highly skeptical of auto siftbots ability to figure shit out.

SUICIDE SQUAD - Official 'Harley Quinn' Trailer (2016)

Drachen_Jager says...

Yet another movie ruined by bad direction.

Is it really so hard to get help from action directors/choreographers who actually know what they're doing? This has been going on for 20 years in Hollywood. Some movies figure it out and manage clean, comprehensible action (ie The Matrix) while others do this garbage close-up after close-up fast-cutting fight scenes which look like absolute shit on screen because they're too lazy to do the action the right way.

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a big-budget Hollywood film that I truly enjoyed. All the execs and their hand wringing, "Oh why don't we see the returns we used to?"

Because you make shit movies, that's why.

Unarmed Man Laying On Ground With Hands in Air Shot

MilkmanDan says...

I always have a tendency to think "let's not be hasty" when considering stuff like this. There's always (at least) two sides to every story.

For example, with Philando Castile (man shot in the car):
He *did* have a gun in the car.
His girlfriend said that he told the officer about it and did not do anything threatening at all, but there is/was at least *some* potential that the cops would tell a different story.
The video of the event didn't show how things escalated, so we have to figure it out based on the reports of two potentially biased reports -- the girlfriend/family and the police.

Honestly, that was enough to look quite bad for the police, BUT my "don't be hasty" tendencies were still in play.

And now, we've got this. Like @newtboy has been saying, I just can't fathom the level of incompetence required to make this an "oops" situation. If they were trying to shoot the autistic man and missed and hit Kinsey by mistake ... that's fucked up.

A) If they were trying to "protect" Kinsey, how about listening to him? Did he sound nervous, like he needed protecting? NO. He calmly explained the entire situation, and was obviously NOT afraid of the autistic guy doing him any harm. And this time, they've got a lot of the lead-up on video, so we can actually hear him explain the situation. Any cop (or anyone) with 2 brain cells to rub together would holster their firearm if they listened to his explanation. Maybe they would stay behind cover and let Kinsey either talk the autistic guy into dropping the toy truck in his hand or let him get up and show them clearly that it was not a weapon (since they were responding to a report about someone possibly having a gun), but there's clearly no need to keep the guns aimed on either of them -- and Kinsey told them as much.

B) If they were trying to "protect" him, then why did they cuff him? With 3 sets of cuffs, apparently. After shooting, once they approached and figured out that there was no weapon, any decent human being would jump into action to try to mitigate the fallout of their dumbass mistake. Don't cuff the guy you "accidentally" shot -- call for an ambulance, try to stop the bleeding, etc.

For fucks sake, if that is the story the police are coming up with to explain / defend (hah!) their actions, it is just utterly pathetic. Charge the shooter and the entire police department with something criminal, and throw the law book at every single one of them. My normally strong "let's not be hasty" impulse is looking at this entire mess with a double /facepalm.

Very glad that Mr. Kinsey is expected to fully recover. Maybe the silver lining beyond his survival will be that an event this blatant almost has to force us to acknowledge that there is a serious problem with how our police are operating.

How Scotland Got Trumped

newtboy jokingly says...

Why don't they just close their borders to Trumps? I hear people say they're all rapists, and that he has sex with his children. People are saying that. I heard it somewhere....it's what they're saying....maybe on the internet...I dunno, I just hear things.
Surely Scotland would want to halt all Trump immigration until they can figure out what's going on....right? Just a temporary ban until we can figure them out.
It's not a problem...Trump's love me.

Samantha Bee on Orlando - Again? Again.

kir_mokum says...

no single regulation is going to stop the shootings but a collection of regulations/laws/policies can definitely help and the right collection of regulations/laws/policies could very well stop these shootings. doing nothing or repealing regulations/laws/policies is clearly not working and those policy makers should have been able to figure that out by the time the thought had finished running through their minds.

Mordhaus said:

The point is that no specific regulation is going to stop these shootings, other than to ban firearms altogether. I'm not willing to sacrifice that right.
